KOTA BHARU, Dec 2: PAS Murshidul Am Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat (pic) has reminded that a person's race was worthless in the eyes of Islam, and that one was only judged by one's fear of God. "A Chinese who is fearful of God is far more noble than a Malay who indulges in corruption, oppression, betrayal and so forth. No matter how high the songkok is on his head, without the fear of God, he is worthless," he said in a statement to Harakahdaily. He was responding to the strong reactions over the purported decision by Pakatan Rakyat to appoint DAP's Lim Kit Siang as a deputy prime minister. According to Nik Aziz, anyone can become a leader, "including Lim Kit Siang and whoever else", as long as he was a pious Muslim. "A non-Malay Muslim who is pious will be more beneficial to the country than a Malay who is corrupt," he stressed. The Kelantan Menteri Besar however questioned whether the media frenzy over the issue was a sign that the curtain was finally being drawn on Barisan Nasional. "To me, this is no more than a sign that UMNO and Barisan Nasional are on their death bed and have no chance of recovery. Praise to God, even the UMNO-controlled media have realised this," he said. UMNO mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia recently reported that Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim had agreed to appoint the veteran DAP politician as a deputy prime minister should Pakatan Rakyat win the impending general election. Nik Aziz said the euphoria generated by the report showed that the ruling party was chronically ill and dying. Giving the analogy of distribution of one's inheritance, Nik Aziz said it was not always the case that "such questions of inheritance would be debated when a person is healthy". "Issues of inheritance are usually debated when someone is on his death bed or is already dead," he added. 'What else is new?' Nik Aziz also clarified that there had been no discussion or decision made regarding the appointment of a deputy prime minister. "What else is new with the UMNO media? "Not long ago, they misquoted a phrase I used, 'Plastic Islam', as 'Palestinian Islam'. Misquoting and misreporting is a norm in UMNO-owned media," he added. On the angry reactions from UMNO leaders over the report, Nik Aziz reminded that the rise and fall of Malays in the country did not depend on UMNO. "Is UMNO the only party defending the Malays? Is the Malay race sovereign only upon the blunt keris of UMNO, and that they would fall when UMNO falls?" He reminded that UMNO had once surrendered the post of Chief Minister in Penang to Gerakan, even though the UMNO dominated the state assembly then. "Where was ketuanan melayu? Hidden in UMNO's tall songkok? "At that time, where were those professors and so-called intellectuals to comment on 'ketuanan melayu'?" asked Nik Aziz, referring to earlier condemnations from UMNO leaders over the speech by Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Dr Wan Azizan Wan Ismail, urging Malays to become a "dignified race" rather than harping on 'Ketuanan Melayu' (Malay supremacy). He said when former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad once called for Malaysians to ignore one's origin for the sake of 1Malaysia, there were no calls for him to be expelled from the country. "Isn't ignoring one's origin tantamount to ignoring 'ketuanan melayu'?"

‘Ketuanan Melayu’ not in Constitution, says Prof Khoo

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 — The terminology “Ketuanan Melayu” or Malay Supremacy need not be debated because it does not exist in the country’s constitution, said history expert, Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim.

He said that from the historical aspect, only the Rulers’ Supremacy was stated in the constitution where the people must show their loyalty to the Rulers.

“In the past, ‘Malay Supremacy’ was never mentioned within the Malay community. In history, such things are incorrect. What is stated in the Constitution is only the Rulers’ Supremacy, where you show loyalty to the state where you reside in.

“The Malays obtained the special privileges because they are the subjects of the Ruler. The position of the Malays is given special consideration and need not be disputed,” he said when contacted by Bernama, here tonight.

He was asked to comment on the statement by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail on the Malay Supremacy in her policy speech at the 7th National Congress of the party on Sunday.

Dr Wan Azizah called for the abolition of the concept of Malay Supremacy to enable Malaysian children to grown up with the vision of a ‘race of integrity’ or ‘Malay of Integrity’.

Khoo said the terminology ‘Malay Supremacy’ was only raised by politicians purely for political purposes, and he observed that politicians were now frequently raising issues that could lead to racial confrontations.

“Politicians should focus on their services to the public, helping the people. They should not encourage the people to quarrel,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Institute of Ethnic Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Prof Datuk Dr Shamsul Amri Baharuddin shared Khoo’s opinion that the term Malay Supremacy was coined by politicians in portraying the political and economic position of the Malays.

Questioning Dr Wan Azizah’s motive in raising the issue, he said the statement by the wife of PKR de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was merely a political gimmick and purely to cover up the crisis faced by the party currently.

“I don’t know why the issue was raised. What I notice is “Anwar’s Supremacy” in the PKR. It is Anwar’s Supremacy that must be abolished. The Malay Supremacy is merely to demolish Anwar’s Supremacy. In my opinion, the concept (Malay Supremacy) does not exist,” he said.

He said Dr Wan Azizah should re-examine what was meant by the term supremacy and should not question the special privileges of the Malays which had been enshrined ever since the era of the Malay Sultanate.

Shamsul Amri said that looking from the economic aspect, the Chinese community dominated 70 per cent of the economy while the Malays had only 30 per cent and there was no such thing as the Malays dominating in all aspects.

“If we look at it, the 70 per cent should be the supreme group. So, what does the Malay Supremacy show? What does supremacy mean? She (Dr Wan Azizah) herself is not clear on the meaning of supremacy,” he said.

Dr Shamsul Amri said politicians should be thinking about issues that were relevant for discussion instead of raising issues that could bring about negative developments between the races. — Bernama

Dr 'Porn' Chua head of Penang Port Commission: Penang CM surprised

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is “surprised” that the head of the Penang Port Commission (PPC) is not someone from the state when yesterday, the Prime Minister's Office announced Chua's appointment in a statement, saying that the year-long appointment will be effective up to Nov 14 next year.

However, he believes that former health minister and current MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek - who  succeeds MCA's former Jawi assemblyperson Tan Cheng Liang and appointed PPC chairperson on Nov 15 - is qualified for the post.

After officiating a function at the Seberang Perai Municipal Council today, Lim said, "Perhaps, in the past, the one who held the post did not show good performance."

Lim said the state government was willing to cooperate with Chua to improve the performance of the port and politically, it had no problem about this but in the past Tan did not deal very well with problems that cropped up.
 

Lim hopes that Chua can give more time to Penang and to the port to deal with its problems.
