Independent polls-watch group National Institute for Electoral Integrity (NIEI) questioned the deals made by Muhyiddin, including a pledge to build a bridge costing some RM7mil to RM10mil in Manik Urai should the Barisan wins the by-election.
NIEI executive director Amin Iskandar said the Barisan had contravened the principles of a “fair election” as the Federal government had misused its authority to make such a promise during the by-election when its opponent was not in authority to make the same deal.

Amin said Muhyiddin had marred the campaigning in Manik Urai, which was supposed to be carried out in a manner that is just, free and transparent.
He added that the deal by Muhyiddin also tantamount to ‘political blackmail’ which suggested that the people of Manik Urai would not get that bridge if they did not vote for the Barisan.
The NIEI proposed that the Elections Commission work in collaboration with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to submit to Parliament to formulate anti-elections corruption laws, as had been done in Taiwan and some other Asian nations.
