The government should not have any doubts and go ahead with the issuing of the sports betting license to the Berjaya Group, former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohammad said today. Again, Dr M spoke in support the issuance of the sports betting license to the Berjaya Group, saying, "The Chinese always gamble. To them it is not haram (prohibited by religion). Why should we prohibit them? We can't stop them from eating pork because for them it is not haram.
After hosting an education-related event at his Perdana Leadership Foundation office in Putrajaya, Dr M told the media, "If I were the government, I would approve it."
Dr M is dead wrong. The Chinese don't always gamble even though in classical Chinese literature, gambling (du) is considered the worst evil among four vices, the other three being gluttony, drinking and whoring (chi, he and piao). Nowadays, most Chinese do not profess any religion. They believe in themselves. They do as they please. Religion does not stop them from doing or not doing anything.
I'm a Chinese and don't gamble. Chinese are not the only ones who gamble. People regardless of race and faith, gamble - Malay Muslims included. Ok, gambling, 'porking' and drinking are not haram for the Chinese in Malaysia. How about whoring? One ex-Health Minister was caught whoring too! So normal lah. So please legalise whoring for the Chinese too. If Umno-led government cannot legalise whoring, at least give free condoms lah!
