Najib and Muhyiddin increasingly nervous. They will 'bed the rakyat' soon!

Najib and Muhyiddin to stay with locals during road trip

TEMERLOH: The Prime Minister and his deputy will spend two days with the local people at each kampung or Felda settlement they visit during their nationwide road trip from next month.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will kick off their meet-the-people tour in Sarawak, where a state election is expected before June.

Programme coordinator Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the Government had planned the tour over the past two months and felt it was time to announce it to the public.

“This shows the Barisan Nasional is walking the talk (in touching base with the people),” he said outside the nomination centre for the Kerdau by-election here yester-day.

Hishammuddin, who is Home Minister and an Umno vice-president, said under the programme Najib and Muhyiddin would be in two different states each month.

“At each place the two leaders visit, they will stay with the people for at least two days.

“Whether it is in a Felda scheme or a kampung, the PM and DPM will be staying there to connect with the rakyat,” Hishammuddin said.

The first round of the nationwide tour is expected to be completed in September, after which the next round will begin until the next general election is held.

Hishammuddin refuted suggestions that the programme is a Barisan “general election roadshow.”

He added: “The date for the next general election has not even been decided.”

In other words, you non-Malays be grateful for Malays' willingness to share

Dr M credits country’s success to Malays’ willingness to share

Conversely, if Malays were unwilling to share, the country would not have succeeded.

In conclusion, non-Malays had better be grateful for Malays' willingness to share.

What say you, MCA, the running dog of Umno?

Evidence of alleged corruption in Sarawak Report: MACC DISINTERESTED

A British journalist who runs an website and online radio critical of Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Abdul Mahmud says that her task is not to oust the long-time leader.

NONE In an email interview with Malaysiakini, Clare Rewcastle Brown, who runs the fiercely anti-Taib website Sarawak Report which has exposed the chief minister's alleged global business empire and corrupt activities, said, “I do not see it as my job to bring down Taib. That is for the Sarawakian people to decide.”
Rewcastle Brown, who is sister-in-law of former British prime minister Gordon Brown. is also responsible for underground radio station Radio Free Sarawak, which began broadcasting in November last year on shortwave, said, “I just want to make sure that they receive all the information about what has been happening to their resources and to their wealth, so that they can make an informed choice.”

She argues that she is providing a "vital service from a safe distance" because Sarawakians right to a free press was being denied by the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA) and abuse of power and points out that it is up to Sarawakians how they wish to spread the news.
NONE

The former BBC journalist, who began her career in 1983, also adds that her work relies only on material that can be proven as most of it is a matter of public record and she would readily hand over evidence to the Malaysian authorities.

“Despite several invitations to reply to our accusations, we have heard nothing back from Taib Mahmud, . We would be only too delighted to hand over all this evidence to the Malaysian police and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission should they show the slightest interest though most of it they could have accessed themselves anyway without much trouble,” she said.

The brains behind Sarawak Report and Radio Free Sarawak  were revealed on Wednesday when they decided to go public following several death threats.

Malaysia’s F1 event losing its lustre: Classic tale of Malaysia Boleh! YEAH

Friday February 25, 2011

SIC chief: Malaysia’s F1 event losing its lustre

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Sepang Formula One event is losing traction, according to the circuit’s boss who admitted the shabby stadium and tropical temperatures have caused ticket sales to plunge.
The Malaysian event has also been outshone by neighbouring Singapore, which offers not just adrenaline-packed night racing on a street circuit, but teams it with live entertainment by big-name performers like Beyonce.
Razlan Razali, chief executive of the Sepang International Circuit, said that Malaysians increasingly preferred to watch the race on television rather than brave the afternoon heat.
“It has lost its lustre,” Razlan said in an interview with AFP.
“Having Singapore next to us for F1 does not help and our biggest competitor is the television as many people prefer to watch the race from the comfort of their homes.”
Despite ticket prices going for as low as US$19, the cheapest on the F1 circuit, the 13-year-old Sepang event which has a daily capacity of 130,000 has not been pulling in the crowds.
Razlan said that last year just 97,000 people were drawn to the circuit over three days. In 2009 there were 126,000 while 2006 recorded the biggest crowd with 140,000 over three days.
The circuit boss admitted that Sepang is a “tired-looking” venue in urgent need of rejuvenation.
But he said he has received no reply after petitioning the government to fund a major overhaul at a cost of RM180mil (US$59mil).
Sepang’s soaring roof, inspired by the hibiscus which is Malaysia’s national flower, need to be replaced as the grandstand canopy has exceeded its lifespan and cannot cope with Malaysia’s tropical downpours.
“When it rains, it leaks. People are not happy. The circuit was built in a record time but unfortuntely there were shortcuts and poor maintainance,” he said.
The sport’s ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone proclaimed Singapore as the “jewel in F1’s crown” when the city-state hosted its first night race in 2008.
But in crushing comments for Malaysia, he likened Sepang to “an old house that needs a bit of redecorating.”
“It’s starting to get a little shabby and looks a bit tired. There is rubbish all over the place and it’s not really a good sign for Malaysia,” Ecclestone said at the time.
Razlan, who took over shortly after Ecclestone aired his criticism, said that to counter the decline, Sepang should stage a night race before its rights to host F1 expire in 2015.
“We should do one night race before we extend the 2015 contract. Maybe this will attract a bigger crowd as the weather at night will be cool.”
Other Asia-Pacific countries that host Formula One races are Australia, China and South Korea. India holds its first race this year.
But Razlan said that despite its shortcomings, the Malaysian event has a strong impact on the national tourism industry as it is beamed live across the globe, providing priceless publicity.
“(Financially) it is a loss-making event but the economic impact to the country is great,” he said.
Malaysia will host the second leg of this year’s Formula One calendar on April 10 after the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix scheduled for March 13 was cancelled due to the deadly political unrest in the Gulf state.
Razlan said that so far demand for the 13th Malaysian Grand Prix has been disappointing, and well short of the targetted average of 33,000 a day over the three-day event.
“In November we began our promotion. We have sold 6,000 tickets to foreigners. However, the domestic market is yet to pick up,” he said. — AFP

Merlimau voter living without water for more than two decades gets attention

After more than two decades living without water, the by-election has finally brought welcome news for Merlimau voter C Ragunathan.

Soon after Malaysiakini reported his predicament last week, the dairy farmer received visits from politicians and representatives of government agencies suddenly keen to solve his problems.

When met yesterday, Ragunathan said, "After the report, representatives of the state water agency came and inspected our premises and enquired about how we source for water. Even the health department came to ask if we put chlorine in the well we use for drinking water...But they didn't promise to provide running water."

Ahh no worries, Ragu. I think soon you will enjoy 'unlimited' water supply if you vote for BN.

Can copy Malaysia, yes but don't copy the corruption that BN is famous for

Najib tells BBC that Muslim nations can copy Malaysia

February 24, 2011
Najib: In case of Malaysia, it is very much like Turkey. Without having to blow our own trumpet, we have a modern system, much like Turkey.
ISTANBUL, Feb 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said Malaysia has proven that its system of governance, based on moderate Islam, has worked and can be a good model for other countries in the world to emulate, especially Islamic countries.
He said in view of what was taking place in the world today, it was important to ensure that the system of administration adopted was working.
The key consideration, he said, was that “if you have a system, would it work to produce good and effective governance?”
Najib said this as a panellist at the Global Movement for Justice, Peace and Dignity Conference, here, Wednesday.
The session was recorded by BBC World News to be aired by the channel at a later date. It was moderated by BBC journalist Zeinab Badawi.
The other panellists included Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan, Paramadina University of Indonesia president Dr Anies Baswedan and Arab Business Council co-founder/vice-chairman Khalid Abdulla-Janahi.
Najib said a good and effective governance could deliver the goods and services to the people.
“A good system allows the people to participate in the system, it empowers the people to decide their own destiny.
“In case of Malaysia, it is very much like Turkey. Without having to blow our own trumpet, we have a modern system, much like Turkey.
“Therefore, we can offer the Malaysian model because it has worked. From a relatively poor nation whose economy was based on agriculture, we have moved to industrialising the economy.
“Now, we have planned initiatives for the next phase. We have a very detailed roadmap of transformation. The next wave of transformation is to become a high-income nation,” said Najib.
He said the success of a system was not just about numbers but also about whether it could improve the quality of life, and about good values, ensuring fairness, rule of law, being inclusive, having social safety net and caring for the poor.
“These are the things that we have put in place in Malaysia. So, in this regard, I believe we have something to offer to the world.”
Nevertheless, he said, every nation would have to look at its needs based on its own peculiarities and had to make adjustments to the values, to empower the people to a more prosperous and better future.
When asked by Zeinab Badawi whether the Malaysian model was a better model for an Islamic country than the Turkish, Najib’s response which drew laughter from the audience was, “I have to be careful on this as I am in Turkey.”
The Malaysian prime minister said it was an important thing for Malaysia to choose its own destiny.
“And the way we have developed our political structure is that Islam plays an integral part in the country’s policies and administration.
“We cannot separate Islam from the government in Malaysia. But having said that, it is also Islam that is moderate that we apply in Malaysia. For example, Islam in Malaysia is not associated with violence, Islam in Malaysia is benign and that is being practised by and large,” he added.
The conference was jointly organised by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia and International Movement For A Just World (JUST) in conjunction with Najib’s three-day official visit to Turkey from Feb 21-23. — Bernama

Teoh's RCI: Pornthip to testify for third time! Will it make any difference?

Flamboyant forensics expert Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand of Thailand has confirmed she will testify before the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Teoh Beng Hock's death.

RCI secretary Saripuddin Kasim said in a statement that Pornthip had responded to their request and a date was being set for Pornthip to testify.

In the meantime, the RCI has also secured the help of the Malaysian High Commission in London to contact Prof Dr Peter Vanezis to give his expert opinion as well.

NONEBoth Pornthip (right) who was engaged by the Selangor government and Vanezis who was brought in by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission were engaged to give their expert opinions during the inquest into Teoh's death.

Pornthip, the expert with the Thai Ministry of Justice's Forensic Science Institute, shocked the nation when she revealed that the second post-mortem on Teoh's body proved that he did not commit suicide. Also, she said there was an 80 percent chance that Teoh's death was homicide.

Vanezis disagreed with Pornthip's assertion, stating that the Teoh's injuries showed he was most likely "conscious" and "fully orientated".

The RCI was formed in late January, after the 18-month long inquest returned an open verdict.

Two 'opposing' opinions yet an open verdict! Neither here nor there!

The coroner could have just made MACC happy!

Najib is a 'populist'. Dr M warns against tolls takeover for polls popularity

February 22, 2011
Dr M: If a government chooses to be popular and disregard the essentials of good management, especially that of infrastructures, one should not be surprised if the nation fails to grow.
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad appeared today to warn the government against rolling back the privatisation of infrastructure projects saying that the government is not a charitable organisation and such moves could hurt the economy.
The former prime minister’s remarks come as the Najib administration is attempting to tackle the unpopularity of the numerous tolled highways in the country that had mushroomed during the Mahathir era and that had long been a focus of attacks by opposition parties.
He added that the people must understand how the economy works and that the government is not a charitable organisation with unlimited funds.
“If a government chooses to be popular and disregard the essentials of good management, especially that of infrastructures, one should not be surprised if the nation fails to grow,” Dr Mahathir was reported as saying today by national news agency Bernama at the 1st World Congress and Exhibition on Infrastructure Asset Management here today.
Dr Mahathir said that toll nationalisation, one of the highlights of the Pakatan Rakyat’s reform agenda if it takes power, would hurt government finances and have negative consequences on the country.
He claimed that the cost of acquiring the toll concessions would come from the government’s consolidated funds and the nationalisation of concessions would mean less tax revenue for the government.
“Since no tolls will be charged, the government will not earn money from it and there will also be no tax collected from the private companies that were running the road operations as they will not have a source of income,” he said.  “I suspect the quality of highways will also deteriorate (eventually).”
He added that less revenue would impact developments as money is diverted to the running and maintenance of the highways, potentially slowing down the nation’s growth.
“(People) will also need to reduce the standard of living,” said Dr. Mahathir. “We can forget Vision 2020 and being a high-income economy and remain a third world country.”
While Datuk Seri Najib Razak has not called for the nationalisation of toll highways, he has made moves in recent months to head off discontent by announcing a rash of initiatives led by government linked investment institutions and businessmen to reduce and abolish tolls.
These include a 5-year freeze on toll rates on four highways owned by government controlled PLUS Expressways that was announced in the 2011 budget and no toll increase for the next five years at the Karak and East Coast Phase One highways operated by subsidiaries of MTD Capital.
The toll for the East-West link highway at the Salak and Taman Connaught interchange in Kuala Lumpur is expected to be abolished in May and the toll at the Petaling Jaya Selatan 2 toll plaza along the New Pantai Expressway was reduced by RM0.60 last week. Najib had also urged other toll concessionaires to take up similar initiatives for the public’s benefit.
PKR deputy president Azmin Ali however claimed victory over Najib’s push to freeze and abolish tolls saying that it was a concession on the part of the prime minister that Pakatan Rakyat’s reform proposals are workable.

Yes, Najib will do anything to make himself to appear to be appealing to the interests or prejudices of ordinary people!

SPAD, acting like 'Ah Longs', stuck notices on trees in front of TTDI homes!

February 22, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 — Residents of Jalan Pinggir Zaaba, Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) here are having sleepless nights worrying about their homes which they are set to lose to the proposed mass rapid transit (MRT) system come May.
On February 10, they were shocked to find land acquisition notices stuck on trees in front their homes.
Residents who spoke to The Malaysian Insider said it was disrespectful to paste the notice on trees and also unprofessional for the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) to do such a thing.
“Being forced to leave the residential area is like commanding me to divorce my wife of 23 years,” said a disgruntled Salleh Muhammad.
The notice tells residents that the government is in the process of implementing the Klang Valley MRT project and that their land is more likely to be acquired for the project.
Although the homes in Jalan Pinggir Zaaba are not as grand as those in nearby Taman Zaaba, many were recently renovated.

Standing in front his newly-renovated home, Helmi is lost for words over the MRT project.
For someone who just renovated his home of 11 years last November, Helmi Al’ Attas said he could only feel cheated and sad after learning about the land acquisition notice.
“I saved really hard over the period of 11 years to renovate my home,” said Helmi who bought his property for more than RM400,000 at the time.
“My son spent at least RM500,000 on his home and that does not include renovations. We wanted to live close by and this is what we get,” said a retired teacher who only identified herself as Mrs Wong.
Her home, together with 32 others including a corner lot her son just moved into a month ago, will be affected by the MRT project.
She said she has lived on the road for 34 years, “long enough to witness the birth of TTDI.”
Residents here pointed out that they have not objected to many projects in the neighbourhood that have disrupted their peace.
Having already lost their “feng shui” due to a three-metre-high wall built 20 metres from their gates, the residents have broken their silence and questioned the need for the MRT project in their area.

The SPAD notice stuck on a tree.
“Back then, my house cost me just RM55,600. It is now worth a million due to the area and its developments,” said Mrs Wong, who said she would welcome an underground train project rather than an elevated one.
Pouring out her distress over the prospect of having to relocate, she told The Malaysian Insider that she welcomes development in TTDI but not if it will cost the residents their homes.
“We let them build roads and block our houses with a brick wall which was supposed to minimise noise from the roads. But in the end, this is what we get for letting everything go,” she added.
Retiree Salleh’s main concern was parting with his neighbours who have become his best friends.
Salleh, who has been living in the area for 22 years, said he is comfortable being where he is as he and his family — spanning three generations — have grown accustomed to the noise coming from the road.
“At this time, I’m sceptical if I should or should not continue with the renovations,” said Helmi, who has organised and sent a petition to SPAD while still replacing the flooring of his home.
The residents are also unhappy with the inconsistent details on the project and the short time span given to debate on the issue.
“We are yet to receive a visit from SPAD but at the moment, I feel lost and speechless about the whole scenario,” said Helmi.

Look! Are they not Muslim children joining the celebration of Valentine love?

Monday February 14, 2011

A love that never grows old

KUALA TERENGGANU: An elderly couple from Kampung Bukit Bucu in Batu Rakit, here, celebrated Valentine’s Day early – and for the first time in their life.

The candlelight dinner for octogenarian Chin Yi Ai, 88, and his wife Tay Sek Hue, 79, was organised by six of their children, three of whom are now Muslims.

Chin and Tay married five decades ago but never celebrated Valentine’s Day due to family commitments.

“This is what Valentine’s Day is all about. During our younger days, we never had the chance to celebrate this event.
“I wish I was younger so I could express my undivided love to my wife during this auspicious day,” a frail Chin murmured when met on Saturday night.
The couple’s children and grandchildren were present to add to the merriment.
Chin’s only daughter, Faridah Chin Abdullah, 40, said her siblings decided to hold a Valentine’s Day dinner for their aging parents this year as they never had one before.
Faridah said she spoke to her Muslim brothers Abdul Manan Abdullah, 50, and Anuar Abdullah, 42, and they agreed.
“Islam promotes love and affection between people. We felt there was nothing wrong organising this dinner for our parents as our gift to them,” she said.
“I do agree from the Islamic viewpoint that unmarried couples should not celebrate as it could lead to immoral activities,” she said.

What a lovely sight!

Parents, children and grandchildren celebrating Valentine together!

The children (or grandchildren!) will surely grow up to be loving adults who will not fall into sexual sins!

They will only make love after their holy matrimony!

Valentine's Day is a very important day for us to impart good values to our children and grandchildren!

Dr Seah: Not possible to find other people's DNA inside the anus if attempted sodomy

Defence lawyer Karpal Singh stole the thunder in cross-examining a government chemist this morning, asking Dr Seah Lay Hong if she thinks sodomy complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan 'is a passive homosexual'.

The focus of the Sodomy II trial in the Kuala Lumpur High Court was on whether the Chemistry Department had followed international standards in handling DNA samples provided by the police.

Karpal, who was the last of the defence team to cross-examine Seah, a DNA specialist, questioned her about the multiple DNA profiles found in Saiful's rectum and asked, “Is it reasonable to conclude the victim is a passive homosexual?”

Seah said she was unable to answer the question, and Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah initially indicated he would not allow the question but when Karpal pointed the relevancy of the question, the judge backed down.

After the prosecution raised an objection, Karpal also asked Seah how someone's DNA could end up in Saiful's rectum if the pro-forma medical form states that the issue relates to an 'attempted sodomy', saying,  “If it is attempted sodomy, you will not find other people's DNA inside the anus?”

Seah said not possible.

Ahh...all the world, not just us Malaysians, can see and know that the Sodomy II trial's a stage and all the men and women merely players!

Dr Seah Lay Hong had not been sodomized before. So, she wouldn't know!

February 21, 2011

Saiful’s (right) DNA was found both on the sperm and non-sperm extracts. — file pic
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Sodomy II trial took a another twist today when defence lawyers suggested that one of the two DNA profiles from semen found in Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan’s anus belonged to the complainant himself.
Ramkarpal Singh, one of Anwar’s lawyers, argued that Dr Seah Lay Hong’s chemist report findings showed that seminal fluids found in Saiful’s high rectal area may be his own as Saiful’s DNA profile —  identified as profile “12, 13” — was more “dominant” than the DNA profile of an unidentified “Male Y.”
“Saiful is the main contributor in the high rectal swab.
“I suggest to you the profile in B8 (swab) is Saiful, therefore (it) can be interpreted that [his] semen was found up his own anus,” Ramkarpal told the court today.
Dr Seah, however, denied this, saying that there were two types of extracts found in high rectal area — non-sperm and sperm extracts.
Saiful’s DNA profile, according to the government scientist, fell in the first category.
“Yes even though Saiful’s DNA profile ‘12, 13’ was categorised under non-sperm extract, what Dr Seah has not answered is that his DNA is also found under the sperm extract of B8.
“Saiful’s DNA is not only the main contributor in this case, but it is also found in both extracts,” defence counsel Sankara Nair told The Malaysian Insider later.
The findings of the chemist report confirmed Sankara’s arguments, as Saiful’s DNA profiles were found both on the sperm extract and the non-sperm extract.
Earlier in court today, Anwar’s lawyers continued the cross-examination of Dr Seah by asking her to comment on the validity of the chemist report.
“You’ve got a situation here where ejaculation into anus was 56 hours before report. Would you expect to see degradation in sperm quality and DNA?” asked Ramkarpal.
In response, Dr Seah said that there was “no need” to take extra steps to determine degradation despite semen being in the anus for over two days.
“It’s hard to pinpoint degradation,” she said.
Ramkarpal also questioned why there were no seminal stains found on Saiful’s undergarments and trousers if semen had been ejaculated into the complainant’s anus.
Dr Seah refused to comment on the matter, and said that Ramkarpal’s question was just a “speculation.”
The trial will continue tomorrow morning with further cross-examination of the prosecution witness, as well as the re-examination by the prosecution.
Saiful had complained that Anwar, his ex-boss, had sodomised him at a luxury condominium in upper-class Bukit Damansara here on June 26, 2008.
Saiful, now aged 25, has never named anyone else.
Anwar, the 63-year-old PKR de facto leader, is currently facing sodomy charges for the second time in his life.
He has denied the charge, describing it as “evil, frivolous lies by those in power” when the charge was read out to him.
He is charged under section 377B of the Penal Code and can be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years’ jail and whipping upon conviction. The trial is taking place 18 months after Anwar was charged in court in August 2008.
He was charged with sodomy and corruption in 1998 after he was sacked from the Cabinet and was later convicted and jailed for both offences.
He was freed in September 2004 and later resurrected his political career by winning back his Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in a by-election in 2008, which had been held in the interim by his wife.
He led the opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, to a historic sweep of five states and 82 parliamentary seats in Election 2008.

Pic: Samsudin MohamedKUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- Public places are now safer and the security situation will be maintained in efforts to reduce crimes, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar.

Expressing his satisfaction on the safety of public places such as shopping complexes, he said the safe environment was felt by traders and tourists.

"Traders, revellers and tourists used to worry on the security situation. Now the level of safety is better and they have expressed their satisfaction with what we are doing," he told reporters after a walkabout in the Bukit Bintang commercial area here Thursday.

Bukit Bintang used to be one of 11 crime hotspots in the capital besides Brickfields, Kuchai Park, Taman Midah, Taman Connaught, Alam Damai, Bandar Sri Permaisuri, Jinjang Utara, Metro Prima Kepong and Danau Kota.

Ismail said the walkabout was featured in the police high-profile programme and was one of the initiatives under the National Key Result Areas which aimed at reducing crimes, particularly street crimes.

"I will go on another walkabout in Selangor tomorrow and followed by other states later," he said.

He said under the high performance programme, senior police officers and their men were required carry out surveys and meet the public.

PM: RM50 for credit card not a big deal

HUA HIN: Describing Budget 2010 as “painless”, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the people should not complain about the Government’s decision to impose a RM50 annual service tax on principal credit and charge cards.
Instead, the Prime Minister said they should look at the overall benefits offered by the Govern-ment in the Budget.
“They are getting the RM1,000 tax relief and those paying tax at 27% will now pay 26%.
“So, they get two (relief measures) and only have to pay RM50 (per credit card). Don’t tell me they cannot pay RM50?” he said after a meeting at the 15th Asean Summit here yesterday.
Najib, who arrived here on Friday after tabling the Budget in Parliament, had earlier asked the media on the reaction back home to his maiden Budget.

So, tell me. What's the big deal about RM0.60 cut in toll rate and abolishment of RM0.50 toll rate? Peanuts lah!

Operasi Lalang: Boleh percaya Hanif yang masuk Genting selepas bersara?

Mahathir is a liar, says Mohamad Sabu

 | February 10, 2011
A PAS leader says any detention beyond 60 days requires the endorsement of the home minister, who was none other Mahathir himself.
PETALING JAYA: Several opposition MPs trained their guns on former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for attempting to absolve himself from any wrong-doings over the infamous “Ops Lalang” arrests in 1987.
Calling Mahathir a liar, PAS vice-president Mohamad Sabu said the former prime minister could have released the detainees if he had wanted to.
“He was also the home minister then. I think he is trying to hide something,” said Mohamad Sabu.
In a book penned by Tom Plate titled “Doctor M: Operation Malaysaia – Conversations with Mahathir Mohamad”, Mahathir blamed the police for the crackdown in 1987.
He reportedly said, “Well, I would have handled it differently, except that the police wanted to do these things because they say it is necessary…
“I actually met all of the opposition members (beforehand) and assured them that they would not be arrested. And you know what the police did? They arrested them. My credibility is gone.”
DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, however, took a swipe at Mahathir yesterday for trying to pin the blame on the police alone, accusing the long-serving premier of spinning untruths.
Lim was one of those detained in the crackdown.
In Mahathir’s defence, the-then inspector-general of police (IGP), Haniff Omar, told an online portal today that the crackdown was entirely a police decision and the former premier had actually opposed the arrests.
Dastardly act
Mohamad Sabu said though the law allowed the police to detain anyone under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for a maximum of 60 days for questioning, any extension after that requires the endorsement of the home minister.
“That is why I do not believe Mahathir’s recent statement at all,” said Mohamad Sabu, who was detained for more than a year.
Suaram director, Kua Kia Soong, sarcastically said it was good that finally Mahathir now seemed to be ashamed to be affiliated with the arrests.
“And he should feel so after more than two decades of trying to justify the dastardly act,” he added.
Kua, who was also a former detainee, took potshots at Haniff for absolving Mahathir from the act.
“What do you expect of a former IGP who, upon retirement, was prepared to walk straight into a corporation that makes its money from gambling?”asked Kua, referring to Haniff, a Muslim, working as a director in a casino in Genting Highlands.
He added that Mahathir had craftily pounced on the ignorance of his interviewee (Plate) that a two-year detention needed his endorsement as the home minister.
“If the interviewee had asked him that, neither Mahathir nor Haniff would be able to wriggle out of that,” said Kua.
In a text message to FMT, fellow detainee, Kepong MP Tan Seng Giaw admitted that he had met Mahathir a few days before the crackdown but it was to discuss other matters.
“He is ultimately responsible for the arrests as he was in charge then,” said Tan, who was detained for eight months.
Downright lie
Another detainee, DAP’s Karpal Singh meanwhile labelled Mahathir’s remark as “a downright and unadultrated lie”.
He stressed that the police had acted as directed by Mahathir.
“He should not forget that he personally signed the detention orders … blaming the police now does not speak well of his maturity and credibility as a former premier,” he said in a statement.
Karpal added that Mahathir’s lie was futher nailed by the fact that he (Karpal) was rearrested under the ISA after Mahathir himself had signed the second detention order.
“I would advise Mahathir not to, in his twilight years, to make a spectacle of himself by lying through his teeth. I would have thought Mahathir would have retired peacefully,” he added.
In October 1987, the government invoked the ISA to arrest over 100 people, including politicians and activists, to curb mounting political tension due to racial provocations.
Two dailies, The Star and Sin Chew Jit Poh, also had their publishing licence suspended at the time.

Karpal: AG bound to press for suicide verdict

Teoh inquest: Dr Pornthip maintains death was not suicide (Updated)

Today, Malaysiakini reported - Court dodges clash over Teoh verdict review.

Outside court, Gobind told reporters that he had seen the notice of appearance from the AG's Chambers stating it is pursuing a verdict that Teoh had committed suicide and claimed, saying, "I have spoken to DPP NONEDzulkifli and saw the letter from the AG to that effect. I am surprised the AG wants to proceeds with this, I have seen the letter (stating) that the AG wants to push for a verdict of suicide.”

One thing is certain - Teoh's death was not suicide and he died in MACC custody.

If not suicide, then homicide? Very unlikely because MACC is not a murderer. ;)

‘Get permits for fireworks’

TANGKAK: Residents celebrating Chinese New Year in Ledang are urged to apply for police permits if they want to let off firecrackers and fireworks.
Speaking to some 20 Chinese community leaders in the district, Ledang police chief Supt Harun Idris said the “pop-pop” firecrackers which do not contain explosive materials do not need permits.
“However, those who want to celebrate the festive season with firecrackers and fireworks can apply for the permits,” he said at the Ledang police operations room on Friday.
Funny. I wonder why this short news report and why only the residents celebrating Chinese New Year (CNY) in Ledang were urged to 'get permit for fireworks'. No wonder I seemed to see and hear more firecrackers and fireworks being let off this year than last year.
Here's a video of fireworks somewhere in Puchong.

How did Dr M rule for 22 years if he did not only want to win general elections?

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has slammed Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat for desperately wanting to win the general election and not fight for Islam.

He said the PAS spiritual leader's wish was to win the general election and rule the country with DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

"Nik Aziz openly called Muslim Umno members infidels and is prepared to work with the devil which rejected the Islamic state championed by PAS.

"His support for non-Muslim views that Muslims become less Islamic is to garner support from non-Muslims for the general election.

"Priority is given to non-Muslims and not to enslave himself to Allah," he said in his blog www.chedet.co.cc Wednesday.

He urged the Kelantan menteri besar to stop abusing and misinterpreting Islam for his political end.

"Have faith in Allah and stop confusing Muslims in Malaysia just to win the general election," he added.

Dr Mahathir said contrary to claims, Nik Aziz only fought in Malaysia and not throughout the oppressed Islamic world.

He challenged Nik Aziz to ask DAP to state that the Pakatan Rakyat coalition government would ban gambling, the sale of liquor and accept hudud law.

"If DAP refuses, will PAS be willing to take on DAP or will PAS remain silent as DAP's help is important to win the general election?.

The former premier said Umno did not claim only its members were Muslims and bound for heaven although Nik Aziz labelled others as primitive.

"Muslim Umno members fight for race, religion (Islam) and country. The Umno constitution states that a person is considered a Malay if he is a Muslim.

"Nik Aziz will not include this condition as Malays are primitive and non-Muslims as they do not support PAS," he added.

Written in black and white: Attempted sodomy and attempted oral sex

Sodomy II: Dent in prosecution case

Lead defence counsel Karpal Singh managed to put a major dent into the prosecution's case in Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial in the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

The veterNONEan lawyer pointed out this morning that the pro forma form filled by doctors - mainly forensic pathologist Dr Siew Shueu Feng - who had interviewed and examined complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan on June 28, 2008, has the words 'attempted sodomy' and 'attempted oral sex'.

Former HKL Accident and Emergency Unit head Dr Khairul Nizam Hassan (left) told the court that Saiful had told the medical team that he had been sodomised and forced to perform oral sex but Saiful did not mention 'attempted' but 'sodomy' and 'oral sex'.

When shown the pro forma form, however, Khairul Nizam agreed the form states 'attempted sodomy' and 'attempted oral sex' yet he maintained that the medical examination was conducted to check for sodomy and oral sex.

NONEWhen Karpal pursued the matter, asking many times if the pro forma form was based on interviewing Saiful, the witness,
Khairul Nizam, agreed  but stressed that the form is just as a guideline.

"How can you say it is sodomy or oral sex when the report states 'attempted'?" asked Karpal and persisted with this line of questioning until Solicitor-General II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden - who is leading the prosecution team - objected to the repetition of the questions.

Karpal also pointed out that vital information that
included the circumstances that led to the alleged incident; on the complainant's medical history; and on past rectal examination as to whether or not the victim had defecated, which should have been indicated in the pro forma form had not been filled by the doctors.

MRT project: KL traffic gridlock expected - BN gov makes people suffer first!

Kuala Lumpur residents will have to brace themselves for horrific traffic conditions when the construction of the city's Mass Rail Transport (MRT) project starts this June.

The duration of the ordeal is however unclear. Reason being the environmental assessment report released on Monday by the project's consultant ERE Consulting Group does not state the project's time frame.

NONE
According to the report, the roads affected include Persiaran Surian (with a capacity of 5,300 cars per hour), the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP, 8,400 cars per hour) and Sprint Highway and Jalan Semantan (that peak at 12,6000 cars per hour) while traffic congestion is expected to be significant at the Bukit Bintang and Cochrane stations (of the proposed Sungai Buloh-Kajang line) due to movement of construction vehicles… and its surrounding land use.

Dr M: It is Pua's job to criticise. I see no wrong in the government explaining

Is RM6 billion too much to spend on warships and is Malaysia engaging in an arms race? Maybe, is the considered opinion of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"We may not be good friends with our neighbour in the South but we have no intentions of going to war. Rather than buying all sorts of weapons, it would be better to use the money on other domestic needs," he said.

Commenting on Petaling Jaya Utara parliamentarian Tony Pua's claims that the ships are overpriced, Mahathir said: "It is (Pua's) job to criticise. I see no wrong in the government explaining why the costs are too high."

Aberrations of Dr M: He would rather avoid embarrassment than keep his word

Dr M claimed that he met the opposition leaders before they were arrested under Ops Lalang in 1987. Lim Kit Siang denied there was ever a meeting.

Now, clearly, this is a case of Dr M's words against Kit Siang's word.

How to prove?

For the sake of his 'Tun-ship', let's make Mahathir the good guy.

If Tun told the truth, why did he have to force the opposition leaders - in this case, Kit Siang - to admit that they met?

In a news report, The Malaysian Insider quoted Dr M as saying:
“Well it happened over 20 years ago. I remember distinctly meeting them, I can’t remember the faces of those people. I certainly remember that Karpal (Singh) was not one of them and I think (Lim) Kit Siang is one of them...It is embarrassing for me after ensuring them that they would not be arrested but they were arrested by the police and of course I had to sign the detention order.”

There are clearly some 'aberrations' in Dr M's statements. If he did distinctly remember meeting them, how could he not remember the faces of those people? If he could not remember the faces of those 'present', how could he remember the faces of those who were 'absent'?

So, Mahathir signed the detention order out of embarrassment? How interesting! Mahathir was more concerned to avoid embarrassment than to keep his word!

Google Doodle Love: Happy Valentine's Day from Google and Robert Indiana

HKL doctor: We work without fear or favour - Can we see if you work without fear or favour? Only God knows

The sodomy trial resumes today with senior counsel Karpal Singh expected to grill Hospital Kuala Lumpur pathologist Dr Siew Sheue Feng about the medical pro-forma forms.

The pro-forma form is a standard sexual assault victim questionnaire and in this case it would be on the complainant, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, who is former political aide to Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

In the last court session, Siew provided a blank pro-forma form for the defence's reference.

Siew, had also pointedly refused to refer to the medical notes during the defence's cross-examination but he received a lot of flak after he was caught referring to it during the break.

As a result, Kuala Lumpur High Court judge justice Mohd Zabidin Mohd Diah has ordered it to be provided to the defence.

Solicitor-general II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden returns to court after having recovered from a leg fracture.

The trial has also attracted a Finish embassy representative among many other foreign observers.

LIVE REPORTS

8.29am: Sodomy complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan's father Azlan Mohd Lazim is in court at the Jalan Duta Court Complex in Kuala Lumpur.

Also sitting in the public gallery is Machang MP and PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution.

9.05am: Court called into session with High Cout justice Mohd Zabidin Mohd Diah presiding.
There is however no sign of lead defence lawyer Karpal Singh. The public gallery is quite full with about 70 people.

Sex abstinence campaign is not oppressive. Moral policing is OPPRESSIVE

February 13, 2011

SHAH ALAM, Feb 13 – Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim (pic) said today that the state sex abstinence campaign is not meant to restrict freedom, but to educate the Muslim community.

He was speaking at the third series of the ‘Anti-Zina’ campaign here, an activity under the Selangor ideal generation programme (GeMS). The programme was set up under the education, higher education and development of a model being committee, an initiative by the mentri besar to curb social ills in the state.
“I hope that although there are heated discussions on the internet that say all these are efforts to restrict freedom [it will not be viewed as that].
“If we want to be free, we have to be respected,” he said.
He admitted that the effort does not seem favourable to many, but he said it is a task, not for the popular vote, but for the sake of the Muslim community.
“This is an effort to solve a social problem, this is not an effort to restrict society’s movement. This is also an effort by Muslims to help the Muslim community, so we think that it is necessary,” he said.
“I hope people won’t say that Selangor is backdated in terms of not giving space to freedom,” he said, referring to the abstinence campaigns in the US that had been going on during the Bush administration and were heavily funded by it.
Khalid insisted that the state encourages socialising, discussions and relationships because “these are part of growing up and this will give us a chance to make ourselves better”.
“It’s not that we want to be harsh, this is for us to advise one another, to correct a humanity issue,” he insisted.
He said the programme targets the youth, as they are among those who are easily influenced to engage in activities that are against the norm and the wishes of a “religious and prudent society”.
Khalid cited a report that private employees, college students at public institutions, and high schoolers are now the main groups of people caught for being in close proximity (khalwat) by every state Islamic Religious Department in the country.
“Statistics show that on average, there are 84 babies born out of wedlock every day and that is seven births every two hours. It is estimated that more than 20,000 Malay babies who were born out of wedlock are unregistered in the country,” he added.
He emphasised that the more concerning fact is that about 470 couples have premarital or extramarital sex every day, although he did not specify the source of the data.
“We hope that with the steps taken today in Selangor, we can lessen premarital sex among the youth, and curb babies born out of wedlock and baby dumping, especially among Muslim teenagers,” he said in a press release.
Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) had launched the ‘Mind the Valentine’s Day Trap’ campaign, aimed at preventing Muslims, especially teenagers, from celebrating Valentine’s Day, which falls on February 14.
PAS Youth has also planned a similar campaign after backtracking on its earlier declaration to launch a crackdown on Muslims celebrating Valentine’s in PR states.
Its chief, Nasrudin Hasan At-Tantawi, reportedly said that the state governments in Kedah, Kelantan and Selangor had instructed local authorities to work closely with the police and Rela to check on immoral activities that day.
The movement is also working closely with the Islamic Religious Department in Penang to monitor sinful activities.
Nasrudin added that the movement would preach and distribute flyers promoting a sin-free lifestyle at lovers’ hotspots in every state.
A fatwa issued by the National Fatwa Council during its 71st conference almost six years ago stated that “the spirit of Valentine’s Day celebrations is associated with elements of Christianity and vice activities that are prohibited in Islam.”
Both the city Islamic Department (Jawi) and Selangor Islamic Department (Jais) have banned Muslims from celebrating Valentine’s Day, calling it a Christian tradition in a Friday sermon.
When asked to comment about random raids conducted by the religious departments, he said the state government had already asked them to be “very tactful” and also that their approach be “soft and more educational”.
“I think being loving is not a sin, that’s what we feel but you have to do it in a proper manner,” he said.
Khalid said that he disagreed with the raids and emphasised educating the Muslim community about such sensitive issues, instead.
