Airline executive Shahrinawati Abu Bakar's death early today was even more tragic than previously thought when new facts emerged this evening.
Police this evening said she was not slashed to death but died after a motorist who tried to go after the men who had just robbed her hit Shahrinawati instead.
Ampang police chief Assistant Commissioner Amiruddin Jamaluddin said it was the motorist and his friend who rushed Shahrinawati to the hospital but she succumbed to her injuries.
"The motorist had witnessed the two men trying to rob the victim. He then reversed his car to stop the two from escaping on a motorcycle but accidentally hit the victim instead," said Amiruddin.
Initial reports suggested that Shahrinawati died from slash wounds inflicted by the robbers but investigations showed otherwise.
The two robbers escaped on a black Yamaha LC motorcycle but it was learnt that one of them dropped his wallet.
The incident occurred in front of the Palm Villa City Garden Condo in Taman Cempaka, Ampang, where the victim stayed with her three younger sisters.
AirAsia X officer Shahrinawati, 30, was attacked by the two men as she got out of her car at about 2.45am.
Best friend Siti Mariam Mohd Hanif, 23, an AirAsia X ground executive, described her as an excellent team leader.
"She was strict when it came to work but that was how she earned everyone's respect. She was a natural problem-solver," Siti Mariam said, adding that the last time she met her friend was at a staff briefing yesterday afternoon.
She was informed of her death by Shahrinawati's fiance Mohd Azrul Kamarudin, a security officer with AirAsia X.
Shahrinawati's father, Abu Bakar Jemain, 53, was calm when met at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital mortuary.
"This is fated. Let police handle the investigations," he said.
Abu Bakar, a businessman from Miri, said he last met his daughter on Tuesday at her condo.
"I come down often to KL to meet my daughters."
Friends and colleagues were at the Nurul Hidayah mosque in Pandan Indah this evening to pay their last respects.
Among them was AirAsia X chief executive officer Azran Osman Rani.
Azran paid tribute to Shahrinawati in his email to staff, saying "she was a promising young talent" who had been sent to Melbourne to get international experience. - August 29, 2013.

What insult? Censor understands Namewee movie, can’t understand Utusan: Raja Azhar Raja Abdul Manap vs bigots in Utusan

What insult? Censor understands Namewee movie, can’t understand Utusan

One of Utusan Malaysia’s favourite targets, the Malaysian censor, yesterday rebutted the Umno-backed daily’s criticism of Namewee’s latest movie, Kara King, in which it targeted one scene in particular.

The scene shows Namewee (pic), who plays the lead role, relieving himself by the roadside and while attempting to turn around to bribe a policeman, he accidentally urinates on a Malay couple passing on a motorcycle.
“What’s the fuss about the scene? I do not know how Utusan could have interpreted it as being insulting to Malays," said Film Censorship Board chairman Datuk Raja Azhar Raja Abdul Manap in an interview with The Malaysian Insider.
Utusan Malaysia’s weekly edition, Mingguan Malaysia, claimed that the scene was disrespectful to the Malay community.
On Sunday, Rosdan Ahmad wrote: “Is it too difficult to read Namewee’s agenda to insult Malays in this film? The portrayal of Malays being urinated on by the Chinese survived and was not snipped out?”
The writer also took a swipe at the board, questioning why the scene was allowed.
Raja Azhar responded, “The urine accidentally splashed on the Malay couple. This is a comedy. It depicts the behaviour of the lead actor and his bad manners. There is nothing racial about it. That is why we allowed the scene.
“We look at the whole picture, not just the one scene alone. There is a message in the movie. The lead actor was of bad character and he eventually became good.
“If the scene was cut, the behaviour of the actor would not be portrayed to viewers.  I don’t know how Utusan could have interpreted it that way."
Meanwhile, Namewee took to his Facebook page to urge Utusan to stop playing the race card.
Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, said the newspaper has to stop attributing racial motives to his films and harping on race issues, and instead encourage positive thinking.
“As we all know, my films encourage the spirit of ‘One Malaysia’. No matter what race you are, every Malaysian has equal opportunity to participate in my film.
“Only those racist would focus on race,” he said in his posting.
Kara King is about a Hong Kong singer whose wife has mysteriously disappeared and how he copes with life after that while raising his two children in a small town in Malaysia.
The movie was released nationwide on August 1 to moderate returns at the box office.
The criticism of Namewee’s movie is the second time the board has been attacked by Utusan Malaysia recently.
Last month, following criticisms from the newspaper, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi suspended the release of The New Village, pending another review by the board.
Utusan claimed then, in its weekend edition, that the film glorified communism. The board, which maintained that the movie was about a love story set during the Malayan emergency, had cleared it for screening in September last year. – August 27, 2013.

Sex-deprived marriage: Shahnaz (Sheila Majid's sister) vs 'philandering' Abu Bekir Mahmud (Taib's son), Aussie mistress, Russian wife

Sarawak CM’s son had child with Aussie mistress, says ex-wife in Syariah court

BY RITA JONG
August 27, 2013
Latest Update: August 27, 2013 02:37 pm
The Syariah High Court today heard of the Sarawak chief minister's son's philandering ways when he was still married to his wife of almost two decades, Shahnaz A. Majid (pic).
Shahnaz, 50, said Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Abdul Taib had brought an Australian and a Russian woman to family gatherings while they were still married.
She said she was informed about his relationship with the Australian woman, with whom he had a son, named Adam.
"He took her to his younger brother's wedding in 2000 or 2001 in Kuching," she said when questioned by her counsel Akbardin Abdul Kader today.
"Her name is Louise Hiley. I'm not sure if they were married but they have a son called Adam."
She said she was later told that Hiley and Mahmud had gone their separate ways and that Adam was with Hiley.
Shahnaz, who is jazz singer Datuk Sheila Majid's sister, was testifying in the trial of her application to get RM300 million in matrimonial property and RM100 million in gifts (mutaah) as the divorce settlement.
Shahnaz is also claiming 50% of all assets owned by Mahmud Abu Bekir, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud's son. These include luxury cars, houses in various locations around the world, land in Sarawak and shares.
The divorce settlement proceedings are also exposing the purported wealth of the Sarawak chief minister’s family.
In court papers filed during her divorce application, Shahnaz had sought to have Mahmud Abu Bekir’s assets — among which she listed seven luxury cars, thousands of hectares of land in Sarawak and shares in 15 companies - declared as joint property and for it be halved.
She married him on January 9, 1992 and they have a son, Raden Myura Abdul Taib Mahmud, 20.
They were married for 19 years and four months before Mahmud filed for divorce on May 11, 2011.
"We were happy in the early stage of our marriage, but that didn't last long. After a while, our marriage was on the rocks as a result of Mahmud's irresponsible behaviour," said Shahnaz.
"We eventually divorced and I had to face a lot of problems as he was hot tempered and violent."
She also told the court that she had been deprived of nafkah batin (sexual intercourse) for 10 years during her marriage.
She added that Mahmud had also treated her unfairly as his first wife. After Hiley, he married a Russian woman.
Akbardin: How did you know he married the Russian woman?
Shahnaz: I read about it in an article in a magazine called The Peak in September 2010. He gave an interview to the magazine and had acknowledged that the Russian woman was his wife.
Akbardin: What was her name?
Shahnaz: Elena Vasilenko.
"He once came with the woman to our home and took our son out. I did not know then that they were married," she added.
Shahnaz added that prior to their divorce, Mahmud had also taken Vasilenko to his mother's birthday party.
Hearing before judge Muhamad Abdul Karim Wahab continues on September 2.
Shahnaz, now a housewife, holds an MBA in finance and was at one time a director of the family-owned Cahaya Mata Sdn Bhd.
The trial began on September 24 where various testimonies on Mahmud's assets and accounts, allegedly amounting to billions of ringgit, had been revealed.
Subsequently in March this year, the Syariah Court of Appeal, in allowing Mahmud's application, ordered a retrial before another judge, as the highest religious court in the country found that the mutaah hearing was not conducted according to procedure.

The case therefore is being reheard. - August 27, 2013.

Food haven @ Bukit Bintang tourist hotspot Jalan Alor food hub project to go on despite criticisms from bigots @ Utusan - says.com

Bukit Bintang is all about tourists, not Chinese community, say opposition lawmakers

BY LEE SHI-IAN and MUZLIZA MUSTAFA

Latest Update: August 26, 2013 07:11 am
Jalan Bukit Bintang is the most popular tourist destination in Kuala Lumpur with 133 hotels. August 25, 2013.Jalan Bukit Bintang is the most popular tourist destination in Kuala Lumpur with 133 hotels. August 25, 2013.Opposition lawmakers today reminded Utusan Malaysia that Bukit Bintang is a tourist magnet and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall is justified in spending RM12 million on the area to develop a Chinese food hub in Jalan Alor.
Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui said City Hall was reinforcing Jalan Alor’s pull as a food haven and the area was already packed with hotels catering to tourists.
“It has a whole range of hotels from budget to five-star. It simply is a case of City Hall helping the government to promote tourism in the country,” he told The Malaysian Insider, while pointing out that the area had some 133 hotels.
"It is childish to politicise the food hub project in Bukit Bintang. The writer has failed to recognise that the district is already a multinational food paradise."
Fong also noted that the area benefitted from Putrajaya’s ambitious Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) which ran from Kajang to Sungai Buloh.
"It is not about helping the Chinese community in the area, it is about tourists who frequent the area," he said.
He also pointed out that Chinese cuisine had a global audience and was not confined to just Malaysians but also foreigners.
“It is wrong to say it will benefit only the Chinese,” he said.
Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar said City Hall's development of Jalan Alor is in line with the development in various parts of the city.
"It reflects the multicultural community we have in the city. This is what makes us special," she said at her constituency's Hari Raya open house today.
She said Utusan's stand was curious as City Hall had before worked together with (Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd) MRCB to upgrade the Little India in Brickfields to promote it as an Indian cultural hub.
Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia has demanded to know why there is a need for a Chinese “Food Paradise” in Kuala Lumpur, continuing its attack on the community following the May 5 general election.
The Awang Selamat column in its Sunday edition, Mingguan Malaysia, has taken exception to City Hall's project to turn Jalan Alor into a Chinese food hub.
Awang Selamat, the pseudonym for the collective voice of the paper’s editors, warned City Hall to be mindful of who would benefit while noting that there is already a strong Chinese image in Bukit Bintang.
“It already resembles Hong Kong,” Awang Selamat said noting that spending a lot of  money into a location that would benefit the Chinese community is an exercise in futility.
“From way before, the voters in the area have never supported the government, even if given the moon and the stars, there will be no appreciation,” it said.
Jalan Alor is located in the Bukit Bintang parliamentary constituency and since it was formed it has always been won by the DAP.

The seat is currently held by the party’s treasurer, Fong Kui Lun. - August 25, 2013.

Jalan Alor food hub project to continue, says Federal Territories Minister

BY DIYANA IBRAHIM
August 26, 2013
Ignoring strong criticism from Utusan Malaysia, the Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s project to turn Jalan Alor (pic) in Bukit Bintang into a food haven will proceed as planned.
He said the project was aimed to give Jalan Alor a “cleaner and nicer look”.
“It will look like Jalan Petaling. The project will go on. Maybe the Datuk Bandar made a mistake in saying it is a food hub for the Chinese. It is for everyone’s benefit,” said Tengku Adnan when contacted by The Malaysian Insider today.
Tengku Adnan, a former Tourism Minister, said the project will add to the tourist pull of the neighbourhood.
The Umno secretary-general’s statement on the project today goes against Utusan Malaysia’s demand over the weekend as to why there is a need for a Chinese “Food Paradise” in Kuala Lumpur, continuing its attack on the community following the May 5 general election.
The Awang Selamat column in its Sunday edition, Mingguan Malaysia, has taken exception to Kuala Lumpur City Hall's (DBKL) project to turn Jalan Alor into a food hub for the community.
Awang Selamat, the pseudonym for the collective voice of the paper’s editors, warned DBKL to be mindful of who would benefit while noting that there is already a strong Chinese image in Bukit Bintang.
“It already resembles Hong Kong,” Awang Selamat said.
The paper pointed out that pouring RM12 million into a project, which would benefit the Chinese community, is an exercise in futility.
“From way before, the voters in the area have never supported the government; even if given the moon and the stars, there will be no appreciation,” it said.
Jalan Alor is located in the Bukit Bintang parliamentary constituency and since it was formed it has always been won by the DAP.
The seat is  held by the party’s treasurer, Fong Kui Lun.
The newspaper’s latest salvo at the Chinese community is in line with its attacks on it after the May 5 polls.
Following the general election, it ran a story with the provocative headline “Apa lagi Cina mahu?” (What more do the Chinese want?) on its front page.
Utusan blamed the community for Barisan Nasional’s dismal performance after it was returned to power with 133 seats – down from 140 in the 2008 polls.
Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun said City Hall was reinforcing Jalan Alor’s pull as a food haven and the area was already packed with hotels catering to tourists.
The writer has failed to recognise that the district is already a multinational food paradise.”
Fong also noted that the area benefited from Putrajaya’s ambitious Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system which ran from Kajang to Sungai Buloh.
"It is not about helping the Chinese community in the area, it is about tourists who frequent the area," he said.

He also pointed out that Chinese cuisine had a global audience and was not confined to just Malaysians but also foreigners. – August 26, 2013.

Six wounded in “random” shooting in Penang - Bernama

August 24, 2013
Latest Update: August 24, 2013 03:11 pm
Six men were wounded after two gunmen on a motorcycle fired “random” shots at an eatery in Taman Kasawari, Simpang Ampat, yesterday.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the group was having a drink at the eatery when the assailants arrived on a motorcycle.
"Upon reaching the eatery, the two assailants quickly fired random shots at the six men.
"Two of them sustained severe injuries to the ribs and buttocks," he told reporters at the scene early today.
He said the victims, aged between 20 and 50, were taken to Sungai Bakap Hospital.
"According to witnesses, the two assailants wore full-faced helmet and sped off immediately after firing the shots," Abdul Rahim said.
He said further investigation into the case was being done under the Penal Code for attempted murder.
Abdul Rahim did not dismissed the possibility that the incident was connected to the cases involving a triad gang whose five members were shot dead recently.

"We have yet to ascertain the motive, but we believe it is connected to the cases involving the triad gang. We will track down those involved immediately," he added. - Bernama, August 24, 2013.

Altantuya murder: Sirul and Azilah freed, Abdul Razak freed. Najib Razak freed? So, who killed Altantuya? And why? SAYS.com

So, who killed Altantuya? And why?

NEWS ANALYSIS BY JAHABAR SADIQ, EDITOR

August 23, 2013

Latest Update: August 23, 2013 08:00 am

Seven years on, no one has paid the price for the death of Altantuya Shaariibuuu. And no one knows why the pretty Mongolian was killed one night in October 2006.
But today's Court of Appeal decision does not close the file on her mysterious murder.
Instead, the ruling to acquit former chief inspector Azilah Hadri and former corporal Sirul Azhar Umar raises more questions than ever.
Who killed her? Why?
She was shot dead and C4 explosives were allegedly used to blow her to bits but both police commandos said they had no access to the explosives. So what happened? Were there others involved?
She came into the country but there were no immigration records with her name. Did she use another passport? Can the authorities explain this?
Some of these questions that could have been answered if the likes of DSP Musa Safri had been called to give evidence.
The prosecution did not call him and the appeal court today allowed the appeal because material witnesses were not called to testify, including Musa.
Musa would have been able to testify what help that political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda had asked him to fend off Altantuya.
The interpreter had become Abdul Razak's lover but later hounded him that he had to hire private investigator P. Balasubramaniam to keep watch on her. When Altantuya turned up that fateful night on October 18, 2006, the policemen scooped her and that was the last time she was seen alive.
What followed rocked Malaysia's political establishment. Abdul Razak was held in connection with the murder and both police commandos Azilah and Sirul were later charged for Altantuya's murder.
Their connection to each other was simply Musa, who was aide-de-camp to then deputy prime minister and defence minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Now prime minister, Najib has denied any links to the case although Abdul Razak was closely associated with him. Will today's ruling provide closure for him too?
Will it also provide closure for Abdul Razak, who was the first to be acquitted of conspiring to kill Altantuya. He had admitted to fending her off but not asking for her death.
Interestingly, the prosecution never appealed his acquittal.
But the prosecution has said it would appeal today's ruling that freed Azilah and Sirul, both of whom were hooded and shielded from public view during their 159-day murder trial.

That again raises more questions. And endless possibilities. - August 23, 2013.

Miss Universe Australia 2013: Brand ambassador for Proton Australia - Turbocharged Proton Preve GX is her baby - www.says.com

Miss Universe Australia 2013 drives home a new Proton Preve!

Just recently, Miss Olivia Wells has just been crowned with the Miss Universe Australia 2013 title. As expected, this medical student will represent Australia in Donald Trump’s Miss Universe in Russia on November.

She’s hot and gorgeous!
As the winner and the beauty representative of Australia, she will take home the jewel tiara, some prize money and many other products from sponsors. Guess what, she will also be driving home Malaysian’s latest automotive pride, the Proton Preve! As Proton Australia is the gold sponsor for the Miss Universe Australia competition, Proton is taking no chance to promote their latest model via product endorsement to the winner of this competition.
So they handed the key of the Proton Preve GX to Miss Olivia, and she gets to enjoy the advantages of five years free servicing, five years warranty, five years free roadside assist and the maximum five star ANCAP safety rating. As quoted from the winner herself while receiving her car “I can’t believe it, I’ve got a car. It means so much to me, so thank you Proton for my gorgeous new car”.
She now gets to enjoy Turbocharged car with Protonic gearbox!
The Proton Preve was brought into Australia earlier this year but met with less than stellar reviews by Australia car reviewers. Let’s hope the new Preve will gain better reputation with Olivia as the brand ambassador for Proton in Australia, while she gets to enjoy the CFE engine with Protonic gearbox!

Engulfed in flames: The Proton Waja that burst into flames along the PLUS Expressway, between Tapah and Bidor where Dr Kumar (inset) saved a baby girl from the flaming wreckage.

PETALING JAYA: With only seconds to spare, he pulled the motionless toddler out of a flaming wreckage only to see her turning blue from a lack of oxygen.

Fortunately, a few seconds was all Dr C.S. Kumar needed.

“The baby girl, who looked like she was 14 months old, was not breathing,” said the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre orthopaedic trauma unit head.

“She was like a lifeless, blue doll. I put my ears onto her chest and heard her heart beating.”

Dr Kumar quickly carried her to the middle of a highway to resuscitate her, using mouth-to-mouth and mouth-to-nose resuscitation.

“Looking down at her, I kept thinking ‘please God, do not do this to me’.

“Fortunately, one-and-a-half minutes later, she began to cry,” said the 41-year-old.

Recounting the drama which took place on Thursday at KM333.1 of the PLUS Expressway, between Tapah and Bidor, Dr Kumar, who is also a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, said he and his brother-in-law were driving with their families in two separate cars from Penang to Kuala Lumpur after a four-day holiday.

“A BMW and a Proton Waja collided, causing the Waja to burst into flames,” he recalled.

Dr Kumar, a father-of-three, and his brother-in-law quickly pulled over at the emergency lane and rushed to the burning car.

“It didn’t dawn on us then that there were still people in the car,” he said.

“Together with other passers-by, we quickly broke down the windows.

“The driver’s gave in first.

“I pulled out the driver with the help of my brother-in-law while the man in the passenger seat was pulled out by another passer-by,” he said.

It was then that he saw the toddler and her mother in the back seat.

Dr Kumar said an ambulance, which was on its way towards another accident on the expressway, arrived shortly after.

Despite giving regular lectures on trauma, Dr Kumar said he had not witnessed an accident involving a flaming car.

He said he was glad that all four people in the Waja were safe.

“It was amazing to see fellow Malaysians, regardless of race, coming together to save lives,” he said.

Tapah OCPD Supt Som Sak Din Keliaw said the driver of the Waja had wanted to switch lanes prior to the accident.

“The impact of the collision had damaged the gas tank, causing the vehicle to burst into flames,” he said.

“The driver and passenger of the Waja sustained light injuries and received outpatient treatment at the Tapah Hospital.”
