Kudos to DAP for quick action against Tee who acted against principles!

Klang municipal councillor Tee Boon Hock, who was alleged to have misused Selangor exco member Ronnie Liu's letterhead and seal to secure contracts worth a total of RM1 million for 20 companies, at least one of which belonged to a 'family member', has been expelled from DAP.

National DAP disciplinary committee chairperson Tan Kok Wai made the announcement today following a meeting of the party's powerful committee with Tee this afternoon.

Also, Tan announced that the party would be writing to the Selangor government to request that he be immediately removed as Klang municipal councillor.

Can MCA guarantee 100% qualified Chinese students to enter public universities?

KOTA BAHARU, July 30 (Bernama) -- MCA's effort to ensure more Chinese students be admitted into public higher learning institutions has paid off, as 92 per cent of top Chinese students in the SPM and STPM examinations this year succeeded in furthering their studies.

Party vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said this showed the struggle by MCA for Chinese students' education had been successful through the close cooperation of all component parties in the Barisan Nasional.

"The number is higher than last year when only 80 per cent of the students found places in the public universities. We have done this quietly compared to the opposition who only made noise but did nothing," she told reporters after the opening of the Kelantan MCA delegates' meeting, here Friday.

The meeting was opened by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek. Also present were party secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha and Youth head Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Dr Ng said some of the top performing students were also successful in getting popular courses.

Dr Ng, who is also Tourism Minister, said with that, the problem which was raised by Chinese students each year had been resolved.

-- BERNAMA

MCA of course happy lah. MCA can 'show off' that it is fighting for Chinese when it actually can't.

Let me ask you, Dr. Ng, 'Can MCA guarantee Chinese who are not top students yet qualified, to enter public universities?' Of course, you are know the answer.

Let me aske you another question, 'Will MCA fight for the entry to public universities to be based solely on meritocracy?' I'll answer this question for you. No, you won't because you are Umno's running dog!

If entry to public universities is truly based on meritocracy, then there is no need for MCA to waste time and effort fighting this annual perrenial problem!

USELESS FOR CHINESE! USEFUL FOR UMNO!

MUSTAPA LIED, NOT TELLING DA TRUTH, BEAT AROUND DA BUSH!!

Former Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah today ticked off Minister of International Trade and Industry Mustapa Mohamed for not telling the truth about the underlying reasons for the unprecedented 81 percent plunge in foreign direct investment (FDI) last year.

On the sidelines of the 2010 Malaysian Student Leaders Summit today, Razaleigh told Malaysiakini that Mustapa was not telling the truth with all his beating around the bush (and) giving flimsy excuses.

Razaleigh was commenting on the minister's explanation that Malaysia attracted very little FDI relative to neighbouring economies because it is on a different level of the development scale and Malaysia is uninterested in attracting investments in low-end sector which are flooding other regional economies.

Calcium supplements may increase the risk of heart attack by 30 percent...

A new review of research on calcium supplements raises concern for those who routinely take them to prevent bone loss. After analyzing data on close to 12,000 adults, researchers found that in people older than 40, the supplements appear to increase the risk of heart attack by as much as 30 percent (the risk is still small) while providing very limited benefit to bone health, HealthDay reports. Unlike calcium from dietary sources, supplements can boost blood levels of calcium, which may hike a person's heart attack risk. The researchers encourage people to get calcium through dairy products, green leafy vegetables, and other dietary sources. "It is not clear whether [calcium supplements] really increase the risk of heart attacks or strokes," said John Cleland, author of an editorial accompanying the report in the British Journal of Medicine, according to HealthDay. But "they do appear to be a waste of time and effort, and we should probably stop using them."

The supposed health benefits of supplements in general face scrutiny. Clinical trials suggest that supplements of single nutrients like vitamins B, C, and E and the mineral selenium do not, as once thought, prevent chronic or age-related diseases including prostate and other kinds of cancer, U.S. News contributor Katherine Hobson wrote last year. In some cases, supplements have proven harmful. Beta carotene in the diet, for example, is associated with a lower risk of lung cancer, but as a supplement, it increased the incidence of the disease among smokers. Under various circumstances, it behaves differently in the body and can cause damage, Hobson wrote.

NEM: Perkasa screaming in a corner, goverment cowering in a corner

CIMB group chief executive officer Nazir Razak said the massive plunge in foreign direct investments last year was partially caused by uncertainties over economic reforms, such as the implementation of the New Economic Model (NEM).

Nazir said that the tweaking the four-decade old NEP was “simpler than we think” thus the government must now be decisive on economic reforms and execute them promptly, without being sidetracked by detractors such as Perkasa, the Malay rights pressure group, screaming in a corner and all these things are happening. Nazir said this period (of uncertainty) must be cut short.

Lawyers debate DPP's alleged affair with Saiful - Malaysia, the Bolehland!!

Some lawyers hold the view the Attorney-General's Chambers' reputation had been badly tarnished by the allegation that one of its prosecutors had been involved in a romantic affair with star witness Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan while others feel that the damage is minor as the DPP's role in the case was limited to just taking down notes during the trial.

Lawyer Baljit Singh Sidhu,
who is also a lecturer, said the alleged affair would certainly have serious repercussion for the AG's Chambers. Baljit said DPP Farah Azlina Latif's role being minor was not the issue as the fact remained that she was part of the prosecution's team and this should not have happened.

NONEBaljit, (right) however, commended the swift action taken by attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail to remove her from Anwar's prosecution team in order to dispel negative perceptions. Another senior lawyer who wished to remain anonymous when asked laughed, saying this can only happen in Malaysia.

Khir throws DAP-gangster sand link: Semuanya 'halal' bila Khir Toyol MB!!!

Selangor opposition leader Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo has claimed that gangsters protecting the bigwigs in the illegal sand mining business in Selangor are involved with DAP.
In a startling allegation, the former menteri besar claimed that the illegal sand miners are protected by gangsters and these gangsters are close to DAP Selangor. Quoting former PKR man Wee Choo Keong, he further blasted, saying, "The gangsters fund the DAP party machinery"
azlanWhen contacted by Malaysiakini, Khir said, "Wee has already said that gangsters have their meetings in the Selangor state secretariat."

Semuanya 'halal' bila Khir Toyol MB!!! said one Malay guy to me when referring to this sand issue in Selangor. Hehe...true or not? Don't know ler....Maybe Khir Toyo is right this time? After all, he is the opposition leader. ;)

Potty training for children/toddlers: Steps, tips, info; Potty training in 3 days?

Am quite pleased with Janson's progress in his response to the urge to wee in the potty.

Last Friday, he was doing quite well for the first time after much cajoling and persuasion. Had to psycho him and so-called talk him into it.

So, for parents out there, if you're thinking how to start to potty train your boy from age two onwards, do the following:
1. Get a potty (duh!).
2. Get him to wear underwear and shorts at home - strictly no diaper! By doing so, he will be more and more conscious of his body, in this case, his penis (Janson calls it his 'birdie').
3. At least, at every hour, coax/cajole him to sit on the potty. Initially, he will resist your effort to put him on the potty. That's ok. Don't try to push too hard. If he's not ready, don't force it on him. Try again another time. ;)
4. If he does wee in the potty, praise him!

There are many tips/ideas/steps that you can find in the Internet on how to potty train. Don't fall for the one that guarantees potty training in X number of days. I guess every parent wishes to potty train the kid fast but we have to be realistic.

Every child is unique. So, there is no 'hard-and-fast' rule to potty train.

DPP FARAH AZLINA BT LATIF: GAMBAR MUKA CUTE AND INNOCENT

AHA...finally, found a 'mugshot' of the DPP alleged to have an 'affair' with Saiful. I am sure many have been curious to know how this lady looks like. If you google search for 'farah site: www.agc.gov.my', you will get a lot of '404 Not Found' or dead links in the Attorney-General’s Chambers website.

Finally, after trying hard enough, I did a google search for 'farah azlina Gred L44' and clicked on the [PDF] link.

Screenshots of the PDF:

So, there you have it, people! The DPP who posseses the following traits: High potential, meticulous, ability to produce quality work, proactive and innovative attitude.
In other words, she's a HIGH PERFORMER! ;)

DPP Farah Azlina Latif dropped for bonking Saiful? Saiful must be loving it!

DPP Farah Azlina Latif has been removed from the prosecution team in Anwar Ibrahim's current sodomy trial, according to Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail.

NONEAccording to a news alert by the Sun, her removal follows allegations made by blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin in an article on July 22, that she has had an intimate relationship with Saiful Bukhari Azlan (left), Anwar's accuser and another report by Berita Harian Online said that Farah Azlina's removal takes effect immediately.

This latest turn of events will likely add some fireworks when the otherwise snail's pace trial resumes on Aug 2.

Contacted by Malaysiakini, defence counsel Sankara Nair said that the decision by the AG's Chambers came as a major shock for the defence team as there were no reasons given for dropping her even though a letter to seek a confirmation or denial over Raja Petra's allegation was sent to the AG's Chambers yesterday.

MORE TO COME

Aku Melayu

Buktinya? Lihat sahaja rumah Khir Toyo. Hartanya puluhan juta. Hasilnya kerana terus menerus memperbodohkan Melayu.

Aku Melayu, apabila melihat betapa bangsatnya penipuan Umno terus aku membenci Umno.

Sedangkan Nabi Muhammad s.a.w pun digelar pengkhianat oleh puak Jahiliyyah Quraisy. Jadi aku akan terus - meneruskan mengatakan Umno pengkhianat Melayu. Buang Umno maka Melayu selamat. Percayalah

Dutch expats launch KL drink driving service

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — Two Dutch expatriates from the auto racing sector have decided to turn their attentions to a more socially responsible endeavour —providing a service to drive city folk home in their own cars after a night out drinking.
For Recardo Bruins, co-founder of Dial A Driver (DAD) and a race car driver for Hyundai Motors, the idea came from observing the success of the service in Seoul where some 30-40 such companies have flourished by providing drivers for hire.

Bruins is influenced by his stay in Seoul. - Picture by Jack Ooi
“When I go out in Seoul, all my friends call a driver,” said Bruins. He added that there was also some personal motivation for starting the service as four years ago, a friend of his was killed on the street after being hit by a drunk driver.
His business partner, Matthijs Hoitink, who has been based in Malaysia for the past seven years and helps organise races around Asia, said that the company wants to be the first in the market and sees demand ramping up as enforcement against drink driving becomes stricter.
He admits however that response has been “a bit quiet” since starting the service in April as awareness was still low. DAD gets about 5-10 customers per week.
The main issue that potential customers may balk at is the cost. DAD charges RM50 for the first 5km and an additional RM5 for the next five kms. Prices are calculated using Google Maps route calculator.
Hoitink says that the charges are not unreasonable as if people were to use a taxi, they would have to pay for two trips — one to the bar and one to go back home. Females too might have reservations over taking a taxi due to safety reasons. There is also the added consideration of being able to go home in the comfort of one’s own car.

To entice people to try the service, DAD is now offering a promotion of RM50 for the first 15km, which Hoitink says encompasses most of KL.
He added that the RM50 charge is only just enough to cover the cost.
Each time a customer calls, a team of two is dispatched to the customer’s location. The customer is then driven home in his or her own car by one of the drivers while his team mate follows in another vehicle. Upon delivering the customer home, the driver then goes back with his teammate. DAD has four teams with another five “on back order.” Customers can request for their regular driver if they call in advance.
Bruins tests the drivers himself and said that they must demonstrate good knowledge of roads and know “safe” routes.
“The drivers must be polite, friendly and know how to deal with situations,’ added Hoitink.
There was a similar service called Road Angels that was launched in KL a few years ago but folded after it failed to gain traction. The two Dutchmen however, appeared undeterred.
“We look at it as a long term business and feel the market will be there and we want to be the first,” said Hoitink adding that DAD is also looking to tap the corporate events market.
Bruins said that people shouldn’t wait for an accident to happen before taking action.
“Try the convenient way of going out without taking a risk,” he said.

Umno keeps ulu people under the shell so it can continue to exploit them

The Selangor government has allocated RM15 million to enhance the delivery of information in the state, to counter 'BN propaganda and biased news coverage' by the print and electronic media through the state-owned media including TVSelangor, the Selangor Kini portal and Selangor Kini newspaper.

The move is intended to provide people in Selangor with information that will enable them to make wise decisions as news reports on the state government have not been balanced. Khalid cited several examples to back his assertion that many in the state are not aware of assistance provided by the state government, for instance, some have said the 20 cu m of free water (a month) is from the federal government. Even worse, it was discovered during during Hulu Selangor by-election, there were people there who didn't know that the state government had changed (in March 2008). Some said (Muhammad) Muhammad Taib is still the menteri besar.

Guan Eng may behave like 'opposition' but Soi Lek is Umno's running dog

Soi Lek says Guan Eng behaving like ‘opposition’

July 25, 2010
KLANG, July 25 — MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek today accused Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng of behaving like he was still in the opposition for initiating the ongoing spat with a federal officer. Dr Chua (picture) mocked Lim’s attitude and how he had chosen to handle the tiff, pointing out that the DAP secretary-general could have used a more civilised channel to voice his grievances against State Development Officer (SDO) Nik Ali Mat Yunus.
“Look at how Lim Guan Eng handled the issue with the SDO. From there, you can generally conclude that he (Lim) himself is not aware of his own role as an administrator,” he told reporters after opening the Selangor MCA convention at Centro here this afternoon.
He said that as the chief minister, Lim had the right and the responsibility to evaluate Nik Ali’s performance and come up with an official verdict through the state government.
“He can evaluate the SDO and make a decision during the state executive council meetings. Through that channel, he can present the state government’s views to the Chief Secretary to the Government,” said Dr Chua.
He added that the chief secretary would have “no choice” but to accept and respect the views of the state government.
“But by forwarding your views out in the open like that, the SDO would be forced into retaliating to defend himself.
“In the end, the issue does not get solved,” he said.
Dr Chua claimed that if the spat, which has now turned into a full-fledged war between the Penang state government and the federal civil service, failed to be settled, it would be the people who would suffer.
“He (Lim) still acts like he is from the opposition party although they are actually the ruling government in Penang,” he said.
The debacle between Lim and Nik Ali began when Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhamad Farid Saad alleged recently that illegal sand excavation was taking place at a plot in Kampung Kenanga, which had been earmarked for a government polytechnic.
Lim had responded to the allegation by saying that the state had not been able to probe the matter as Nik Ali was not co-operative.
He had also accused Nik Ali of refusing to respect the principles of accountability by answering queries on the Penang Botanical Garden, the illegal sand excavation at the Balik Pulau polytechnic and how federal projects were being carried out without approval from the local councils.
The accusation escalated into a verbal war between Nik Ali and Lim with the federal officer retaliating by calling Lim “insolent, uncivilised and a coward” at an Umno function.
Since then, other leaders including DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and even Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan have joined the fray, turning the spat into an all-out battle between the civil service and the DAP.
Mohd Sidek has so far accused Lim of being “excessive” in his remarks and has given his assurance that Nik Ali would not be reprimanded for criticising a chief minister.
Lim then retaliated by accusing Mohd Sidek of preferring to protect “little Napoleans” than defend the integrity and professionalism of the civil service.

Umno no longer as “action” as before - less 'action' but still 'action'

UPDATED @ 08:23:45 PM 24-07-2010
July 24, 2010
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 – Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin declared today that Umno and Barisan Nasional had eaten humble pie and was no longer as “action” as before, amid continuing speculation about snap polls.
In his speech when attending a “Juara Rakyat” programme at the Gombak wet market here this afternoon, the Umno deputy president claimed that the BN had proven itself over the past two years after its dismal performance in Election 2008.
“Why did we lose Wangsa Maju? Perhaps some people (here) had felt left behind... perhaps some were dissatisfied. They said we were a little action (conceited).
“But now, Umno and the BN are no longer action. Our appetites have changed, we go down to the ground, we meet with traders,” he told the crowd.
During the 12th general election in March 2008, the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat was won by PKR’s candidate Wee Choo Keong. Wee however has since left the party to become an independent and is now a part of a five-member pact called Konsensus Bebas, comprising four other former PKR MPs.
Muhyiddin (pic) said that the BN admitted to its past mistakes and had now “changed”.
“Perhaps we made mistakes before but we have worked towards changing ourselves, towards repairing those mistakes. I believe that over the past two years until today, we have proven ourselves to the people.
“That is why I am saying that if the Prime Minister calls for snap polls tomorrow, there is no reason why we (BN) will not win Wangsa Maju with an even bigger majority,” he said.
He reminded the Wangsa Maju folk not to be swayed by PR because he claimed voting them in would destroy the nation’s future.
“I would like to remind you – do not be mistaken. They will promise you the sun, the moon and the stars but nothing comes out of it.
“They keep calling us a racist government but how can we be racist when there are people of all races in the BN? We are a government that is truly representative of the people.
“I want the people to be aware... do not destroy our futures by believing the accusations and allegations made by the opposition when in truth, they are the ones who do not have the ability to manage a government,” he said.
Muhyiddin cited Selangor, helmed by Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim of the PKR, as an example of what he claimed was a badly-run state government.
“Look at what happened to Selangor... they do not know how to handle the water issue, the sand issue. It is not that difficult.
“When you fail to solve a problem, you lose the people’s confidence, investor’s confidence. Yet, they claim they can do anything but in truth, ‘cakap mereka tak serupa bikin’ (their words differ from their actions),” he said.
With a smile, Muhyiddin then likened PR leaders to the “kakaktua” bird (cockatoo) as they were only good in talking.
“They can sing but in truth, they do not know what they are doing. Can we have confidence in these sort of leaders? Everyday, they travel the country, telling lies about the government.
“Everything that the BN does is wrong. But I am confident now that the people have begun to realise (the truth),” he said.
Muhyiddin claimed that BN had been consistent in its struggle for the people, pointing out that the very essence of the Prime Minister’s 1Malaysia platform was to place the people as top priority.
“This is why from before until today, we have never shirked our responsibilities. That is why the PM, who is also the Umno president and the BN chairman, always tells us not to separate ourselves from the people.
“No matter what the situation, we want to ensure that we will always give the people whatever help we can to ensure that they will lead comfortable lives,” he said.
Muhyiddin said that one of the government’s primary aim was to raise the income level of Malaysians and achieve an income per capita of US$10,000 in 10 years’ time.
He urged petty traders not to become complacent and to have big ambitions to own bigger businesses of their own in the future.
“We want our income, our economy to see exponential growth. That is the purpose of the New Economic Model,” he said.

Firstly, Umno-led BN has no right to be 'action'. You had better remember WHO your BOSS is! If you continue to be arrogant and insolent even though no longer as 'action' as before, you will surely die in the next general election.

Ketua Setiausaha tak faham beza antara kerajaan dan entiti politik! MALU!

Decline in moral accountability?

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan has made himself look very foolish by asking whether it is wrong for civil servants to attend functions held by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, as he is the DAP secretary-general.

Sidek is apparently trying to justify the presence and participation of Penang state development officer Nik Ali
Mat Yunus at an Umno press conference, where the officer verbally lambasted Guan Eng and issued prepared press statements to criticize the chief minister.

I am simply amazed that the country's top civil servant doesn't even understand the simple basic difference between a government and a political entity, and respect the very important fundamental principle of impartiality and neutrality of the civil service.

Of course, civil servants have every right to accompany the chief minister or any minister to any function required by their duty to do so. When they attend and participate at such official state functions, including a state-initiated media conference, they are merely doing their job as civil servants serving the elected government of the day. They are not involved in partisan political activities, even though the chief minister or any other minister may be a leader of a political party.

When Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng holds a media conference and has the state secretary with him to brief the press on matters of the state, the state secretary is not violating the civil service code by being there. In fact, it is his duty to be there to help the chief minister answer questions from the press.

But if DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng attends a Teoh Beng Hock memorial service held by his party, a civil servant can only be there in his private personal capacity as Beng Hock's friend. He cannot be there on duty as civil servent accompanying Guan Eng.

In Nik Ali's case, he is definitely wrong to attend and participate in a press conference called by Umno to run down the chief minister. He has broken the sacrosanct cardinal principle of the impartiality of the civil service, and must face disciplinary action for it.

It is simply beyond comprehension that Sidek as Chief Secretary to the Government should endorse such a crude and uncouth behaviour and unconstitutional action by a senior civil servant.

Sidek has put himself in a very embarrasing position by giving a very silly comparison of himself holding a press conference together with the prime minister, and that of Nik Ali's participation of the Umno press conference.

“Is it be wrong if I hold a media conference with Datuk Seri Najib Razak? If it is his job as the prime minister and my job as the chief secretary, then it is not wrong I hold a press conference with him,” Sidek said.

Of course, it is not wrong! It is his job as chief secretary to serve the prime minister and accompany him if so required.

But Nik Ali's case is defintely not the same. As a civil servant, he should be non-partisan and should not be involved in politicking with Umno.

If Sidek does not understand such a simple distinction between what is government and what is politics, he is not fit to be the country's top civil servant.

And, even assuming that Nik Ali is a victim of harassment by the chief minister, there is a proper official channel for him to file his grievance and complaint -- to the Public Service Department head. Why should Nik Ali use, or rather allowed himself to be used, by a political party to launch an attack on the chief minister?

It is certainly ominous, in fact even sinister, that Nik Ali should chose to use a political vehicle to rucn down the chief minister elected by the people of Penang.

And, it surely is baleful that we have a Chief Secretary to the Government who would condone and absolve a senior civil servant from making political attacks against an elected government head.

The fact that Sidek has announced that no action would be taken against Nik Ali for his verbal assault on the chief minister deserves my commiseration to my fellow Malaysians for the decline in moral accoutability in our beloved country.

And, while I am still on this Nik Ali issue, I would like to comment on another ridiculous statement, this time by Penang Gerakan chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan who condemned Guan Eng for the fiasco.

Teng alleged that Guan Eng was out to gain political mileage and strengthen his position to garner more votes and support from the public in the next general election.

It is certainly ludicrous that Teng should make such a preposterous statement, but, seeing that he is from Gerakan, it is not surprising since most of its leaders are incongruously inept and lack the intelligence, let alone intellect, to understand basic issues affecting the people.

Teng and the imbeciles in Gerakan should throw in the towel and retire permanently from Penang since they are of no relevance and pertinence in the state.

They should stop making themselves look inane with their vacuous statements.

Constitutionally, public servants are to serve the government of the day!

So says political analyst Abdul Aziz Bari in the article 'Federal officers choose to be political tools of the BN'.

Abdul Aziz said that in Malaysia, public servants were working to save the BN government. At the same time, they were helping to undermine the Pakatan. He said this was not constitutional democracy but constitutional anarchy and pointed out that in the United Kingdom, the Labour government allowed public servants to brief Conservatives and Liberals who were trying to form government after the April elections that resulted in a hung parliament.

Abdul Aziz also said that constitutionally speaking, public servants - including members of the armed forces and police force - were there to serve the government of the day, whatever their colour and shape.

SHAH ALAM, July 23 — Tan Boon Wah said today he only caught a fleeting glimpse of Teoh Beng Hock just hours before the DAP political aide was found dead at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Selangor headquarters here, last year.
The DAP Kajang municipal councillor also denied having a heated argument with Teoh, in his testimony today at a coroner’s inquest into the political aide’s death.
Tan told the court he only saw Teoh for “five seconds” at the pantry, when he was on the way to the bathroom.
“I saw him pacing back and forth in the pantry while looking at the floor,” he said.
“I saw him for four to five seconds.”
Earlier Tan testified that he was confined to the interrogation room from 9pm on July 15 until 10am on July 16.
He said that during the interrogation he was forced to stand straight for four hours.
“When I moved, the interrogation officer would threaten me and say, ‘if you move again, I will hit you! You don’t believe me? He said while pointing his finger near my face,” he said.
He added that he was mocked because of his ethnicity.
“(The officer said) you don’t understand me? Stupid Chinese,” he said.
He said that the interrogators continued to ask about his family and if he loved his wife.
“(The officer said)I sympathise with you. I will bring your children here and make you cry in front of them,” he said.
He said that the interrogators would leave the room every 15 minutes and sometimes leave him standing in the dark while they were outside.
In the early morning of July 16, Tan decided to use the toilet after sleeping on the floor in the interrogation room.
Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo asked what was the time when he went to the toilet.
Tan: It was near dawn around 5 or 6am. On the way to the toilet, I saw that in the windows that it was getting brighter outside.
Tan said that he saw Teoh at the pantry when he was on his way to the toilet.
Gobind: What was Teoh doing?
Tan: I saw him and I said ‘Beng Hock, you are still here?’ But he did not respond.
Gobind: Did you have any discussions with him?
Tan: No, I didn’t. I just went straight to the toilet. I wanted to talk to him afterwards but he was no longer there.
MACC lawyer Abdul Razak Musa asked if Tan had volunteered to go to MACC so that his wife would not be interrogated.
No,” Tan replied.
Abdul Razak:  Did the MACC officers say that they wanted to record a statement from your wife?
Tan : No
Abdul Razak: Were you angry with the deceased ( Teoh) because it was him that led you to be summoned?
Tan: No
Abdul Razak: Were you angry because the deceased over claimed (on the flags)?
Tan: No
Abdul Razak: Please don’t just say no because I have all the documents.
Gobind stood up to object and said that Abdul Razak was threatening the witness.
Abdul Razak then proceeded and said Tan’s statement was fabricated to tarnish MACC’s image.
Abdul Razak: Is it not true that your entire testimony was fabricated to tarnish the good name of MACC?
Tan: No
Abdul Razak: Is it not true that when you met with the deceased, you said,  ‘This is all your fault.’
Tan: No and that is a fabrication.
Teoh, the political secretary to Selangor state councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16, last year on a fifth-floor overhang at Plaza Masalam, nine storeys below the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) then state headquarters.
He had been questioned overnight by anti-graft officers investigating a state fund abuse claim against his boss.
The MACC wants four witnesses to testify in relation to their probe into Teoh’s alleged involvement in state fund abuse.
Coroner Azmil Munthapa Abas instead directed the IO to record the statements from the four unnamed businessmen before making a decision.
However it was learned today that one of the four had already passed way.
Azmil decided that court does not have the expertise to evaluate the statements and ordered MACC to have a psychologist to make an analysis on the witnesses to determine Teoh’s state of mind.
The magistrate will then decide if the statements are admissible from the analysis report.
The inquest has been adjourned to August 9.

In schools, a crackdown on non-Muslim clubs: True colours of 1Malaysia ;)

In schools, a crackdown on non-Muslim clubs

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 —  Students, parents, teachers and religious representatives are complaining of a systematic effort by education officials to frustrate their initiatives to hold religious activities in national schools, despite a decade-old Education Ministry guide allowing non-Muslim societies in schools.
More have now stepped forward to report the “illegal” dissolution of non-Muslim religious clubs in schools following a newspaper report earlier this month highlighting such an incident at Klang High School.
Today, several Buddhist and Christian religious representatives called on the Najib administration not to neglect the spiritual well-being of the non-Muslim community, at an MCA press conference here.
They reminded the Cabinet to stop dragging its feet over the long-standing issue and to take immediate steps to correct confusion — deliberate or otherwise — over the education ministry’s stand promoting holistic religious education for the nation’s future.
“Today’s meeting is not the first time,” MCA deputy publicity chief, Loh Seng Kok, told reporters, describing his talks earlier with parents and religious representatives, including from the Young Buddhists’ Association of Malaysia (YBAM), Buddhist Association of Subang Jaya and the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM).
Loh added the issue had also been raised at his party’s presidential council meeting earlier this year, where MCA Youth Chief, Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, who is also the Deputy Education Minister had been quizzed, but admitted “there has been no reply from Cabinet” to date.

Malaysia’s reputation for religious harmony took a beating earlier this year, following attacks on several houses of worship after a court ruling allowed the Catholic Church to publish the word “Allah” outside the Muslim context.
Father of three, Chin Fook Khiang, disclosed to The Malaysian Insider that Klang High was not the only public school to have shut down its non-Muslim religious clubs.
The 53-year-old said SMK SS17 in Subang Jaya, Selangor, had without warning ordered the school’s Buddhist Society and Christian Fellowship to stop holding meetings and carrying out religious activities in January last year, stunning students and parents alike.
The two non-Muslim religious clubs had been running for nearly 15 years, since the school was established, but were suddenly ordered to disband ostensibly because they were not registered with the state education department.
Chin added it was not the first time education authorities had tried to shut down non-Muslim religious activities in the school, and related an attempt in 2005 by a district education officer to close the Christian and Buddhist clubs for the same reasons, but added it had been foiled by the previous school head.
The school’s then-headmaster, Ahmad Akim, had defended the two clubs’ right to continue, pointing to a state education circular issued on December 16, 2000, which provided for “any school that already has an established Non-Muslim Religious Club to carry on”.
Only the clubs that had yet to be formed before the circular was issued were required to write in to the state education director for approval.
“It’s very sad because the rules are very clear. The guidelines are very clear, but somehow along the way, little Napoleons have chosen to interpret [the provisions in the circular] according to their whims and fancies,” Chin criticised.
Christians were not the only group with the dilemma, nor was SMK SS17 the only school in the district barred from carrying out religious activities for non-Muslims, said Subang Jaya Buddhist Association president, Chim Siew Choon, who was alerted to the school’s directive by its Buddhist students.
“Christianity and Buddhism are among the five mainstream non-Muslim religions accepted and recognised by the government, so what’s the problem to have religious activities in schools?” he asked, noting that the school clubs were essential to develop the spiritual well-being of students for a holistic education.
Chim said he had approached Deputy Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong early last year to help resolve the issue, and was initially reassured by the latter’s reply promising to look into the matter.
But he found his confidence in the deputy minister crumbling by the day, as the federal government continues to drag its feet.
“It’s very disappointing. It’s already been one year since the issue was raised. It’s not something impossible to solve, it’s a very straightforward issue,” Chim said.
“On one hand, the government is trying to promote the principles in the Rukun Negara… but some people are sabotaging the government’s effort,” he added, but refused to elaborate on the identities of the individuals.
A school official contacted by The Malaysian Insider yesterday declined to comment on the issue, citing a gag order by the Selangor state education department.
“I’m sorry, but we were told not to speak to the press,” the official apologised.
The school spokesman, who asked not to be named, added the principal has been trying to meet with the state education director for clarification.
The Malaysian Insider understands the problem is not also limited to Selangor.
A teacher in neighbouring Negri Sembilan said there has been continued pressure on non-Muslim students to stop having religious activities in school for decades.
The 56-year-old, who has been teaching for 32 years, said state education authorities “strongly discourage anything to do with non-Muslim religions in schools”.
“There’s no black-and-white from the [state education] department to say that, but that’s what usually happens,” he said.
“You can have clubs for cultural or moral activities but not for Hindus, Christians or Buddhists,” he told The Malaysian Insider, requesting anonymity for fear of backlash from the authorities.
A Hindu, the teacher recalled how a second camp for Hindu students planned for this weekend had to be shelved at the last minute after school officials told the organisers to first clear the red tape with the state education authorities.
“There was no obstruction for the first camp in May held at the Seremban Lake Gardens,” he said.
“It’s very unfair. How come we non-Muslims are not allowed when Islam is allowed and considered a help to build character?” he quizzed.
“All religions promote good values. Having religious knowledge is good for students. It gives them values that can help them in life,” he stressed.

Azhar tak mampu jaga Penaga, skrg nak sibuk hal Kg Jalan Pokok Asam!!

When Penang opposition leader Azhar Ibrahim spoke up for Malay villages being demolished in Kg Jalan Pokok Asam, little did he realise it would open a can of worms revealing similar eviction crisis, brought about by the federal authorities, in his own state constituency, Penaga. Besides Penanga, several other constituencies held by Umno assemblypersons are also suffering similar woes, such as Bayan Lepas and Tasek Gelugor, but the issue has had little coverage in the media.

Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusuf Rawa demanded that Azhar, who is state Umno secretary, refrain from interfering in the affairs of Jelutong "when his own home is not in order". Mujahid also
said several villages in Azhar's constituency had been issued with eviction notices from the federal authorities, and he had done nothing to help the villagers.

Umno-connected man questioned over RM11 mil Austalian kickbacks

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is reported to have interrogated a businessman over RM11.3 million in commissions he allegedly received from two Australian companies to secure Malaysian government contracts to print banknotes. Melbourne's The Age newspaper reported that the Australian authorities have requested MACC's help in its investigation into the RM134 million (A$47.5 million) in commissions paid by banknote firms Securency and Note Printing Australia - both subsidiaries of Australia's central bank, Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).- over a six-year period.

THE police inquiry into alleged bribery by Reserve Bank of Australia subsidiaries has had a major breakthrough, with an overseas witness providing details about alleged kickbacks to Malaysian officials.
A Malaysian businessman has been interviewed by anti-corruption authorities in Kuala Lumpur about his work as a middleman for RBA banknote firms Securency and Note Printing Australia between the late 1990s and 2007.
Intelligence from the interviews has been sent to the Australian Federal Police taskforce investigating whether executives of the two RBA subsidiaries breached anti-bribery laws due to their knowledge of payments made to foreign officials to help win banknote supply and printing contracts.
The RBA owns half of Securency and all of Note Printing Australia. RBA-appointed directors are responsible for supervising the firms, including during the period in which the alleged corruption occurred.
A source aware of the work of Malaysian anti-corruption authorities said the middleman provided details about the $4 million in commissions he received from Securency and Note Printing Australia.
The middleman was paid the money to help the RBA firms win currency supply and printing contracts from Malaysia's central bank due to his claimed high-level connections in the country's ruling UMNO political party.

Why does Anuar Shaari think it's all about the money? Good people help others freely

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- The issue on the amount of money spent and who was paying for the lawyer to accompany former private investigator P.Balasubramaniam while in London and Paris was raised Thursday.

Anuar Shaari, a former private secretary to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said the question now was how much money was paid to the lawyers who not only accompanied Balasubramaniam to London but also to Paris.

Balasubramaniam, who is now in India, had made a statutory declaration on the murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu on July 3, 2008, but on the following day retracted the sworn statement and replaced it with a second sworn statement before disappearing abroad.

Earlier this month, Balasubramaniam appeared in London to give a press statement besides facing the French authorities in Paris later on the contract for the sale of the submarine built by French company DCNS to Malaysia.

Anuar, in his press conference, also repeated the proposal by Umno Supreme Council member, Dr Mohd Puad Zarkhasi, who is also a Deputy Education Minister, on July 8 that the Inland Revenue Board and the Royal Malaysian Customs investigated the source of funds received by the lawyer.

PM splurges RM50k in attempt for US coverage, additional RM50k as a 'success fee'

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak paid RM50,000 (US$15,000) to a Washington-based political consultant in April this year in an attempt to get an opinion-editorial article written by him published in one of the major newspapers in the United States.

The prime minister will have to fork out an additional RM50,000 as a 'success fee' to the consultant, Quinn Gillespie & Associates (QGA), should the article eventually appear in print. QGA is a top public relations and lobbying firm in Washington DC. This information is revealed in documents filed under the Foreign Agents Registration Act by QGA. According to the documents obtained by Malaysiakini, QGA was assigned by another consultancy firm, The Laurus Group, to try and convince a major US newspaper to carry Najib's article.

Abdul Gani: Not easy to bring back Raja Petra. Must follow law, you know!!!

M'sia happy with Britain's cooperation in blogger probe

Raja Petra Kamaruddin
KUALA LUMPUR (July 21, 2010): Malaysia is satisfied with Britain's cooperation in investigations pertaining to blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, who is reportedly in London.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said the matter must be handled according to legal channels, with one country repecting the laws of another.

"Yes, I have no complaints. Everything has got to be done by legal means. One does not flout another country's laws and it is much more, even so, for the authorities in both countries to respect the laws of the other country," he said.

Abdul Gani was speaking at a press conference after the signing of the Treaty on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters between Malaysia and Britain here today, to cooperate in the prevention and combating of transnational criminal activities.

Asked if the treaty would help in bringing back Raja Petra from London, the attorney-general said: "It will help in all cases, not only Raja Petra.

"But remember, we still have to comply with each other's laws. This is not simple."

Abdul Gani said, there was no extradition treaty between Malaysia and Britan, and that was a separate process from the treaty signed today.

However, he said Malaysia could make a request to any country on the directive of the home minister, and subjected to the laws of the country involved.

"There has always been an understanding on this extradition but so far,  we have not made any application to the United Kingdom for a proper extradition treaty.

"An extradition treaty is a matter for us to think about later, but we are very happy with this mutual assistance treaty today," said Abdul Gani.

Raja Petra fled the country after two warrants of arrest were issued, following his failure to be present in court proceedings on April 23 and May 23 last year, for allegedly posting seditious and slanderous articles on his website.

Asked if written replies by former private investigator S. Balasubramaniam to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was admissible in a court of law in this country, Abdul Gani replied:  "Whatever MACC does, it has to comply with our laws to determine admissibility. You don't actually need to have your statement recorded by the police.

Documents are all admissible in court, provided you comply with the law. So, it's fine with me," he said.

The private eye courted controversy when he made two conflicting sworn declarations related to the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu.

The MACC recently decided against going to London to record a statement from Balasubramaniam and instead, submitted questions for him via his lawyer. -- Bernama
