MACC willing to meet PI Bala back home or abroad
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is willing to meet private detective P. Balasubramaniam either in Malaysia or abroad to record his statement pertaining to an alleged offer of RM5mil to retract a statuory declaration (SD) that he had made.
MACC chief commissioner Datuk Abu Kassim Mohamed said Balasubramaniam needed to come forward to give his statement as the main witness in order for comprehensive investigations to be carried out.
“We are prepared to meet him anywhere ... there are no problems facilitating the meeting, back home or abroad, we will agree (to the meeting),” he told a press conference here Wednesday.
He was commenting on developments in the investigations into a CD recording in which Balasubramaniam among others had alleged that he was offered RM5mil to retract a SD he made dated July 1,2008; that his family was threatened; that he received RM750,000 and RM800,000 from certain parties on separate occasions and was forced to issue a second SD negating the first.
The issues were allegedly related to the death of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu who was murdered in Shah Alam in October 2006. A political analyst, Abdul Razak Abdullah Baginda was acquitted of abetment in her murder on Oct 31, 2008 while two special action unit policemen were found guilty of the crime on April 9, 2009 and sentenced to death.
Bala went missing on July 4, 2008 but resurfaced recently with a CD recording of him making the allegations being posted on the Internet. His present whereabouts are unknown.
Meanwhile, MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdull said Balasubramaniam was only a witness and not an accused, and as such, he need not fear assisting the investigations.
“I urge him to come to us, he need not be afraid as he is only a witness and not someone to be charged,” he said at the same press conference.
Asked if the MACC was taking steps to track him down, Shukri said the MACC was making efforts to get a statement from him but no meeting had been arranged between the MACC and him so far. -- Bernama
