Civil servants will no longer be appointed as local councillors or heads of local municipalities in Penang under a new directive from the Pakatan Rakyat state government. Instead, politicians will be appointed in their place. The move will take effect by end of this month when the state government makes a fresh annual appointment of councillors for Penang island under the Pulau Pinang Municpal Council (MPPP) and for the mainland under the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP). At a press conference today, co-chairperson the state-level liaison committee, also known as the Penang Pakatan Rakyat Council (PPRC), Chow Kon Yeow revealed that the failure of district officers to attend municipal council meetings regularly, thus disrupting operations and the decision-making process considerably, were the main reasons behind the latest decision. He added that since municipalities were local governments accountable to the public, politicians were the ideal choices to helm them. At least, 5 municipal councils. Are there any more? I'm not sure. Too bad DBKL is under federal jurisdiction even though Kuala Lumpur is under Pakatan Rakyat. I love KL!

An Umno Youth-led rally against the deadly Israeli air strikes on Gaza Strip turned into a war of words today which saw the Palestinian ambassador having an argument with some protesters resulting in them staging a walk-out. The protest, held outside the Palestinian embassy in Ampang, was attended by 200 people, including Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin...However, the situation turned rowdy when the Palestinian ambassador to Malaysia Abdel Aziz Abu Ghoush ticked off some of the protestors who were holding photos of Hamas leaders. He wanted the photos removed as “we do not want to show divisions in the internal affairs of Palestine”...Earlier, Khairy, who is also member of parliament for Rembau, gave a spirited speech to the crowd saying that the Coalition Against Israeli Aggression will always be with the Palestinians until “they gain their freedom”. “I am here to tell you that we, Malaysians - Muslims and non-Muslims - want to show our support to the Palestinians as this is concerning humanitarian and economic issues. A protest that turned into a war in the same camp...and since when Khairy was a voice for non-Muslims Malaysians? I am neither for the Palestinians nor Israelites - both fighting for their own survival. Both have their own rights. ;)

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak couldn’t have made it any clearer - the upcoming Kuala Terengganu by-election is crucial for Umno. Indeed for him, Kuala Terengganu is the key to reversing Umno’s fortune. At a meeting with top editors two weeks ago, the prime minister-in-waiting has likened Kuala Terengganu to the by-election in Parit Raja 20 years ago, which saw Umno Baru raising from the ashes after being mauled in Johor Baru months earlier. Najib’s meeting with key editors from both the electronic and print media was held at his official residence. Also presence was Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor. PKR has today lodged a report relating to a slew of cases involving top politicians to test the newly-minted Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC). Party supreme council member Badrul Hisham Shaharin submitted a stack of documents containing 60 pages to MACC's assistant investigation officer Hasrul Shahrin Abdul Yazid at the commission's headquarters in Putrajaya this morning...According to Badrul Hisham, among the cases in his report were those involving former Malacca chief minister Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik and former International Trade and Industry Minister Rafidah Aziz...MACC, created as of yesterday, replaces the much-criticised Anti-Corruption Agency, and is being promoted as having more independence and greater accountability..."The people are waiting to see if the MACC will act in the interests of the people or if the changes are just cosmetic," Badrul said...Badrul Hisham said he also lodged reports against Najib and the prime minister himself over money politics.
