Malaysians love to shop online during office hours - thanks to 11street.my?

Admittedly, shopping online at 11 AM was my guilty pleasure during office hours (obviously!) throughout last year - thanks to 11street.my! On weekdays, two to three minutes before 11 AM, I would take my mobile phone, launch the 11street app and get ready to click  the 'Download' button to get the coveted coupon that gave 20% discount.

While I had enjoyed getting discounts shopping online, I got some great deals and some not-so-great deals. Great because some stuff were cheaper. Not-so-great because some stuff were still more expensive after discount. Once, I bought boxes of Premier facial tissues at a discount via 11street app. Later, I found out that Tesco was selling the same boxes of Premier facial tissues at a much cheaper price!

One sales gimmick that online shopping sites often use is to mark up the Retail Selling Price as high as possible and slash it to the lowest possible - hence, the 'big' discount. Do not fall for it. Always compare price even after discount given. This is one advice that I can give to you if you think that buying online is always cheaper than buying offline.

Discrimination at McDonald's Mid Valley LG Floor?!

Discrimination at McDonald's

Wednesday, 15 August 2012 admin-s

"You Chinese, kan? Tak boleh,"
Lee Yan Lin
On the 9 August 2012, Thursday, I had my dinner at McDonald's at Mid Valley (the one on LG floor, not the one opposite cinema). I went there slightly over 6pm, as the dinner value meals only starts at 6pm. I ordered the "Coca-cola Glass Meal", and as it comes with an ice-cream (sundae), I requested to collect the ice-cream after meal. The lady who was serving me consulted another Malay (I purposely mention her race here; it is pertinent to my case) lady whom I assume to be either the manager or supervisor. To my utter horror, the second lady turned to me and said, "You Chinese, kan? Tak boleh,". I was dumbfounded. All I had asked for was to collect the ice-cream a little later, so what did me being Chinese had to do with anything? It wasn't my first time making such request; other McDonald's outlets I'd been to were perfectly fine with it.
I understand that it was a peak hour. I also understand that because of it, they wanted to reserve the privilege of "double-service" to the Muslims who are fasting. But what I absolutely cannot fathom is why was my race being brought into question? If she had told me something along the line of "I'm sorry, you cannot collect it later because it's peak hour", I am sure I would have had a pleasant dinner instead of having to chew my burger in disgust. What's even funnier is that just a few days ago, the whole nation was said to be united when Dato' Lee claimed Malaysia's first Olympic medal. Now, I'm being discriminated at a fast food outlet simply because I'm not a Muslim and I don't fast.

And here's the 2nd issue. The lady who was originally serving me gave me a black glass when she was filling up my tray. There's nothing wrong with the glass, ONLY that the one on offer this week (the week ending yesterday) was the RED glass; the black one was offered more than a month ago. When I asked her why the black glass instead of the red, she smiled at me and said, "Oh, you nak yang merah ke??". I'm sorry, but the signboard clearly said the RED one was the one given out this week. Did she think that because I was a child (I have a small frame, but I'm 21 for goodness sake) I am stupid enough to be an easy prey for her to get rid of old stocks? I really don't know.

I sincerely hope that the McDonald's management will look into this matter. If they cannot ensure their employees' work ethics, I do not see how they can continue to operate in a multiracial society like Malaysia.

I wonder if the writer did take note of the names of the lady worker at the counter and her Malay manager. If she did, then the McDonald's management can easily launch an investigation into the conduct of these two employees of McDonald's Mid Valley on LG floor.

Kalau mau makan, sendiri makan, babi! KFC baru?!

This picture is going viral in Facebook.

While I agree with the victim who said stop fanning racial flames, I am against the reaction of the employee of the KFC i-City.

A 'famous' fast food establishment such as KFC should always remember the old adage “the customer is king”.

Whether or not the victim provoked attack, as long as you attacked someone, you have committed a crime.

Groupon SnoWalk@i-City: Our first time experience

My family bought our first Groupon:
The deal that we bought:

I must say Groupon Customer Support is quite prompt in responding to customer queries via support@groupon.my.

I emailed an enquiry on Fri, Dec 30, 2011 at 2:27 PM. Immediately, there was an email auto-responser from Groupon with the subject 'We got your request, and will be in touch very soon! (ticket #9xxxx)'. The official reply to my email enquiry only came at at 11:04 PM on the same day.

Not bad.

After our visit to i-City, I emailed again on Mon, Jan 9, 2012 at 12:38 AM, requesting for explainations with regards to my experience using Groupon @ i-City.

Here's the content of the email:

Hi,

My wife and kid just finished our Snowalk and 1 outdoor ride.

Would like to have answers to the following questions:
1. We redeemed our Groupon for 1 ticket for the 2-tier ride and another 3 tickets for outdoor rides. When we went to the ticket counter at ferris wheel, we were told that each of the 3 tickets were for one person each - hence we could use it for myself, my wife and kid. Is it supposed to be that way? (We didn't use the 2-tier ride ticket)

2. If let's say just my wife and I, by right, with the 1 ticket for the 2-tier ride and another 3 tickets for outdoor rides, then both of us could go on all the 4 rides - is that correct?

I hope you can clarify.

Thanks.

A week went by. No response from Groupon. I emailed again on Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 10:23 AM with the following content:

Hi Support,

Do you have a policy not to entertain questions from customers after the deal is done?

At least, have the courtesy to reply my email. I just want answers to my questions.

Regards,
Joshua

Fifteen minutes later, I got this email from Groupon:
Slim, Jan-17 10:38 am (MYT):
Hi Joshua,
My colleague Athiesh did reply your request #9xxxx It may have gone to your Spam/Junk folder.
As for your question.
If you and your wife went as a couple then yes you would have been able to redeem the coupon to ride all 4 rides.
Please let me know if I can be of any more assistance.
Regards,
Slim
My reply to Slim on  Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 10:53 AM:
Slim,

Thanks for your reply.

Just checked my Spam/Junk, no email from your colleague Athiesh.

I think Groupon should've communicated clearly to the i-City people especially those manning the ticket counters. This man at the ferris wheel ticket counter in particular, misunderstood the groupon promo. He told me 1 coupon per person. So, I gave him the three coupons - one each for my son, my wife and I.

Well, it was a good thing that we only wanted to ride the ferris wheel for if we wanted to ride all the 4 rides, I think we wouldn't be able to do so after the ferris wheel ride.

The last email reply from Slim of Groupon:
Slim, Jan-17 01:30 pm (MYT):Hi Joshua,
We usually deal with the manager or head of operations after the deal has launched.
We will notify him on your encounter and let him know.
Thank you for your feedback.
And continue enjoying your Groupons!
Also in the future please do not hesitate to contact us for anything! :)
Regards,
Slim

RM1 for a glass of water at Purple Cane Restaurant

Yesterday, we had our dinner at one of the Purple Cane restaurants in Klang Valley.

We were surprised that we were charged RM1 for a glass of water after paying the bill.

All of us agreed that RM1 for a glass of water was atrocious. After all, it was neither distilled water nor RO water but it was just plain boiled water!

Hence, as a family, we decided that we would no longer order water if we were to dine at Purple Cane.

Do you know what other restaurants that charge RM1 for a glass of water?

I'm sure Purple Cane is not the only one.

Goodbye Gardenia. Hello Massimo. I 'anti-Gardenia'

Hehe, ok. Since the Gardenia vs Massimo is still a 'hot' topic, I shall blog about it.

Like I said right from the start, I already started consuming Massimo when it first entered the market without knowing anything about this 'Umno-linked' Gardenia.

Yes, Massimo is the better (and cheaper!) bread.

I wonder why people still want to talk about this race thing.
The fact is more consumers buy Massimo for purely 'economic reasons'.

FYI, I'm still buying the Massimo wheat germ loaf for only RM2.00. ;)

2012: Out with SE Xperia, in with my HTC Desire S!

Got my free phone this month from Maxis One Club.

It's HTC Desire S with Android Version 2.3.3. The best part about the version of this Android is the 'App-2-SD' feature - that is, transfer of apps from phone to SD Card.

My ex-phone SE Xperia X10 mini  had Android Version 2.1-update1. Obviously, the only 'hang-up' I had with this phone was there was no 'App-2-SD' feature. The sadest part was when SE officially announced that there would be no upgrade to 2.2 - hence, no support for 'App-2-SD' feature.

Now, I'm a satisfied smartphone owner.

I buy Massimo, cheap and nice. Gardenia is pricey!

Earlier, I blogged that my family has already consumed Massimo as soon as it entered the market, not knowing anything about the 'Umno-linked' Gardenia.

In fact, my family has not consumed Gardenia for a long, long time. Before Massimo, it was another cheaper (though not necessarily nicer) bread than Gardenia. ;) Now that there is Massimo, the cheaper and better bread, consuming it makes sense, even more so when I know about the 'Umno-linked' Gardenia. ;)

Finally, Gardenia takes out ads to deny crony, racist claims. What a waste of money! Just reduce the price and let Malaysians enjoy eating Gardenia. That way, you will 'kill' Massimo. So simple!

Lucky ekasih flers cum Astro subscribers

http://www.mmail.com.my/content/87743-free-satellite-tv-lowincome-earners

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is taking further steps to ensure the lower income group does not lose out in today’s world of high technology and information exchange.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said those without quick access to real time information would not be able to compete and be sidelined by those with immediate access to information, news and data.

“To narrow this digital divide we must ensure that this service is freely available or is available at a low and minimal cost to ensure those in the lower income category will have access to the latest news, information and data,” said Najib after launching the nation’s first free satellite TV, Astro NJOI, at PPR Cochrane Perkasa in Cheras yesterday.

“Knowledge is a very important component of any highly progressive society and it is the foundation upon which a nation of excellence is built.

“Giving the people access to a wealth of information is critical in producing a multi-talented, highly-skilled, creative and innovative workforce necessary to build a knowledge-based economy towards becoming a high-income nation.”

The first phase of Astro NJOI’s three-phase plan will see 50,000 people from the Prime Minister’s Office’s eKasih programme receiving free decoders and satellite dishes as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme aimed at giving free access to education, information, entertainment and sports to low-income communities.

Yesterday, Najib presented decoders and satellite sets to 20 recipients from the eKasih programme. Astro will install the sets within three to 10 days.

The company’s NJOI CSR programme will see RM100 million as an initial investment which will increase to RM400 million over the next five years.

Its second phase will see the decoders being sold to the public at retail outlets in the first quarter of next year. After purchasing the decoders, consumers do not need to pay the monthly subscription.

The third phase will enable NJOI users to purchase additional programmes through a prepaid system.

The NJOI package will include 37 channels with 18 TV and 19 radio channels, including education ones and news channels.

Some lucky recipients already Astro subscribers

WHILE Astro may have the noblest of intentions in its NJOI corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, some recipients are already customers despite being in the government’s eKasih programme.

Speaking to The Malay Mail after receiving his free decoder, Abdul Alim Othman, 57, said he had a decoder at home but was still “very happy” to get a free set from Astro yesterday.

“I believe this is my rezeki (good fortune) to get a new decoder. I received a call from Astro two weeks ago and another last week confirming I will be one of the lucky recipients of their new NJOI decoder.

“I will use both decoders. I will put my new decoder in the living room so my four grandchildren can watch it when I babysit them and I will move my old decoder, which has more channels, into my room,” said the father- of-three.

Zaidi Zainal, 42, also has an Astro decoder at home but the account was registered under his brother who lives with him and his family.

When asked if he will keep both decoders, Zaidi said: “I will discuss this with my household first. But I do thank Astro for giving me this new free NJOI decoder for which I don’t have to pay a monthly subscription.”

Rosli Md Akhir, 43, said he used to have a decoder about 10 years ago before experiencing financial difficulties.

“I am only a night market trader. Once, I went through a very hard time and couldn’t pay the monthly subscription.

“I am so happy to receive this gift from Astro and I really appreciate what they have done for me.”

Wow! This ekasih flers are luckier (and richer!) than me...I'm also a subscriber of  Astro but I only have one decoder and am paying RM79.90 every month for 'FREE' NJOI and 'PAID' channels.

Garrett KLCC: See only but don't flash our popcorn!

I wonder why this dumb sign?
I didn't see this sign when I was at Garrett Universal Studio Singapore.
As far as I know, Singapore is known for her high level of customer service - hence, very customer-centric.
Is Garrett KLCC afraid of possibility that the photos taken will be used against them?

Ok, another picture. hehe...you can click to enlarge and see the price.
Apparently, 1 large size Chicago Mix (Caramel and Cheese corn) costs S$13.00 according to a blog post here but in Malaysia, it only costs RM26 or S$10.70 after conversion (as per my above picture).
Now, that's S$2.30 cheaper!
(But then again, I may not be comparing apple to apple, so don't take my word for it).

See the delicious Macadamia Caramel Crisp!

Fact: Cheap 1Malaysia stuff for cheap rakyat's lives

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 — The Health Ministry should instruct the operator of Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia stores to institute a refund policy for their now-recalled 1 Malaysia branded products, DAP publicity chief Tony Pua said today.
“We would call upon the minister to make the public announcement to be printed in all mainstream newspapers for all consumers who have purchased the products, to return the items to Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia stores for a full refund. (Read more @ The Malaysian Insider)

In response to Pua's call, Ameer, the Mydin boss tweeted, “Milk withdrawn on 12nov so why u still playing it up not enough cheap publicity ke.”

Ameer's reaction is totally childish.

If Ameer is a genuine (and not a greedy) businessman who has the rakyat's wellbeing at heart, he would have made sure that the products were compliant with food regulations.

But then again, I guess that would have been a difficult duty to do since the cost and price of the products had to be kept as low as possible.

Whether or not Mydin is maximisng margins, it should not compromise on the quality of the products, all the more when low-income consumers are the target market.

KR1M bukan main murah malah jauh lebih mahal! ;)

The reality of Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia’s (KR1M) products is far from the “outrageous” claims of them being up to 50 percent cheaper than in other markets.

Saying this today, Pakatan Rakyat MPs - who had lugged samples of grocery products to Parliament to prove their point - said that while some products in the KR1M shops were indeed cheaper but they were not as cheap as touted. Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak mooted the idea of setting up KR1M in June to tackle the escalating cost of living, and introduced 250 ‘1Malaysia’ products that were claimed to be 40 percent cheaper than other sundries in the market.

NONE DAP’s national publicity chief Tony Pua (left) told a press conference, “The price differential is far less than the claims of 30 to 50 percent for most products. A shopping trip to a local hypermarket such as Carrefour, buying products from condensed creamer to canned sardines to dishwashing liquid, will immediately show that the truth is far from the outrageous claims made by the domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism minister and the prime minister.”

Pua said, “For a 1 litre bottle of 1Malaysia bleach, KR1M will charge you RM1.90, claiming huge savings of 36 percent. However, one can easily purchase 1 litre of Carrefour or Tesco branded bleach for only RM1.29 or a massive 47 percent cheaper than KR1M.”

Stop feigning ignorance over prepaid phone tax. Najib stop pretending lah

September 13, 2011
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — PAS has told Datuk Seri Najib Razak to stop pleading ignorance over the six per cent service tax imposed on prepaid mobile users, saying the telcos were just implementing the Budget 2011 tabled last year.
The service tax of five per cent was imposed since 1998 to all mobile phone service providers but Najib, who is Finance Minister, raised the tax to six per cent in the Budget proposals for this year.
“The telcos only implemented the budget presented by Najib for 2011. When they start to implement it, Najib blames the telcos, to portray himself as a caring leader ahead of the general election,” said Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (picture), who heads PAS’s Research Centre.
The telcos had been absorbing the tax to grow the mobile phone service which now has nearly 28 million subscribers but agreed to pass on the tax effective September 15. However, the companies have decided to defer the tax again following a public outcry and a government request.
Najib had urged the companies to review the decision, which he said had nothing to do with the government.
PAS’s vice-president Mahfuz Omar, who leads anti-price hike movement Protes BN, said the telcos were only shifting the burden of the government-imposed tax to consumers.
He said not only the Telcos should stop charging consumers, the government must also abolish the tax.
In a statement yesterday, the telcos said they have agreed to defer implementing the service tax for purchases of prepaid reloads, starter and SIM packs upon requests from Najib and Minister of Information, Communications and Culture Datuk Seri Rais Yatim.
“The telecommunications companies have historically absorbed the levy on behalf of the customers, contributing around RM6 billion to the government. At present, it is the only service where tax is subsidised by the companies, and not paid by the customers.
“The Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM), in view of the industry’s concession, have agreed to take up the matter to necessary levels for an amicable resolution, with relief to all parties,” they said in a joint statement.

Unbelievable! Citibank not enough terminals for all customer service officers

Just a few minutes ago, I called Citibank and talked to a customer service officer. While my memory is still fresh, let me recap our conversation. It went something like this:
Me: I've not viewed my e-statement for a long time because I've forgotten both my username and password.
Officer: We will get an officer to call you and then give you the ATM pin.
Me: You mean you will mail the ATM pin to me?
Officer: Yes.
Me: What if the mail gets lost in the way? Is there another way?
Officer: No. We will mail the ATM pin to you and you need to register at the ATM in Citibank.
Me: Ok. In that case, can you tell me what's my current outstanding balance?
Officer: Sorry, I can't. All the officers are using the system.
Me: You mean there's not enough terminals for all your officers?
Officer: Yes, I just have my phone,

No air-cond for now. Najib forcing me to change lifestyle, adapt to 7% HIKE

The federal government has raised electricity tariffs by an average of 7.12 percent beginning June 1 as part of its subsidy reduction exercise. The average rise is 2.23 sen/kW unit, from the current average rate of 31.31 to 33.54 sen/kW unit while natural gas prices are also set to rise by RM3 per mmBtu every six months until it reaches market levels by 2016, when its price would be fully floated.

NONEAccording to Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Peter Chin (left in picture), domestic users who use less than 300kW unit per month or RM77 on their bill will not be subjected to this new electricity pricing scheme, which is multi-tiered according to usage - this means that 4.4 million or 75 percent out of a total 5.94 million households would not be affected by the new tariff.

The rate of monthly usage below 200kW unit will stand at 21.8 sen/kW unit while for usage between 201 to 300kW unit the tariff will remain as 33.40 sen/kW unit and these two rates are for the 75 percent of households.

The 23.5 percent or 1.39 million domestic users affected by the new tariff are those using 301kW to 1000kW units, the tariff has been raised from 0.1 to 10 percent, or RM0.07 to RM30.30.

The government has to fork out RM122 million annually in order to provide free electricity to 900,000 users who record less than RM20 usage monthly - hence, the waiving of the electricity bill for these users would cease on Dec 31, 2011.

WHO WILL NOT FORGET NAJIB'S ADVICE ON THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 2006?
