KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- The issue on the amount of money spent and who was paying for the lawyer to accompany former private investigator P.Balasubramaniam while in London and Paris was raised Thursday.
Anuar Shaari, a former private secretary to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said the question now was how much money was paid to the lawyers who not only accompanied Balasubramaniam to London but also to Paris.
Balasubramaniam, who is now in India, had made a statutory declaration on the murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu on July 3, 2008, but on the following day retracted the sworn statement and replaced it with a second sworn statement before disappearing abroad.
Earlier this month, Balasubramaniam appeared in London to give a press statement besides facing the French authorities in Paris later on the contract for the sale of the submarine built by French company DCNS to Malaysia.
Anuar, in his press conference, also repeated the proposal by Umno Supreme Council member, Dr Mohd Puad Zarkhasi, who is also a Deputy Education Minister, on July 8 that the Inland Revenue Board and the Royal Malaysian Customs investigated the source of funds received by the lawyer.

PM splurges RM50k in attempt for US coverage, additional RM50k as a 'success fee'
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak paid RM50,000 (US$15,000) to a Washington-based political consultant in April this year in an attempt to get an opinion-editorial article written by him published in one of the major newspapers in the United States.
The prime minister will have to fork out an additional RM50,000 as a 'success fee' to the consultant, Quinn Gillespie & Associates (QGA), should the article eventually appear in print. QGA is a top public relations and lobbying firm in Washington DC. This information is revealed in documents filed under the Foreign Agents Registration Act by QGA. According to the documents obtained by Malaysiakini, QGA was assigned by another consultancy firm, The Laurus Group, to try and convince a major US newspaper to carry Najib's article.

M'sia happy with Britain's cooperation in blogger probe
KUALA LUMPUR (July 21, 2010): Malaysia is satisfied with Britain's cooperation in investigations pertaining to blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, who is reportedly in London.
Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said the matter must be handled according to legal channels, with one country repecting the laws of another.
"Yes, I have no complaints. Everything has got to be done by legal means. One does not flout another country's laws and it is much more, even so, for the authorities in both countries to respect the laws of the other country," he said.
Abdul Gani was speaking at a press conference after the signing of the Treaty on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters between Malaysia and Britain here today, to cooperate in the prevention and combating of transnational criminal activities.
Asked if the treaty would help in bringing back Raja Petra from London, the attorney-general said: "It will help in all cases, not only Raja Petra.
"But remember, we still have to comply with each other's laws. This is not simple."
Abdul Gani said, there was no extradition treaty between Malaysia and Britan, and that was a separate process from the treaty signed today.
However, he said Malaysia could make a request to any country on the directive of the home minister, and subjected to the laws of the country involved.
"There has always been an understanding on this extradition but so far, we have not made any application to the United Kingdom for a proper extradition treaty.
"An extradition treaty is a matter for us to think about later, but we are very happy with this mutual assistance treaty today," said Abdul Gani.
Raja Petra fled the country after two warrants of arrest were issued, following his failure to be present in court proceedings on April 23 and May 23 last year, for allegedly posting seditious and slanderous articles on his website.
Asked if written replies by former private investigator S. Balasubramaniam to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was admissible in a court of law in this country, Abdul Gani replied: "Whatever MACC does, it has to comply with our laws to determine admissibility. You don't actually need to have your statement recorded by the police.
Documents are all admissible in court, provided you comply with the law. So, it's fine with me," he said.
The private eye courted controversy when he made two conflicting sworn declarations related to the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu.
The MACC recently decided against going to London to record a statement from Balasubramaniam and instead, submitted questions for him via his lawyer. -- Bernama

Speakers at a seminar disputed that Dr Mahathir Mohamad was anti-Jewish, despite his former vocal criticism against the Zionist regime.
Ong Kian Ming, a former Socio-Economic Develoment and Research Institute senior policy analyst and currently a University College Sedaya International lecturer, said that the former PM was not anti-Semitic because he actually interacted with Jewish people. During a question-and-answer session, Ong said, "My previous tutor, Donald Horowitz, said he used to chat with Dr Mahathir when he visited Harvard where he got a lot of his ideas."
