King's Confectionery: 40% discount (4-6 Dec 2009)

This 'promosi penghargaan' or 'appreciation promotion' started on 4 Dec and ended on 6 Dec. My wife knew about it from her colleague. We seized the opportunity to buy some cakes for cell refreshment. What a blessing! Thank God.

The hailer used to announce the promotion sounded horrible like the 'suratkhabar lama'!

A change of heart - By MELINYA SARAH

Read this piece written by a 16-year-old student that I know personally:

A change of heart

By MELINYA SARAH

EVERYBODY says it is nice to have a twin. You have a mate to play, study and share secrets with. Twins are practically best friends! They can go to school together, comfort each whether when either one of them is blue, plus do many more things together. Twins are cool!

Well, sadly, not for me. I have a twin brother, Alex. We have different interests and have never liked each other. Alex loves to read; he’s a bookworm or, in my language, a nerd. On the other hand, I’m a music-freak; I love to sing, play my guitar and write new songs. I even have a band of my own. Whenever we finish making new songs together, we’ll post it on You-tube.

Like I said, my brother and I dislike each other. We always quarrel over everything. From our lunch to our dinner plates, to whose turn it is to do the chores, to practically EVERYTHING! Our parents have tried many ways to make sure we don’t kill each other. I feel sorry for them.

Once, my friends came over because we’d written a song called No Clue and wanted to work on a melody for it. We jammed in my bedroom as my parents weren’t around.

Did I mention my room is big enough to fit in my bed, closet, study table, a drum set, keyboard, bass guitar, an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar?

After some hours of jamming, I thought the song was perfected. So we decided to sing it all over again to make sure everyone was satisfied before uploading it on You-tube. Well, I suppose we were quiet for a few minutes before we started singing the song all over again. That was when Alex came and started banging on my door.

“Alexia, could you please be a bit more quiet? I need peace and quiet,” he shouted from outside my door.

“That would be impossible, Alex. Relax, it’s not THAT loud,” I shouted back.

“Alexia, you know I’m older than you, so I expect you to show me a little respect, please!”

“Yeah, by only 12 seconds! Just wait for another 10 minutes or so. We’ll be done by then.”

“You’d better be, or I’ll tell mum and dad about your asking your friends to come over without telling them. Deal? I’m giving you guys another 20 minutes.”

“Deal! Uugh ... can’t you leave me alone for one whole day?”

“THAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE, ALEXIA! All right, I’ll come back after 20 minutes.”

Well, we may be different, but there is one thing that we have in common. Both of us are geniuses.

Alex studies hard, while I study smart. We can easily score straight As in exams regardless of how many subjects we take. Last year, we scored straight As for our PMR and were offered places in a full boarding school.

Our parents encouraged us to accept the offer. I wasn’t interested. But Alex had packed his belongings even before he got a place in the boarding school. I guess he knew about the school all along. Hey, we can search for things on the Internet.

So, we accompanied Alex to his new school to lend him support. At least, that was what mum said. I didn’t want to go, but she made me. She promised to take me shopping while dad and Alex hunted for the items he needed in school, right after he had registered.

After everything was done, we dropped Alex at the school gate. Mum and dad waved goodbye. I didn’t even bother to look at him. At least now he could have all time he wanted to study, while I could have all the time I wanted to write new songs and jam all day with my band buddies. Yahoo!

Three months passed but life wasn’t the same without Alex. I’d been doing everything alone; the chores and the studying. Somehow, I missed my brother.

Annoying as he could be, he had always been the one who supported me when I needed it. I was the one who had been disrespectful to him. Oh, how I regretted that.

On the first day of the first semester break, I was alone at home while mum and dad were at work. I felt a little lonely, so I picked up my guitar and started playing a song in the living room.

Just when I started singing, a taxi stopped right in front of my house. The driver came out to help his passenger with his bag. Was that Alex?

Without hesitating even a second to waste, I ran out and hugged my brother. I probably embarrassed him in front of the taxi driver for saying “I’m sorry” a million times. But I was glad he forgave me.

It’s true what they say – absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Inaugural communion

Matthew 26 (New International Version)

26While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."

27Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28This is my blood of theb]">[b] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."

Michael Jackson meets St. Peter @ Pearly Gates

Someone shared this joke at cell last night:
So Michael Jackson has died.
He went to the Pearly Gates to meet St. Peter.
St. Peter asked him, 'Who are you? Are you black or white?'
MJ answered, 'I was both "BLACK and WHITE" but I was also a "THRILLER", "BAD" and "DANGEROUS".'
St. Peter responded, "BEAT IT".'

Who is my neighbour?: Parable of the Good Samaritan

Last Friday, I asked a group of people, 'Who is my neighbor?' or 'Who is your neighbor?'

Baffled, they wondered why on earth I asked this question. After giving their answers, I explained to them, 'Your neighbor or my neighbour can be the one staying next door of our house, our colleague or classmate sitting beside us or a total stranger that crosses our path...'

Ah, after that, they knew where I was coming from...

Needless to say, my question was inspired by a parable that Jesus told. The parable is often called 'Parable of the Good Samaritan'. Basically, it is about a certain man who was traveling from Jerusalam to Jericho. On the way, he was attacked by robbers who left him naked and half dead. By chance, a priest came down that road, saw the man and avoided him. Next, a Levite came along. He too saw the man and passed him by. Finally, a Samaritan stranger saw him and stopped to help.

The full version of Jesus' parable as told in Luke 10:25-37 (taken from BibleGateway.com):
25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?
27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’h]">[h] and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’i]">[i]
28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”
29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, when he departed,j]">[j] he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”
37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Superman Returns: Cell movie night - "The Sun of Righteousness" by C.H. SPURGEON

Last night was cell movie night.

We watched 'Superman Returns'.

I watched 'Superman' in the cinema with my family when I was still a kid. Scenes of farm boy Clark Kent running and catching up with the train and carrying big objects impressed me then.

In 'Superman Returns', the scene that struck me the most was Superman returning to the sun for strength. It reminded me to return to the Sun of Righteousness for strength and healing.
Malachi 4:2
But unto you that fear my name, shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves in the stall.

Raising Helen (2004)

Cell had Movie Night.

Even though it is an 'old' film, it is worth watching.

Plot taken from Wikipedia:
Raising Helen revolves around Helen Harris, whose successful fashion career and decent Manhattan lifestyle are plenty in terms of keeping her occupied and content. Helen's days as a socialite are brought to a swift end, however, when she is informed not only of the death of her sister, but of the decision to leave her three children in her care. Being one of New York's hippest matters little to 15-year-old Audrey, 10-year-old Henry, and five-year-old Sarah, who would much rather have their parents back. Convinced she can raise the kids and maintain her already fast-paced schedule, Helen quickly finds herself burnt out and disheartened by her older sister's lack of faith. Despite her already hectic schedule, however, Helen finds the time to develop a genuine affection for her new dependents, as well as an equally genuine attraction to Dan Parker, the kids' school principal and local Lutheran pastor. Eventually Helen realizes she can't balance the two lives, and is faced with a difficult decision: Does she live her old dreams and party when she has the chance or take a chance on a new one?

Four themes found in the film:
1. Success
2. Loss of a loved one
3. Hope
4. Family

WHAT IS A PIG'S FAVOURITE KARATE MOVE?

'Off tangent' awhile. Too much politics nowadays.

...

In cell, a kid asked me, 'What is a pig's favourite karate move?'

I answered, saying, 'Waaa chaa!' and did a karate flick with my hands.

'Is it?' I asked him.

He said, 'No. It's PORK CHOP!'

Turning the Wheel of Fortune into the Will of Fortune

Chinese New Year hasn't ended. So, I would like to reproduce here a sermon that my pastor preached. I enjoyed sharing it with the cell last night.

Introduction
Chinese philosophy of life can be represented by 3 Chinese characters:
1.) Fu - Blessing, Good Fortune, Good Luck

2.) Lu - Prosperity

3.) Shou - Longevity

But the Christian view of life is based on the word of God

1. Our Future is determined by the Will of God
- Fu
- Chinese have a strong belief in luck, astrology and feng shui
- They believe that if they offend certain spirits or break certain taboos then bad luck will befall them
- Christian perspective - Our future is determined by the will of God
- God's plan for us is for good and not for evil (Jeremiah 29:11)
- Occult practices are evil in God's eyes (Deuteronomy 18:9-12)

2. Prosperity follow after God's people
- Lu
- Prosperity is not determined by the spirits, stars and cultural taboos
- Prosperity is a product of our relationship with God
- When we are in relationship with the Father, the word of God changes our thinking, mindsets making us more capable and wise to achieve success and wealth
- Joshua 1:8
- For Christians, we don't run after prosperity. Rather, prosperity follows after us

3. Turning the wish of long life into a promise
- Shou
- The Chinese worship ancestors so that they have long life
- Exodus 20:12 - a commandment with a promise - "Honor your father and your mother and you will live long"
- We are living in the days where people want to live a long life and pay a lot for it
- But the answer is not in therapies and surgery but in honoring your father and mother
- Honor them while they are still alive and not when they are dead (Chinese ancestor worship)
- We should live a lifestyle of honoring our parents throughout their lives

Fish roe

A "RM 7" fish roe.

I didn't know what 'fish roe' was and had not eaten one until last night. My friend cooked curry fish head and added a few fish roes in.
He told me that fish roes were sold at Indian restaurant and a fish roe could cost up to RM7. Well, as far as I could remember, I hadn't eaten one in my life, I told my friend.

Go Genting YAY

Thank God for a terrific trip yesterday, Saturday. It was planned the night before. Yeah, impromptu.

The five of us, B-A-O (hehe), MJ and I went there. Victory wanted to come along but he just couldn't (Thanks Vic for bringing the B-A-O to my house. Wish you could have joined us). We did some 'siao' stuff but nothing extreme. Hehe...

MJ had her 'My Biggest Pride' moment, Brenda her 'high' moment (literally!), Amanda her 'poser' moment, Olivia her 'go-go-go' moment and me, just my 'happy' moment. 8=)

As Brenda put it, yesterday was our friendship 'anniversary'. 8D

Taiwanese Steamboat @ Tian Xiang Restaurant

Birthday Girl, MJ
Birthday boy, Andrew
The herbal spiced-up soup
William, the gentle giant
Amanda, the poser. Brenda, the duckie.

Six of us (Amanda, Andrew, Brenda, William, MJ and I) had Taiwanese steamboat dinner last Sunday at Tian Xiang Restaurant at 318, Jalan Pudu.

Andrew, being the 'regular' there, recommended the restaurant. Moreover, he had some vouchers to 'dispose of' though he wanted to 'cash back'. *Joshua shaking his head*

Anyway, the purpose was to fellowship and to celebrate Andrew's and MJ's b-day.

To me, the food was not bad but the service so-so. Reason being there was this lady (perhaps in her 50s) who kept promoting and trying to make us buy vouchers. She came to our table before, during and after dinner for at least 10 times, each time trying to convince us to buy.
Cost per head: RM50. According to Andrew, you need to be ready to pay that amount when dining there. I think RM50 is for a decent meal. Right, Andrew?
