PETALING JAYA, July 17 — The “RM1 for Water Rights: 100,000 Malaysians Support Tony Pua vs Syabas” online campaign in support of DAP federal lawmaker Tony Pua has announced that they have managed to collect more than RM150,000 from their online campaign.

“By the end of the online campaign, we have managed to collect RM150,939,” said the campaign’s organiser, Yeo Bee Yin tonight.

When he took to the stage, Pua stated the overall total collected by the campaign, inclusive of the dinner and the rounds done by DAP volunteers with donation boxes.

“And so, I would like to announce the total amounts of the campaign. As announced earlier by Bee Yin, we managed to collect RM151,000. The dinner has managed to collect RM173,000. And the donation has managed to collect RM22,400. This is an overall total of RM310,000,” he announced.

The amount collected is RM110,000 more than the sum Pua has been ordered to pay in damages to Syabas.

The excess has been pledged by Pua to the DAP General Election Fund.

Last month, Syabas won a defamation suit against the DAP national publicity secretary, who was ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court to pay RM200,000 in damages besides costs and interests.

The opposition party had started an online campaign to raise RM100,000 to help the federal lawmaker pay the amount by July 16, but the financial support from the public was beyond expectation, organisers have said.

The cause to aid the MP had instead managed to collect RM143,256 by July 16 from tens of thousands of Malaysians in a one-week period.

Following his father's recent criticism against the former Perak MB, Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim said he felt saddened that a slew of criticism made against the royalty were committed by Malays.

Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, in a Twitter posting yesterday, expressed his sadness and regret that a slew of criticisms made against the royalty were committed by Malays, saying, “I feel saddened and regretful. Why are the Malays the only ones are trying to overthrow the royalty?”

Also, he asked why other races did not waste time making critical statements on the rulers and were more focused on succeeding in life.

The 28-year-old prince also implied that Malays would be sidelined should Malaysia do away with royalty, saying, "I would like to see what will happen to the Malays if our beloved country becomes like Singapore. If there is hardship, don't be busy looking for a king then."

He ended the five-line posting by urging people to stop daydreaming and learn to appreciate what they had.

The prince's tweet came days after his father, Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar (right) expressed unhappiness over former Perak menteri besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin's recent criticism on the ruler's RM520,000 purchase of the WWW1 car number plate. 

The world and its systems have changed - politically, economically etc. I'm sure the Johor Crown Prince knows that very well. Otherwise, he won't be Twitter-ing to his subjects.

Maybe Johor Crown Prince has forgotten that the person who started the 'Daulat Rakyat' movement is also famous for his 'Melayu mudah lupa' statement.

JUNE 1 — Remember this, Malaysians: We only fear God.

We don’t fear politicians and we have no reason to be cowed by the royalty.

There is no punishment that can be worse than eternal damnation. Not jail. Not a hefty fine. Not even condemnation in the media.

I am stating this point in the wake of the court decision to fine Chan Hon Keong RM50,000 and sentence him to a year’s jail for some unfavourable comments made about the Perak Sultan during the power grab in the state three years ago.

The conviction and sentence is intended to be a deterrent, to stop the public from making comments online about the powerful. But it should not stop us from keeping those in power honest.

What happened in Perak was a travesty, a day in which Umno used its power and abused institutions to usurp power from the legitimate holders. There was a lot of anger and people vented their frustration, mostly online.

The authorities were shocked at the outpouring of anger and went in search of someone to make an example of. Sadly, Chan was that example.

We should raise funds to pay the fine for this man as a show of solidarity. After all, if we don’t stand up for each other, who is going to do so?

In the meantime, expect the mainstream media to use this case to scare us into submission. But like I said, total submission and obedience is only reserved for the Almighty.

Humans, no matter how lofty their positions, are never to be feared.

They may fine us, jail us, teargas us and even abduct us. But we won’t fear them.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — Johor’s Tengku Mahkota Tunku Ismail Idris took to Twitter last night to defend his father’s RM520,000 purchase of the coveted WWW 1 vehicle number plate, saying the royal family has never used public money for personal spending.

“JOHOR Royal Family does Not take any Money from the Government. Since the time of Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim. Feel free to ask the MB or any Government officials.

“The Money allocated to My Father and I every month as a Sultan and Tunku Mahkota is put into Yayasan Iskandar and Yayasan Ibrahim. The purpose of these foundations (Yayasan Iskandar and Yayasan Ibrahim) is for the Rakyat and to assist the Johor State Government.

“I my self, since the time I was the Raja Muda, Never took 1 cent from the Government till this very Day. Its my Rakyat’s Money. So before You Open your mouth. Do your research,” the Johor crown prince posted on his Twitter account @HRHJohor2 in reply to criticism from the former Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.

The royal family’s spending habits came under the spotlight after the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail Sultan Iskandar, was revealed as the person who beat some 10,000 bidders, including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, to win the tender yesterday.

The amount beat the record set by the number plate MCA 1 in 2010 for RM300,100.

Mohammad Nizar had tweeted yesterday that the Johor Sultan could have used the half a million ringgit instead to help the state’s poor Malays buy homes.

“RM520k bolih dibelanjakan membantu rakyat melayu Johor yg masih ramai miskin serta memerlukan bantuan utk kprluan hidup, bina 20 rumah PPRT!” (RM520,000 can be spent on poor Malays in Johor who need help to survive, and build 20 PPRT (Program Pembangunan Rakyat Termiskin) homes!” the PAS leader said last night on his account @mbnizar.

The Johor royal household is no stranger to controversy.

Earlier this month, four expatriates alleged they were assaulted by royal bodyguards while holidaying on the resort island of Rawa, off the southern state’s coast.

It was the second such reported assault in seven years.

In 2005, six men, said to be from the Johor royal family, were reported to have gatecrashed a Brazilian couple’s wedding on the same island and beat up the guests with golf clubs and sharp objects.

Peaceful assembly without Peaceful Assembly Bill!

Approximately 400 people gathered at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) Park this afternoon to protest against the Peaceful Assembly Bill, with police keeping watch from across the fountain without interfering while about ten park security personnel roved the periphery of the lively crowd and a man identifying himself as a security supervisor disrupted any attempts at speeches, slogans and press conferences.

In response to the supervisor’s interruptions, Wong Chin Huat (right, in yellow), who is one of three organisers, cheekily dispersed the gathering into "private gatherings", and referred to the 2pm event as a picnic rather than a protest.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Wong said the point was to illustrate that public assemblies are banal, everyday occurrences and asked, "Why the moment you think about the country, it becomes illegal? What's wrong with being patriotic?"

Another organiser Maria Chin Abdullah said that it was not enough to amend the bill but that it should be dropped completely when asked about the cabinet's announcement today that the bill would be reviewed.

MELBOURNE, Oct 26 — Bersih 2.0 will hold Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to the civic movement’s eight demands on elections and governance should the opposition pact come into government, chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said at a public forum here yesterday.

“Not only Pakatan,” Ambiga said of her movement that transcends party politics. “We will hold all parties accountable. That’s the way it should be. The power is with us (the people), not with them (political parties). It’s only when power is in the hands of the citizenry that we have a working democracy.”

Ambiga was responding to a question at a public lecture at the Asian Law Centre, University of Melbourne, to kick off a speaking tour of four of the most renowned law schools in Australia.

On Friday she shares Bersih 2.0 stories with Malaysians at a solidarity evening organised by Bersih 2.0 Australia and the Melbourne chapter of Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia Australia (SABMoz).

Ambiga speaks at the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney on October 31, and the College of Law at the Australian National University in Canberra on November 1, at each stop encouraging Malaysians to register as voters.

At the lecture in Melbourne, Malaysia’s Consulate-General in Melbourne, Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, told the audience that foreign missions such as his had started to put in place processes to register voters.

“We registered 26 voters (last night),” said David Teoh, co-ordinator for Bersih 2.0 Australia and SABMoz Melbourne.

More than 300 mostly young Malaysians filled a lecture theatre at the Asian Law Centre for the lecture hosted by Dean of Law Professor Carolyn Evans.

In her talk on electoral reform and the quest for democracy in Malaysia, Ambiga spoke on the significance of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights to which Malaysia is a signatory.

She recounted events leading up to Bersih’s rally on July 9, the implications of the rally, and considered whether the government’s subsequent undertaking to amend or repeal laws such as the Internal Security Act might offer hope for a more democratic Malaysia.

She drew attention to the aspirations of youth, lamenting the “disconnect” of old politics with new technology, a yellow pashmina draped around her neck, and sporting a “CleanBefore13” lapel badge. As Ambiga was speaking, Global Bersih was following events on microblogging service Twitter, using the #CleanBefore13 hashtag.

Moderator Professor Tim Lindsey, director of the Asian Law Centre, had to apologise for not being able to accommodate all those who had questions for Ambiga, almost all of them from Malaysians studying or living in Melbourne, who make up the highest number of Malaysians in Australia.

Ambiga was overwhelmed by the response. “As I said (in her talk), the future is with the youth,” she told The Malaysian Insider. “Never have they been so interested in an election.

“Look at the quality of the questions. That says it all.”

In the audience were Jufitri Joha and Farhana Halim, two Malaysians in Australia for a Young Muslims leadership programme organised by the Centre for Dialogue at La Trobe University in Melbourne.

Jufitri and Farhana were disappointed at the low participation among Malays.

Both were disappointed there were not more Malays at the forum. “It is important to inculcate a culture of intellectual debate,” said Jufitri, vice-president international of Abim.

“It is the essence of Malaysia,” said Lawyers for Liberty advocate Farhana of the national conversation on the way forward for Malaysia. “Regardless of whether you support or not support (Bersih).

“If you do not support, it is an opportunity to question her.”

Farhana was overwhelmed by the crowd. “We underestimate the power of Malaysian Chinese involvement in the national movement... the Chinese sense of patriotism is the very opposite,” she said of what she discovered speaking to those among the overwhelmingly Chinese audience.

Ambiga’s lecture would have been an eye opener for Australians, going by Lindsey’s observation.

“Australians see the region as a bad news story — of the horror of Australians caught up in the violence, and in natural disasters,” said Lindsey, a scholar on Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia; he is also director of the Centre for Islamic Law and Society at the University of Melbourne.

“They are unaware of the debates on democracy going on... Out of the bad news (government reaction to Bersih) has come a good news face.”

It was important for Australians to be aware of changes in the region, Lindsey told The Malaysian Insider, and for government and politicians to stop conducting foreign policy “in reaction to domestic issues”.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — Musician Pete Teo denied today that his “Undilah” video mocked the prime minister and called for critics to explain how “Star Wars is an insult” to Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

A Barisan Nasional (BN) lawmaker said yesterday a scene where a man dressed as Star Wars’ character “Jabba the Hutt” and standing next to a poster of Najib at a bus stop, mocked the prime minister.

But Teo, who produced the public service announcement (PSA), insisted that “there is nothing wrong with a Star Wars character standing next to Najib.”

“It’s just a zany thing I do in all my videos. Does this mean that other people sitting at the bus stop are also mocking the PM? I’d like them to explain to me how it insults him,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

He pointed out that he had pears randomly appearing in previous videos he produced.

When quizzed over Jabba the Hutt’s role as a villain in the Star Wars films, Teo merely replied, “I don’t see the connection. It’s just a Star Wars character in a bus stop.”

He said this despite insisting that “it was crucial that the video is not political. We were neurotic about this.”

Teo also dismissed accusations that other scenes contained anti-BN messages, saying that even “the prime minister has admitted the country has problems.”

“What is the premise of Najib’s Economic and Government Transformation Programmes? It is an admission that there are problems and it is part of the PM’s agenda to solve them,” Teo said.

The PSA opens with Umno’s Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah describing Malaysia as a country with “many problems.”

His colleague Datuk Abdul Abdul Rahman said that the Kelantan prince — who is known to be openly critical of his party — appeared to encourage Malaysians to fight the establishment.

The Kota Belud MP also pointed out other instances where the 4.38-minute clip appeared to ridicule BN such as a man browsing through a copy of Harakah, a PAS organ, with headlines that read, “BN tiru Buku Jingga” (BN copied Buku Jingga).

Abdul Rahman added that there is a snapshot of the Tung Shin Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, which was the centre of much controversy during the uproar over claims of police brutality at the Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9.

The Malaysian Insider reported last week that the clip was taken off the air by local broadcasters despite a push for greater democracy because it contains opposition figures and Tengku Razaleigh’s speech.

But the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) later claimed that its decision to temporarily pull the “Undilah” video was because it has not yet been approved by the Film Censorship Board.

Najib had pledged to repeal several security laws including the Internal Security Act (ISA) and do away with annual publishing licences in his Malaysia Day address.

He said this was because Malaysians had matured and deserved greater freedom as the “days of government knows best” had ended.

The truth is out, isn't it? Before Malaysians matured or when they were generally still ignorant, the Umno-led government continued to 'cheat' the people. Now, after 308, we understand the meaning of democracy so much more. The people are not ignorant anymore. The people know they are the boss!

Democracy comes from two Greek words: demos, meaning "the people," and kratos, meaning "to rule". Hence, the people rule!

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — Celebrities have been used to sell everything from shampoos to airline tickets. In fact, in the United States, they even go on the stump for their favourite election candidates.

In what looks like a game of catch-up or political awakening, Malaysian artistes and film-makers are adding their voices to viral campaigns aimed at strengthening civil society in Malaysia.

Working with shoestring budgets and bolstered by the goodwill of volunteers, these direct-to-public initiatives harness the power of social media and the Internet to carry their message of empowerment to a new generation of hyper-connected voters.

In other words, they are reaching out to the youth of this country.

One such effort is “Undilah”, helmed by singer/songwriter Pete Teo, which aims to hammer home the point that every vote counts and that the government is ultimately responsible to the people.

“This is my country. Stop shitting on the sidewalk. It’s that sense of ownership that we need to inculcate,” Teo told The Malaysian Insider.

“Ultimately, this bunch of people who sit in Parliament... they work for us. We don’t work for them. Their salaries are paid by taxpayers. And once every four to five years, we decide whether they go back to Parliament again.”

Malaysians who gripe about the state of the nation should not just pin their hopes on “heroes” like Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim or even former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to right perceived wrongs without first making their wishes known through the ballot box, Teo stressed.

The trailer for “Undilah” is already out; against a funky rap song and lyrics that go, “Undilah, jangan tidur” you see — yes, all in one video — singer Namewee, actor/director Afdlin Shauki, actress Sharifah Amani, politicians like MCA’s Wee Ka Siong and PKR’s Nurul Izzah and even AirAsia’s Tan Sri Tony Fernandes exhorting you to get out there to vote.

Bersih 2.0: Coalitions need not be registered

Bersih 2.0 said that it is not an "illegal organisation" as decreed by Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein on Saturday and that the coalition was not an unlawful entity.

Aat a press conference at the Bersih 2.0 secretariat headquarters in Petaling Jaya today, its steering committee member Subramniam Pillay said  that while he agreed with the home ministry that it was an unregistered organisation, Bersih 2.0 was not legally required to be formally registered.

 

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein (right) last week declared Bersih 2.0 an illegal organisation, on grounds that it was operating without permission of the Registrar of Societies - hence,  the arrest of several opposition politicians and activists who supported Bersih 2.0 and its scheduled rally on July 9.

Subramaniam said there was no basis for Hishammuddin's claim, as coalitions were not required to register unless they intended to become permanent entities and explained further, saying, "Coalitions come together for a cause, and once the objectives of the cause are achieved they are dissolved."

Manakala semasa Pilihanraya Umum ke-12 pada 2008, masa kempen 8 hari sahaja. 5. Akses media yang bebas dan adil • RTM dan Bernama adalah agensi media yang dibiayai oleh kerajaan. Mereka sepatutnya memberi liputan yang seimbang dan adil untuk semua parti yang bertanding. • Parti politik harus dibenarkan untuk membuat pengiklanan tanpa sebarang diskriminasi dan penapisan. • Ini adalah mengenai keadilan! Semua media perlu memberikan hak untuk semua parti membalas kepada tuduhan-tuduhan negatif terhadap mereka. 6. Kukuhkan institusi awam Institusi awam dan kakitangan kerajaan harus tidak berat sebelah dan menegakkan undang-undang dan demokrasi. Institusi awam harus direformasikan supaya bertindak secara bebas, menegakkan undang-undang dan melindungi hak asasi manusia. Contohnya : Suruhanjaya Pilihanraya (SPR) hendaklah memastikan pilihanraya yang bebas dan adil. Badan Kehakiman harus memelihara kebebasannya dan menegakkan kedaulatan undang-undang tanpa gentar atau memihak. Peguam Negara perlu bertindak secara tidak berat sebelah dan mengutamakan kepentingan rakyat. Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia harus bertindak dengan adil dan menghentikan pendakwaan selektif dan penyalahgunaan kuasa. Polis Di Raja Malaysia perlu bertindak secara profesional dalam melaksanakan tugas dan menegakkan kedaulatan undang-undang. 7. Hentikan rasuah Rasuah adalah kegiatan mencuri dari rakyat untuk kepentingan peribadi. Rasuah menyebabkan orang kaya bertambah kaya dan golongan miskin semakin miskin. Pembelian undi harus dihentikan! Akta Kesalahan Pilihanraya 1954 mesti dikuatkuasakan. 8. Hentikan politik kotor BERSIH 2.0 menuntut SEMUA parti politik untuk menghentikan politik kotor. Tuntutan ini adalah kesinambungan Bersih pertama yang dibuat menjelang pilihan raya ke 12 lalu. Berikut adalah kenyataan penuh baguida. TEKS PENUH KENYATAAN YANG DIPERTUAN AGUNG Beta sedang mengikuti dengan teliti akan perkembangan cadangan Kumpulan Bersih untuk mengadakan perarakan dan perhimpunan beramai-ramai yang bertujuan untuk menyerahkan memorandum kepada Beta selaku Yang di-Pertuan Agong, dan bagaimana pihak kerajaan menangani isu ini khususnya agensi-agensi dan jabatan-jabatan yang terlibat. Namun Beta yakin kepimpinan negara di bawah Yang Amat Berhormat Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak berkemampuan untuk menangani masalah ini dengan sebaik mungkin. Beta menyeru di dalam keghairahan sebahagian rakyat berpolitik bagi menyuburkan demokrasi dalam negara kita ini hendaklah dipastikan juga bahawa tuntutan demokrasi itu tidak akan membawa kemusnahan kepada negara. Kita tidak boleh terlalu terikut-ikut dengan amalan-amalan negara-negara luar secara umumnya kerana keharmonian dan kestabilan negara adalah asas penting bagi sesebuah negara yang perlu semua pihak pertahankan. Beta juga menyeru kepada pihak kerajaan agar melaksanakan segala amanah yang diberikan kepada rakyat secara adil dan bijaksana dan yang pentingnya Beta selaku Yang di-Pertuan Agong tidak mahu melihat dalam negara bermasyarakat majmuk ini berada di dalam keadaan bermusuhan sesama sendiri ataupun sebahagian rakyatnya bermusuh dengan kerajaan atas apa jua alasan pun. Setiap permasalahan yang timbul, kita sebagai masyarakat bertamadun hendaklah menyelesaikan secara rundingan dan tidak mengikut perasaan seperti pepatah Melayu "Yang Dikejar Tak Dapat Yang Dikendong Berciciran". Hakikatnya demonstrasi jalanan banyak membawa keburukan daripada kebaikan walaupun niat asalnya baik. Sebaliknya kita harus menumpukan kepada matlamat utama memajukan negara, bukannya mencipta masalah yang membuat negara berada terkebelakang. Ingatlah bumi mana yang tidak ditimpa hujan, lautan mana yang tidak bergelora. Itulah pentingnya sifat kesederhanan dan tolak ansur yang telah begitu lama diamalkan oleh warisan pentadbiran negara.

MCCBCHST: PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY IS A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT

The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) notes that Bersih Organisers, Perkasa and Umno Youth are intending to hold peaceful assemblies on 9 July 2011.

MCCBCHST is of the view that since our federal constitution, the supreme law of our land provides under Article 10(1b) that "all citizens have the right to assemble peaceably and without arms", the proposed assemblies by the said groups should be allowed.

Further, one of the pillars of our Rukun Negara is "Keluhuran Perlembagaan". i.e. Supremacy of the Constitution.

Even the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has stated that the people have the constitutional right to assemble peaceably and the government should allow it.

Any pre-emptive banning of proposed peaceful assemblies would mean that one has no right to peaceful assembly, making the fundamental guarantee illusory.

The police have the duty and the capacity to control such assemblies and can designate routes and separate the different groups as has been done during the recent by-elections.

The fact that such assemblies may cause traffic jams and inconvenience the people is not a legitimate reason.

People generally are prepared to put up with some inconveniences in furtherance of their fundamental rights.

Many national and religious functions and processions are held on regular basis and Malaysians have accepted these inconveniences as part and parcel of the heritage of our Malaysian Society.

MCCBCHST therefore appeal to the police to act professionally in the matter and allow people to exercise their fundamental right to peaceful assembly.

The police can call the groups concerned and make arrangements on the route each may take. On the day itself police should be there to separate the groups and to control the traffic.

The MCCBCHST calls upon all concerned citizens of Malaysia to earnestly pray that all parties concerned will conduct themselves with decorum and respect, as we approach the day of the proposed peaceful assembly.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — Bersih 2.0 welcomes the Election Commission’s (EC) offer to discuss electoral reforms but said it was too late for talks due to blatant abuses in polls and government disinterest for reforms.

The election watchdog cited the EC’s admission it lacked the authority to act on blatant power abuses reported during the Sarawak polls as well as Putrajaya’s seeming disregard towards reform ideas proposed as reasons it was rejecting the invitation.

“We thank the EC for the invitation but the time for talk and discussion has passed,” Bersih chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said in a statement last night.

“This is due to the recent reports of blatant abuses in the recent Sarawak election and in view of the impending general elections,” she added.

The former Malaysian Bar president noted the EC has suggested certain reform measures in postal votes, but said the ideas do not go far enough.

She told The Malaysian Insider the ideas themselves must also be tabled in Parliament to take effect.

She urged the EC to reveal in the public’s interests, the reform ideas they have suggested to the Najib administration, which have been shot down.

Ambiga also rapped the election body for what she insisted were “baseless” comments on Bersih’s independence, adding the remarks did not reflect well on the EC, which is “constitutionally required to be above partisan politics”.

“It should not matter to them where the suggestions for reform come from, whether it is from the government, the opposition, NGOs or any citizen. They should deal with all suggestions on their merits,” she stressed.

The EC yesterday offered to meet Bersih and discuss the election watchdog’s eight demands, including having free and fair elections, on condition the group calls off a planned march this July 9.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof also said that Bersih’s protest would only prove fruitless as their demands could only be met through amendments to the relevant laws.

“We can discuss on that condition (that the rally is called off), but if they (Bersih) want to hold the illegal street demonstration and meet us just as a rubber stamp or an excuse, it is meaningless,” he told reporters.

Umno Youth and Malay rights group Perkasa have also vowed to hold demonstrations against Bersih on the same day if the elections watchdog group carries out its promise to protest.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he would ask Bersih to stop their plans if the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government agreed to reforms. But Bersih officials say it is not up to politicians to decide the rally’s fate.
