PUTRAJAYA, April 26 — Royal Malaysian Customs deputy director-general II Datuk Shaharuddin Ibrahim, 58, was shot dead near a traffic light near the Putrajaya police station today, police said.
Media reports say a gunman on a motorcycle shot Shaharuddin about 8.40am at Leboh Wawasan coming from Dengkil. He was rushed to hospital and immediately wheeled into the intensive care unit but was pronounced dead at 9.20am.
Police have cordoned off the area where Shaharuddin (picture) was shot and are checking the CCTV feeds.
KL police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamad Salleh confirmed the incident and that police are questioning Shaharuddin’s driver to establish what happened.
The shooting in the country’s administrative capital increases the spotlight on crime in Malaysia, just days after armed men knifed 52-year-old Irene Ong to death in Bukit Gasing, Petaling Jaya, in an attempted daytime robbery,
Putrajaya has been battling perception that crime is on the increase, saying that from 2009 to 2012 the national crime rate dropped by 27 per cent while street crime fell by 39.7 per cent.
Police also said the national crime rate fell six per cent in the first quarter of 2013 against the same period last year.
It is learnt that the gunman fired three shots but only one hit Shaharuddin in the neck. The Customs officer’s body has been sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur mortuary for a post-mortem.
The New Straits Times quoted Customs director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad as saying Shaharuddin’s death was a great loss to the department.
It was understood that Shaharuddin would be buried at the Precinct 20 cemetery here this evening.
Shaharuddin leaves behind his wife Datin Rahimah Ibrahim and two children, a daughter and a son.
