Umno Youth members fined over Karpal fracas

  • UPDATED 3.35PM A parliamentary select committee has recommended a fine of RM1,000 each for the four. It will also punish eight MPs for failure to cooperate with the inquiry. [VIDEO INSIDE]MORE
  • Victim Karpal charged as well
    MPs face admonishment by speaker
On Feb 26, chaos erupted outside the Parliament lobby when Karpal was mobbed by a group of angry Umno Youth members. The day before, he had called them celaka and accused them of sending him a death threats and two 'live' bullets in the mail two weeks earlier.

Karpal, as a professional lawyer, should know better not to falsely accuse others while the Umno Youth members, sad to say, had to resort to violence. The former who was old and wheelchair-bound could certainly not defend himself against the latter. Shame to the four!

Anwar's appeal: Court of Appeal to sit today

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's appeal against the transfer of his case from the Sessions Court to the High Court will be heard before the appellate court at 2.30pm today.MORE
Sodomy trial slated for July 8
Issue is over AG's role in the case
Anwar is appealing against the High Court decision on March 5 which reversed the Sessions Court's decision to retain his sodomy trial at the Sessions Court.
The politician's appeal is based on his challenge on the validity of the transfer certificate signed by Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail.
Anwar had claimed that Abdul Gani could not sign the document because he was still under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in connection with Anwar's police report on the "black eye" incident.

Conversion laws: Rulers put the brakes

  • UPDATED 7PM Amendments to three laws pertaining to conversions and religion will have to be shelved for now pending feedback from state religious authorities, ordered the Malay rulers today.MORE
  • Tied to Rulers' Conference today?
    Why invite only Muslim MPs?
As a result of the decision by the rulers, a briefing for all Muslim parliamentarians on the amendments to three laws was cancelled at the last minute today.
The briefing was to be given by Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail to all Muslim parliamentarians at 6pm today.
Pending all the 'yellow tapes' and 'red tapes', I guess we can expect more 'body-snatching'. Do the religious zealots not know that they may possess the body but not the soul? Only the Almighty, the Possessor of heaven and earth, has the power to transport one into heaven or hell.

Manek Urai: Tuan Aziz aims to deliver

BN candidate for Manek Urai Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat fancies his chances in the by-election and tackles claims in cyberspace about abuse of power and corruptionMORE
BN's Tuan Aziz confident of his chances
'Allegations in cyberspace baseless'

Tuan Aziz who resigned as manager of state economic agency Kelantan Selatan Development Authority (Kesedar) today, told Malaysiakini: I believe BN is capable of unseating PAS.
Less than 24 hours after Tuan Aziz's candidacy was announced, the webspace has been abuzz with allegations that he was involved in ‘abuse of power and corruption".

Again, not surprising for allegations to surface, especially against an Umno man. After all, Mahathir acknowledges that the number one enemy of Umno is corruption and not the opposition. ;)

Manek Urai PAS: Local Umno Youth chief is BN's candidate

  • BREAKING NEWS Kuala Krai Umno Youth chief Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat, 39, will face off with Kuala Krai PAS division treasurer Mohd Fauzi Abdullah, 50, for the state seat on July 14.MORE
  • A reluctant candidate?
    PAS holds a strong grip
According to Malaysiakini, Tuan Aziz said if possible, he would not want to be a candidate. Reason being there were many other able senior party leaders who could contest.

Well, another reason is PAS is still the favourite to win.

Even though Umno expects a tough fight and may end up losing, it still wants to contest. Aiyah. Why waste time and money again...well, never mind, I guess Umno has a lot of money to spend... ;)

Hi, my name is Jackson...Michael Jackson...

Among the names that my parents wanted to give me when I came into this world was 'Jackson'.

Needless to say, the name had to do with Jackson 5, an American popular music family group and one of the biggest pop-music phenomena of the 1970s. Who was in it? Michael Jackson, of course.

Today, the media (print and electronic) is still abuzz MJ-related news. Many felt he died too young.

All creatures great and small will have to bite the dust one day, when we know not.

Well you could read some of MJ-related articles here in The Malaysian Insider.

Another good read is 'Michael Jackson: The Death of Peter Pan' by TIME.

RM1 million is nothing to YY!

Three days ago, Malaysiakini reported Ng Yen Yen as saying:
The money is not in the form of cash to him. To promote Malaysia in Europe, RM1 million is nothing.
Today, I read in MI:

It certainly triggered my memory. Three days ago, I was appalled to read her 'one-million-ringgit' statement.

Yes, 1 million ringgit may be nothing to any BN minister, especially YY.

If 1 million ringgit is nothing, could YY part with 1 million and share it with 1 million Malaysians?

Manek Urai: Najib expects tough fight

  • The prime minister however said that Umno still has a chance to win if it fields a candidate who has the capability to serve the people.MORE
  • 'Will not dance to PAS' tune'
BN candidate will face Mohd Fauzi
Though Manek Urai is regarded as a PAS stronghold, the margin of victory here during the last several elections have been modest at best, rarely exceeding 2,000 votes.

Whoever the Umno candidate is, he will be set to face PAS’ Kuala Krai division treasurer Mohd Fauzi Abdullah. His candidacy was announced last night by PAS spiritual leader and Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

PAS VP: Najib's disappointment shows his 'true colours'

  • Salahuddin Ayub goes on a tirade against Umno and describes it as being 'racist' for not accepting the fact that PAS is not interested in any unity talks.MORE
  • Unity not possible
    NGOs also disappointed

Meanwhile, Jemaah Islam Malaysia (JIM) president Zaid Kamaruddin argued that there is "no real reason" for the unity government talks to take place in the first place as the idea only came up after the ruling coalition suffered a severe setback in the general election last year.

"The election results should not be the reason for the unity talks...we can't just talk about having unity just because we lost in the general election," he said.

A(H1N1): Toddler among 11 new cases, total now at 91

For the latest update, click here to read at The Star Online.

Snippets from Malaysiakini:
  • UPDATED 4.55PM But the good news is that of the 91 cases detected so far, 35 patients have recovered while others are responding well to treatment.MORE
  • 9 cases today, including a 19-month-old baby
    Health units in schools
Even my wife was not spared from the swine flu phobia. She was on 3-day medical leave due to viral-infection. Thus, MIA from office. Sad to hear from my wife today that there was a rumour going around that she was infected by A(H1N1). The rumourmonger was her female colleague. Sad.

We are victims too, says dad of flu-hit schoolgirl

We are victims too, says dad of flu-hit schoolgirl

THE father of the 11-year-old girl from SJK (C) Jalan Davidson infected with Influenza A (H1N1) has pleaded with the public and parents to stop hurting them, reported Sin Chew Daily.

Some parents of students from the school had been demanding that they make a public apology for spreading the virus to other students, he said, adding that it was “irrational and ridiculous” for these people to do so.

“What have we done wrong? Why ask us to apologise? Do they think we want this to happen to our family? We are also victims in this incident,” he told the daily.

He said he did not understand why certain quarters could not support the family but rather blamed them for the incident.

“I am very worried now for my daughter, who is already under tremendous pressure and mental distress,” he said. “How is she going to face the pressure from her classmates and teachers when she goes back to school?”

He said it was difficult for the family to undergo the five-day quarantine period when people were constantly criticising his family.

“I feel helpless when people criticise my children and I can’t do anything as a father to defend them because I have been quarantined too,” he said.

Two of the man’s daughters were admitted to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment for the illness and were discharged yesterday.

In its editorial, Nanyang Siang Pau said the Government must be stern in enforcing the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease Act 1988 to ensure that those under quarantine did not break the order.

“The virus is highly contagious and enforcing the Act, where one can be fined RM10,000 or jailed for two years or both, will serve as a deterrent,” it said.

Classic case of Chinese vs Chinese. Aiyo...why public apology? Then all hit by H1NI must make a public apology. Stop the stupid demand lah. Pity the father and kid. Why Chinese no compassion? So cold-blooded...

manek urai pas umno PM: 'A religious duty to have unity talks'

  • UPDATED 7.05PM Najib also claims that many are disappointed that unity talks between Umno and PAS have failed to materialise.MORE
  • Non-Muslim interests 'will be protected'
    'Unity talks go beyond politics'
He also said that the decision by PAS to reject the unity talks did not reflect the wishes of the whole party, but of some leaders only.

"The decision to reject the unity government at the PAS meeting does not mean that the whole party members agree with it," he said.

Similarly, some leaders who are for unity talks do not reflect the wishes of the whole party. In other words, unity talks between Umno and PAS can only take place if all party members agree!

A(H1N1) FLU HITS JOHOR NOW

  • BREAKING NEWS The state records its first case of the flu through a 19-year-old student who returned home from Melbourne via Singapore.MORE
  • Family placed under quarantine
    68 cases nationwide yesterday

JOHOR BARU, June 24 — A 19-year-old female student was confirmed the first influenza A (H1N1) victim in Johor after returning from Melbourne, Australia, two days ago.

State Women, Family, Community and Health Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said today the student landed at Changi Airport, Singapore, on board flight SQ0238 and had fever and flu upon reaching her home in Johor Baru.

"The student was home on vacation after six months in Melbourne. She is now being monitored at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital,” she told reporters.

Dr Robia said the student's family, including the father, mother, 16-year-old brother and 17-year-old sister were under home quarantine for a week.

The taxi driver, 36, who sent the student home was also under home quarantine.

Dr Robia said the student's grandmother died of old age this morning and Health Department staff would help the family with the funeral arrangements to ensure that they were not exposed to others.

She said Health Department staff would also be sent to the schools of the student's siblings — Sekolah Menengah Datuk Jaafar and Sekolah Menengah Infant Jesus Convent — because the two attended school yesterday.

"We will check the two schools to prevent any spread of the virus," she added. — Bernama
