Law of the jungle rules the day in Perak: Thanks to BN unlawful power grab

October 02, 2010 21:40 PM
TAIPING, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- The Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah said the country could be hijacked by groups which resorted to the law of the jungle where victory was in hands of the most powerful and largest crowd.

He said, if the truth was established from improper courage, it would lead to provocation to the extent of challenging the law.

National security and public order would be threatened if the law was not respected while law enforcement agencies were challenged, he added.

"If the people fail to employ correct values to uphold the law, the country might end up in anarchy. The strength of the democratic practice is pivotal in upholding the law," he said when presenting outstanding awards at Sekolah Menengah Sains Raja Tun Azlan Shah here Saturday.

Raja Nazrin said the culture of respect for the law and its enforcement agencies reflected the level of discipline instilled and embedded among the people.

The element of discipline should not be compromised in building the strength and cultural glory of a community, he noted.

"To bend a bamboo, is best done as a shoot. As such, discipline should be inculcated from the beginning of life, starting when the child is still in the womb, carefully nurtured in the family setting, strengthened in the school environment and reinforced at the work place," he said.

Raja Nazrin also recalled several incidents that befell the authorities such as what had happened in Kuala Terengganu on Sept 16 when a policeman was knocked down and assaulted by two teenagers during a crime-prevention and illegal racing operation.

"Such incidents portrayed the ugly adolescent behaviour which completely ignored the law to the extent of reaching the level of misplaced bravery, being provocative and challenging the authorities," he said.

He expressed concern if the inculcation of discipline -- which was an important component in education -- showed signs of waning.

"The indicators whether the disciplinary element is given priority by an institution, can be seen from the physical aspect of the institution and the dexterity of its occupants.

"If the building of the institution looks old, the ceilings covered with cobwebs, the furniture is dusty, broken windows are not repaired, garbage strewn everywhere, the grass is long, the drains are clogged and the toilet is dirty, it shows the leadership of the institution has compromised on many aspects of discipline," he said.

Educational institutions like schools should not compromise on discipline. Rather, it should be the main agenda in guiding students in assessing the level of achievement or rating of the school, he said.

Raja Nazrin said, if students were exposed to wrong values, when they completed their studies and were given responsibilities, they would adopt wrong values as the norm and become advocates of wrong values and bad habits.

He also said that the firmness of schools and teachers needed to be supported by parents.

"The habit of blaming teachers will cause them to discard the responsibility of disciplining students.

"The country will not be safe and peaceful, if the future generation is not disciplined, forsaking the law and dare to take provocative actions against enforcement agencies," he added.

Raja Nazrin later presented the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia 2009 distinguished award to Noor Azdayanti Ahmad, and special awards for outstanding students in international languages to Mohamad Adam Mohamad Saladri (French), Faiznur Abdul Rahman (Japanese) and Muhammad Rasydan Ahmad Nazri (Arabic).
