Muhyiddin says take time out!
ROME, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- Deputy prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the MCA may need more time to calm down and resolve the party's internal crisis.

He also hoped that the party leaders could resolve the problems faced by the MCA in a more cautious manner so that the situation would not deteriorate.

Muhyiddin, who is here to attend the World Food Security Summit, said this to Malaysian journalists when asked on the latest development in the MCA.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat today announced in Kuala Lumpur that the party Central Committee meeting had rejected the extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to be held on Nov 28, and also announced the appointment of new members of the presidential council which saw the dropping of Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and Wanita head Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, who are staunch supporters of vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Muhyiddin, who is also the deputy chairman of Barisan Nasional (BN), said MCA leaders must adhere to the Greater Unity Plan (GUP) drawn up to resolve the party's internal crisis immediately.

In fact, the MCA must look for an intermediary in resolving the party problem if "people within the party do not get any support".

"This is normal. In fact even at international conferences, we have to find an intermediary to resolve issues," he said.

At a separate function, Muhyiddin also held a meeting with Indonesian Vice-President Prof Dr Boediono, here Wednesday.

Police Pass Azmin Share Probe Documents To MACC

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is to continue with the investigation into the alleged ownership of RM2 million worth of shares by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Azmin Ali and his wife, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said Wednesday.

He said copies of the original documents and statements connected with the case had been handed to the MACC by the police.

"An investigation was conducted previously by the MACC. As such, the records, documents and statements given to us were handed back to the MACC yesterday for them to continue the probe," he told reporters at the police Deepavali open house, here.

Anuar Shaari, a former secretary to PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, yesterday lodged a police report on the alleged ownership of shares by Azmin and his wife.

Asked to comment on claims that the police had used excessive force in a recent shooting in Klang where five suspected robbers were shot dead, Musa said the police also had the fundamental right to self-defence.

He said those who questioned police action should consider whether they wanted to support those who upheld the law or backed criminals.

"The duty of the police is to protect the people. We do not protect criminals," he said.

He said the police did not act indiscriminately but considered public order and shot criminals as the last resort.

"If they (criminals) become aggressive, we are forced to act. They should surrender if they do not want to die. We do not want our personnel to be shot first," he said.

Meanwhile, Musa appealed for assistance from anyone who had information on the position of private investigator P. Balasubramaniam.

The authorities, including the Immigration Department, constantly monitored the movement of individuals they were looking for at every entry-exit point of the country, he said when asked to comment on a news portal report that Balasubramaniam was back in the country after having "disappeared" since July last year.

Balasubramaniam and his family reportedly went abroad for fear of their safety after he had made a statutory declaration in relation to the murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu.

The police also want to record a statement from the private investigator over a break-in at his house in Taman Pelangi, Rawang, last year.

Ngeh said the motion showed displeasure against the minister for failing to take the incident seriously when he indicated the '1Malaysia' camp will continue.

Earlier, when Seetha was in a critical condition, Human Rights Party leader P Uthayakumar had warned that if Seetha died, he would take her coffin to Parliament as a mark of protest against what he described as the 'summary execution' of Indian Malaysians suspected to be involved in criminal activities.

Malaysiakini was told by P Uthayakumar that Seetha died at 3.05pm at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang. This morning at the Dewan Rakyat, an emergency motion by DAP MP Kulasegaran to debate the shooting was rejected by deputy speaker Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaffar, saying it was not an urgent matter.

M'sia suffers major blow in corruption index

Reforms earn praise, but graft ranking drops

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 17, 2009) : Transparency International Malaysia (T-IM) has acknowledged Malaysia’s efforts to deal with corruption although the country’s ranking on the corruption perception index (CPI) this year has declined.

TI-M president Datuk Paul Low said Malaysia’s ranking had slipped to 56th position this year from 47th last year, out of 180 countries surveyed.

However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s moves to initiate reforms in some institutions, especially the judiciary, and the setting up of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, to make them more independent, transparent and accountable, was the way forward for the country, he said at a press conference to announce Malaysia’s position in the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index 2009, today.

He said Transparency International Malaysia believed that the way forward for the country was to seriously combat corruption and to make government decisions and transactions more visible and transparent.

Low, however, suggested that the government should be more transparent in its procurement process by implementing "integrity agreement" with vendors to act as preventive measures to curb corruption.

Low said Malaysia’s decline in ranking in CPI 2009 of 0.6, from 5.1 in 2008 to 4.5 this year, "may be attributed to the perception of little progress in combating corruption, and lack of political will in implementing effective anti-corruption measures".

Examples giving rise to the concern were the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) fiasco and the auditor-general’s annual report highlighting extraordinary public procurement abuses, he said.

"However, there are positive signs. The PKFZ fiasco is being actively and vigorously investigated, police reports have been made and suits have been taken against certain parties, and corrective measures have been taken.

"The United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) was ratified in September 2008. Integrity is a Key Result Area for the government, with the CPI as a key productivity index. The prime minister has formed a high-level task force to study and make recommendations for action to be taken on the auditor-general’s 2008 report," he said.

Meanwhile, DAP veteran and Ipoh Timur Member of Parliament Lim Kit Siang views Malaysia's drop in ranking as a national shame.

"I have no doubt that the death of DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock on July 16 at the building housing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission building in Shah Alam and the MACC's targeting Pakatan Rakyat representatives as major factors for Malaysia’s worst-ever TI CPI ranking and score," he said in a statement.
