HEY HEY, YOU YOU, ME ME, WE WE! - www.malaysiakini.com

The signs first surfaced late last year, but the intelligence reports, the alarming graphs and the ground readings were ignored. Was it complacency or sheer arrogance that led the authorities to embark on a mission of vilification, arrests and charges in court? The ‘shock and awe’ tactics did not work. Out of this, instead, grew the courage of convictions that was expressed in the outpouring of disgust which swept away decades of fear, differences and indifference. For thinking the unthinkable and daring to achieve it, Malaysiakini proudly declares that its Newsmaker of the Year is......the rakyat! We salute the silent majority which was sufficiently rankled to find its voice especially in cyberspace, a frontier which dissenters exploited to maximum benefit. Blogs mushroomed - including that of the never-been-silent former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He kept up a constant bombardment of successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, his ambitious son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin and members of the Fourth Floor. (And the Newsmaker of 2008 is... - Mkini)

HEY HEY, YOU YOU, ME ME, WE WE, THE RAKYAT are the Newsmaker of the Year. Congratzzz

Anti-ISA for anti-pig for ISA - www.malaysiakini.com

An anti-ISA rally held at the Bandar Baru Bangi stadium last night had a minor hiccup when a group of activists tried to barge in to hand a memorandum to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang seeking his help to resolve the pig farming issue in Malacca. The group from the Majlis Permufakatan Ummah (Pewaris) and the Gabungan Gerakan Melyu Muda (GGMM) also tried to hand over the memorandum to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, who was not present at the rally. The two NGOs, along with some 200 activists, had came all the way from Paya Mengkuang, Malacca - some wearing T-shirts with slogans in support of ISA and against pig farming - sought the intervention of the two leaders to resolve the pig farming issue in their village which had dogged them for more than three decades...Hadi, when addressing the 2,000-strong crowd, said he would take a closer look at the memorandum submitted by the two NGOs and decide on whether to offer assistance. (Source: Malaysiakini) For ISA and against pig farming? Strange indeed. Will PAS intervene? If so, PAS will be seen as intolerant. Will pigs be totally wiped out of Malaysia one day? Perhaps. Then, Malaysia can truly be called MALAYsia or 'MALAYland'. ;-)

Expect petrol price to come down next month!!! - www.malaysiakini.com

Malaysians can expect another drop in petrol prices next month before the Kuala Terengganu by-election on Jan 17 but according to PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar, this would not stop the voters in Kuala Terenggau from voting for the opposition. Mahfuz, who is also Pokok Sena member of parliament, said during the Permatang Pauh by-election on Aug 26, petrol prices were reduced by 15 sen but the people still voted for PKR’s Anwar Ibrahim..."The trend since the general election has been for the people to continue supporting the opposition. This tendency will continue," the PAS information chief told Malaysiakini today...Mafuz said another point of confidence PAS had for winning Kuala Terengganu was that it had won three state seats within the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituency...Mahfuz also expressed confidence that the non-Malay voters would support the PAS candidate. (Source: Malaysiakini). No doubt that the political landscape in Malaysia has changed. Nevertheless, Pakatan Rakyat should not be over confident in this KT by-election. The strategy in the last general that saw only one-to-one contests with BN (either PKR, PAS or DAP against BN) had worked well. Hopefully, PR will once again work well to win!!

Onn Jaafar, from Umno founder to opposition hero! YEAH! - www.malaysiakini.com

Abdul Hadi Awang is confident that Chinese voters will swing behind the party in next month’s Kuala Terengganu by-election as they had previously benefitted from four years of PAS rule. "When I was menteri besar (of Terengganu), we remove the assessment rates for property owners. However, when Umno came back to power, it brought back the assessment rates," said the PAS president...Hadi also pointed out that Umno founder Onn Jaafar had contested in Kuala Terengganu after he left the ruling party. "Do you know Onn Jaafar won in Kuala Terengganu as an opposition candidate? He did not get the support from Umno and he did not contest in Johor (his home state). "Nevertheless, the people of Kuala Terengganu elected him to represent them in Parliament. This time around, we are confident that voters in Kuala Terengganu would support us," Hadi said. (Hadi confident Chinese will vote PAS in KT - Malaysiakini)
Hmm...Interesting to note that Onn Jaafar, the founder of Umno, got kicked out of Umno and won as an opposition candidate! A true rakyat fighther indeed! Do you also know that he is the grandfather of Hishammuddin Hussein, the Education Minister, famous for his keris-wielding act?

Mike and KP Samy out to oust Samy Vellu? - www.malaysiakini.com

Malaysiakini exclusive Two unrelated political developments on the ground are primed to pile the pressure on long-time MIC chief S Samy Vellu to relinquish his iron grip on the party which claims to represent the Indian community...First, the Manikavasagam situation. While it has been reported that Manikavasagam will be quitting PKR by next week following growing frustrations with the party leadership, he however told Malaysiakini that he would be stepping down from his two party posts on Dec 31, but would however remain as party member...However, sources from within and outside MIC told Malaysiakini that plans are afoot to bring Manikavasagam into the Indian-based party...While this plan involving Manikavasagam is taking shape, another MIC grassroots leader is taking it on his own to oust Samy Vellu. Businessman KP Samy, a long-time ally of former deputy president S Subramaniam, is expected to form a movement that would incorporate all sacked or suspended MIC leaders. Interesting plans indeed. I think Mani (or popularly known as 'Mike'?) should just stick to his decision of becoming an independent MP as reported in The Star. There is no point to oust Samy Vellu. KP Samy knows better! Let him resign humbly like Tun Dr M lah. Don't make him look 'badder' than he already is. ;)

Another hanky-panky in Umno vice-president race? - www.malaysiakini.com

Umno supreme council member Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik has finally made the cut to contest one of the three vice-president posts at the party polls in March. Rahim, 58, who is former Malacca chief minister from 1982 to 1994 and former Umno Youth chief, obtained his 20th nomination from the Seremban Umno division meeting which was held today...With Rahim being the last man to qualify, nine candidates will now contest for the three vice-presidents post in March...Rahim resigned as Malacca chief minister and Umno Youth chief in 1992 in the wake of a sex scandal involving an underage girl. He denied the allegation and then attorney-general Moktar Abdullah later announced there were “insufficient evidence” against him. (Source: Malaysiakini) I wonder if there is any 'hanky-panky' going on as in the deputy president race ('Hanky-panky' in Umno deputy president race: Dr M - The Star Online). Dr M said, “There is a lot of hanky-panky. When you know someone with a very bad history is still getting support there is a strong possibility that money politics is involved because, somehow, someone has come from very far behind to keep up. Rahim has a very bad history of sex scandal that got the current CM of Penang, Lim Guan Eng, into jail.

Zahar is PAS Christmas eve gift - www.malaysiakini.com

Former Umno Petaling Jaya Selatan division leader Zahar Hashim, who had alleged discrepancies in the RM1.6 billion Eurocopter deal, joined the opposition PAS today. The retired army captain submitted his application to PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa at a function held in a hotel in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. The function is featured in Malaysiakini.TV - The video clip started with Selangor PAS chief Hasan Ali who said, 'Ask any PAS member for what he joins PAS, the reason is not to get projects, to increase the number of Mercedes Benz or improve the economic status of my family...but for the pleasure of God.' On his reasons to join PAS, Zahar said he had been thinking about this for some time now, especially after the March general election. He also said he had lost respect for the Umno leaders who had failed to protect the interests of the Malays. (Malaysiakini: Eurocopter whistleblower joins PAS)

I must say quite a convincing 'starter' speech. No doubt PAS is seen as a way-much-cleaner party. I don't think any party is free of corruption. IF that is so, then that party can claim to be God. On another note, PAS must be seen to be fair to all races and religions - not just the Malay Muslims. 8|

Toyota: First-ever operating loss and no sales-forecast announcement - www.malaysiakini.com

Toyota Motor Corp today forecast its first-ever operating loss this year as the global slowdown creates "an unprecedented crisis" for the long profitable automaker. Toyota's sharp cuts in forecasts marked a deepening of the woes plaguing the auto industry, which has seen General Motors and Chrysler, two of the US Big Three automakers, on the verge of collapse due to the global financial turmoil..."The company is facing an unprecedented crisis where it cannot avoid posting an operating deficit in this term," Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe told a news conference at the company's hub in central Japan...For the first time, Toyota did not announce a sales forecast for the next financial year. "The markets are changing every week and even every day. Unfortunately we cannot forecast our business performance for the next year at this point," Watanabe said. "It is extremely difficult to read the conditions of the global markets now." (Source: Malaysiakini).
Indeed, we are living in very challenging times. Malaysia will not be spared the economic woes despite the 'reassurances' from the government that semuanya OK. Of course, the majority of the rakyat will not buy the sweet talk. Why is it hard for the government to come clean on the real hard fact of our economy?

Melamine milk scandal: Death penalty if convicted - www.malaysiakini.com

The former head of the Chinese firm at the centre of the tainted milk scandal, who will stand trial next week, could face the death penalty if convicted. The trial of Tian Wenhua, previously the chairwoman of Sanlu Group, will open Wednesday at a court in Sanlu's home city, Shijiazhuang in north China's Hebei province, an official with a provincial court told AFP..."In the most serious scenario where there are death reports, the penalty is imprisonment of at least 10 years, life sentence or even death," said Beijing-based lawyer Li Xiongbing...The Chinese government has reported that in addition to the six children known to have died from the melamine, another 294,000 were sickened from drinking baby formula laced with the chemical. The scandal shocked China and tarnished the reputation of its food industry far beyond its borders, as it appeared the melamine was mixed into the milk on purpose to make it appear richer in protein than it was. (Source: Malaysiakini) To me, death penalty is the only 'sensible' sentence. It will serve as a grim reminder to food manufacturers to strictly adhere to ethics. Also, it will show that the Chinese government is serious about 'cleaning up' the food industry tainted by the melamine-laced milk...

Madoff scandal: First suicide victim, more to follow? - www.malaysiakini.com

A French investment manager who plowed US$2.1 billion into Bernard Madoff's fraudulent scheme was found dead in his New York office, in what a friend says was a suicide. An autopsy was to be performed on Wednesday on Thierry de la Villehuchet, 65, who was found dead shortly after 7am (8pm Malaysian time) on Tuesday by a security officer of the Madison Avenue building that housed his Access International investment concern, according to the New York police department. Villehuchet, co-founder and chief executive of Access International, which invested funds for the cream of Europe's high society, was both an investor in and apparent victim of Madoff, a former Wall Street pillar now accused of running a multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme...After the scam was revealed on Dec 11, Villehuchet was "crushed" and feared that his clients would sue him, the friend said. (Malaysiakini: Madoff investor kills himself after massive losses). For more info, read cbsnews

Will there be more sad stories as police continue their probe into the scam? So sad that good people had been fleeced by greedy people. The American Dream is no longer the American Dream. So sad.

Since when Sarawak is a sovereign state? - www.malaysiakini.com

Malaysiakini latest news: MP denied entry into Sarawak updated 10.11pm PKR parliamentarian N Gobalakrishnan, MP for Padang Serai, has been denied entry into Sarawak by immigration officers at the Kuching International airport. According to him, the incident happened at around 5.30pm and he believed that it was politically motivated. "The moment I reached the airport, immigration officers told me that I am not allowed to enter due to instructions from the state government," he told Malaysiakini. "The immigration officer gave me a notice which reads 'Tuan bukan rakyat Sarawak, tidak berhak untuk masuk ke Sarawak tanpa permit atau pas Akta Imigresen 1959-1963' (You are not a citizen of Sarawak and are not eligible to enter Sarawak without a permit or immigration pass)...According to the MP, he was barred because he had defended a fellow parliamentarian who questioned the role of a company belonging to the state government in the Dewan Rakyat last week. Eh, funny. That means I also cannot enter Sarawak though I am a Malaysian? That means I must be a citizen of Sarawak first? Since when Sarawak is a sovereign state? What's happening here? Come to think of it, Sarawak is better off on her own. ;-)

Another HORNY MCA-linked Chinese OLD MAN??? - www.malaysiakini.com

Prominent Chinese education activist Loot Ting Yee on Sunday announced his resignation from all his posts following a sexual harassment allegation against him by a girl. The alleged victim had made the claim on her blog. In a brief statement to the media, Loot said, "I am deeply disturbed over allegations of my offensive or disrespectful behaviour and language against some females. I hereby offer my unreserved apology to these victims." Loot, 80, said he was giving up his advisory posts in Jiao Zong (United Chinese School Teachers Association) and the Lim Lean Geok (LLG) Cultural Development Centre, as he didn't want to create unnecessary trouble for these organizations...LLG Cultural Development Centre president Zhou Shou Han rebutted attempts by bloggers to discredit the anti-English campaign by tying it up to Loot's alleged sexual misconduct. (Source: Malaysiakini)
Though I haven't heard of Loot until now, I think he had done the right thing - to resign. He's lucky that he does not have any police report made against him. I wonder why prominent Chinese old men are so horny? Early this year, we have Dr. Chua. End of this year, Mr. Loot. What a shame! ;-)

Selangor set to be a disabled-friendly state - www.malaysiakini.com

Imagine a disabled person trying to get in and out of the car in pouring rain. It's hard enough for a person carrying an umbrella but even harder if he or she is on wheelchair. Recognising this problem, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) today launched the first sheltered parking space for the disabled at its headquarters. The parking space is located next to the building's main entrance with the shelter extending to the nearby wheelchair ramp. Speaking at the launch, wheelchair-bound MBPJ councillor Anthony Thanasayan lauded the creation of the special parking space...Thanasayan, who heads the council’s disabled expert committee, also welcomed the shift in mindset regarding the disabled...The MBPJ plans to create 150 specially designated parking spaces which will be located around the Petaling Jaya area. The council hopes to fit at least 20 of these parking spaces with shelters. (Source: Malaysiakini)

Indeed, there is a need for a shift in mindset of an ordinary bloke regarding the disabled and it goes beyond having more disabled-friendly facilities. All of us know that these facilities are sometimes abused by non-disabled people. Thus, I think punishment ought to be meted out to these abusers.

This photo attests to the fact that there are abusers.

School caught in between two chauvinistic Chinese camps - www.malaysiakini.com

The Damansara Chinese primary school - reopened after eight years - remains at the centre of a tussle for political mileage between MCA and DAP. Deputy Education Minister Wee Ka Siong yesterday officiated at a ceremony to unveil the school's new name - SRK(C) Chung Hwa Damansara, taken from a school being relocated from Perak. Wee said SJK(C) Subang assistant principal Bai Chun Mei will head the school, which will have 11 teachers for the 111 students already registered... However, the presence of some 20 DAP supporters - holding banners in front of the school - took the shine off the ceremony. The protesters, accompanied by Selangor exco member Ronnie Liu, interrupted Wee's speech to urge the government to ensure that the school was given back to the community in a good condition...After the ceremony, Liu went on stage and alleged that the primary school was not being ‘reopened' as claimed, but merely being used to accommodate the relocated school. (Source: Malaysiakini) Man, such a pity and shame for these Chinese to fight with each other. I doubt the sincerity of MCA, a Chinese party and DAP, a Chinese-dominated party. There are more pressing issues than to fight for a Chinese school, silly!

DAP = Dayak Action Party? - www.malaysiakini.com

The opposition DAP, largely seen as Chinese-based and Chinese-oriented, is moving into Dayak areas in Sarawak. Bukit Assek state assemblyperson Wong Ho Leng, who heads Sarawak DAP, said the plan was approved last month. Two predominantly-Iban branches have been set up in Sibu Jaya and Sungai Merah, and these recently held a meeting to elect office-bearers in Sibu. A third branch approved outside Sibu is in Bintangor Scheme B in the Lower Rajang area. In a statement, Wong said more branches will be formed in rural areas in the coming months. "(This shows that) we are not (merely) content to work in Chinese areas. We are determined to go rural and to see improvement in the lives of all (communities), in particular the economically (challenged) Dayaks. "These areas should have DAP Iban leaders to serve them. They should go for change (by booting out the Barisan Nasional)." (Source: Malaysiakini)

Perhaps, DAP will soon be known as Dayak Action Party instead of Democratic Action Party. Mahathir was right to say, 'We need an opposition.' Hopefully, the opposition will form the gov't. 8-)

PR government vs BN opposition in Penang - www.malaysiakini.com

Nearly nine months after being sworn in as the chief minister of Penang, Lim Guan Eng has admitted it was tough going for him in his new role but vowed he would not be cowed by anyone except by the people who put him in power. Pakatan Rakyat, the opposition alliance in power in five states, and the Barisan Nasional are worlds apart in their politics, he told the Daily Express in an interview in Kota Kinabalu recently. Lim, who has been under pressure by Umno in particular over various issues "without success", had not surprisingly more brickbats than bouquets for BN leaders, especially Umno, the federal government and Petronas...Among other BN leaders, he singled out Tourism Minister Azalina Othman as "the worst" of the Umno leaders...The CM cited his administration's immediate goals as the eradication of hardcore poverty by next year, make Penang a wifi state and turn it into an international city, and combat corruption. (Source: Mkini)

At least, power has not gone into Lim's head. He knows he is in the seat of power because of the rakyat. Also, he should know better that opposition will always be there. I wish him all the best! 8)

Government has paused heartbeat of rakyat - www.malaysiakini.com

Much has been blogged and commented on the takeover of IJN. It drew a lot of 'opposition' right from the first day the Gov't gave green light to IJN privatisation (Source: Malaysiakini). The next day, the IJN specialists issued a statement saying that they would prefer the institute to stay in its present form, which is directly funded by the government. They added that the medical personnel were not at all involved in the negotiations for the proposed takeover. Also, on that same day, the Cabinet hit pause button on IJN sale (Source: Malaysiakini). Read 'pause'. It means 'postpone'. So, the sale is temporarily stopped. Two days ago, Malaysiakini reported two unions had lauded the government’s move to defer the privatisation plan of the National Heart Institute (IJN),
MCPX
Bernama
reported today but the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) also wants the government to scrap altogether the idea of allowing conglomerate Sime Darby Bhd to buy a 51 per cent stake in the country's premier heart institute.
As the saying goes, "The majority is not always right." Unfortunately, in this case, the majority is the rakyat and always right. Thus, the IJN must carry on to give its service to the majority rakyat.

Special squad to catch wild-boar-head criminal - www.malaysiakini.com

A wild boar head was found hanging next to a banner advertising an event organised by Majlis Permuafakatan Ummah (Pewaris) last Thursday. The banner, which was hung on the fence of Sekolah Kebangsaan Pengkalan Balak in Malacca, highlighted issues concerning the Malay community, including the issue of a pig farm in Paya Menkuang...Meanwhile, the Pewaris event which was held at the Samudera Riverside Hotel in Majlis Tanah earlier today, culminated in the burning of a pig effigy in the hotel compound. The move was in protest of the pig farm in Paya Mengkuang. Thursday’s incident was the third one this year involving animal carcasses. Malacca police chief, Mazlan Mansor has issued a stern warning against those behind the incidents, adding that a special squad has been established to investigate the latest incident. However, no arrests have been made so far. (Source: Wild boar head hung on school gate - Malaysiakini)

Wow! A special squad to catch the wild-boar-head criminal. I wonder if any special squad has been set up to catch snatch thieves or 'terrorists' who threw molotov cocktail at Teresa's family home. 8|

Will food price fall with falling fuel price? - www.malaysiakini.com

Malaysia's inflation eased to 5.7 percent in November from 7.6 percent the month before due to the falling price of fuel, according to official data released today. The Department of Statistics said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January to November had risen by 5.5 percent. Consumer prices rose 2.0 percent on average last year. The central bank has tipped inflation to average 5.5-6.0 percent this year...The government cut fuel prices twice in November as the price of crude plummeted from record highs earlier this year. There have been another two cuts in December, bringing pump prices down to RM1.80 ringgit per litre.A 41 percent price hike in June saw prices go up to RM2.70 sparking angry street protests and calls for Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to resign. June's hike saw inflation soar, with the August price index reaching a 27-year high of 8.5 percent, also driven by the escalating cost of food and transportation. (Source: Malaysiakini - Inflation eases as fuel costs tumble)
The price of fuel has fallen. Hopefully, we'll see the price of food to follow suit. Good news for those who pump and drive. After all, Malaysians generally don't mind driving all the way for good food. ;)

Lobbying is merely talking...Dr M also talking only - www.malaysiakini.com

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad today backed his son Mukhriz's allegation that the Bar Council had lobbied for the appointment of judges during the former’s tenure..."Yes, there was lobbying, there were people (from the Bar Council) that lobbied (for the appointment of judges) but whether or not I appointed them is a different story. "There were people who talked (so the lobbying did take place) but indirectly-lah" he told reporters at a press conference held after attending an event in Kuala Lumpur....On another matter, Mahathir welcomed the government's decision to defer the proposed sale of the National Heart Institute to Sime Darby. He said it was a good decision as the specialist hospital "holds a special place in the hearts of the public." In another development, Mahathir reiterated that he does not have enough evidence to name the Umno members involved in money politics. (Dr M: Yes, they lobbied for judicial appointments - Mkini)

Indirectly, on the alleged lobbying, Mahathir also does not have enough evidence. So, why talk about it? Ultimately, he still had the discretionary power to appoint even if the lobbying did happen.

Does the Health Ministry care? - www.malaysiakini.com

The government has been lambasted for playing down the ongoing dengue epidemic in the country which has so far resulted in 100 deaths and over 45,000 cases. DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang labelled this as the worst dengue outbreak in the country and accused the government, especially the Health Ministry, of indulging in a conspiracy of silence. "It came as a shock to me, as it must be to all Malaysians, that 100 lives have been lost to dengue in the first 50 weeks of this year," he said in a statement today. He also lamented that the media too had failed to report the situation. Lim was responding to the latest dengue statistics released by the director of the Health Ministry's Disease Control Division Dr Hassan Abdul Rahman yesterday. Hassan confirmed that two more people had succumbed to the dengue fever last week, bringing the number of fatal cases in the country to 100. (Dengue outbreak: A conspiracy at work? - Malaysiakini)

Shocked? I'm shocked but not shocked at the same time. I think the Health Ministry is not interested, much less care about the health of the nation. Perhaps, it's busy with politics? I wonder.

Too many implications? Who will be implicated? - www.malaysiakini.com

The Public Works Department (JKR) has refused to hand over its Bukit Antarabangsa landslide report to the Selangor government to the chagrin of Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim...He said that the JKR's action in ignoring the state government would only be detrimental to the victims. According to sources, PWD revealed its decision on the matter to the state government this afternoon. However, the department did not provide a detailed explanation on its refusal apart from stating that "there were too many implications" if the report is handed to Abdul Khalid. Meanwhile, the state exco member Elizabeth Wong said that JKR had pledged to send the report to the state government during a closed-door meeting with affected residents and families of the deceased on Dec 14...It is believed that Works Minister Mohd Zin Mohamad would announce the report tomorrow after it is tabled before the cabinet. (Source: Malaysiakini)

So, looks like there's something to hide since "there were too many implications"? Who will be implicated? Will the report be 'dressed up' to make it look presentable or will all the facts be bared?

Confirm no more corruption in Malaysia! - www.malaysiakini.com

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today said he was happy that his two ‘reform' Bills have been passed in the Parliament without having to undergo constitutional amendments. Saying that the two ‘reform' Bills were very "significant", he said this also showed that the Barisan Nasional government led by him was not as weak as claimed by some quarters. (So, is that the reason for the two 'reforms' Bills to be rushed and passed, just to show that the BN government is not weak?) Abdullah's comments tonight came amid criticisms from within his own BN coalition and the opposition MPs, as well as from interest groups, who questioned JAC's constitutionality if it was passed without amending the federal constitution. Abdullah first Bill - for the formation of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission - was passed yesterday..."With the setting up of these commissions, we won't have any corruption and even if there are, it will be very little (kalau ada pun sikit sangat)," argued Abdullah. (I wonder on what basis Pak Lah made that statement. Does he not know that there's no foolproof system in this world? If really minimal corruption, sure Malaysia can achieve Vision 2020. Dr M need not to worry.) Source: Mkini. My comment in blue.

Snippets from the house on 16.12.08 - www.malaysiakini.com

Parliament Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia today denied there was any petition from backbenchers over how two 'reform' Bills are being rushed through. This, among other snippets from the House today..."I never received any letter," Pandikar said when met by reporters at the Parliament lobby. (Again, denial?) When met, BN Backbenchers Club chairperson Tiong King Sing also denied the claim and said there was no unhappiness over the short time frame, up to four days, allocated to debate the Bills. (Again, second denial?) What is the connection between the proposed MACC and lawyer VK Lingam's brother, V Thirunama Karasu, as well as the lawyer's former secretary GN Jeyanthi? The duo, who testified in the royal commission of inquiry on the infamous ‘Lingam tape' earlier this year, were present at an opposition press conference at the Parliament lobby today to stress that the MACC needs to be serious in its enforcement...Veteran lawyer Karpal Singh has written to the Chief Justice Zaki Azmi asking the latter to step down after the judiciary's No 1 apparently admitted to corrupt practices while in private practice...Copies of the letter were distributed to the media in a press conference by Karpal at the Parliament lobby this morning. (May I have a copy of the letter too, Mr. Karpal or can Malaysiakini have it published?)

IPF in. PPP out? - Malaysiakini.TV

Kuala Lumpur, Dec 15: The Indian Progressive Front could be joining the ranks of Barisan Nasional after a 20-year wait.

This was revealed by BN and Umno sec-gen, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor when he attended IPF's assembly yesterday.

IPF was formed by former MIC vice-president MG Pandithan who passed away on April 30th this year after a long illness. The acting president has since been Pandithan's wife, Jayashree.

The Assembly wasn't without controversy however as about 150 members caused a commotion at the entrance to the hotel where the meeting was being held. Amongst other things protesters displayed their disatisfaction with the party leadership claiming that acting president Jayashree, is not Malaysian.

At the press conference Jayashree said that it is only a few members who are unhappy because of the disciplinary action taken against some members for breaching party rules.

Big MACC doesn't bite - www.malaysiakini.com

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim today gave conditional support to the proposed Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Bill. He however expressed reservations to several provisions of the Bill, touted as part of the prime minister's reform agenda...Anwar clarified that his support comes with several reservations, particularly because the MACC does not hold any prosecutory powers..., adding that ACA has been asking for the power to prosecute since its formation. He argued that the commission's integrity may be compromised because of complaints of irregularities and abuse of power that have been made against the AG's Chambers. Citing an example, Anwar claimed that he was told by reliable sources that ACA found a case against AG Abdul Gani Patail in relation to the alleged fabrication of evidence in his (Anwar's) 'black eye' incident 10 years ago. (Source: Malaysiakini)

Nobody is perfect. Thus, no one is above the law. So who will prosecute the AG if there's a case against him? Hence, it only makes sense for MACC to hold the prosecutory powers but then again, all of us know the government will protect itself first, then only the rakyat. ;)

Sarawak understanding. How about federal government? - www.malaysiakini.com

Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairperson Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today opened the Sarawak United People's Party's (Supp) 21st triennial delegates conference in Kuching in a somewhat subdued atmosphere because of the current economic gloom...The Supp chief, Dr George Chan, told the PM that he hoped more funds for development could come as increased allocations under the Malaysia Development Plan or in the form of increased royalties from oil and gas revenue. Chan said he realised the federal government's present financial position and that Sarawak would continue to be understanding...In his 25-minute speech, Abdullah, in responding to the request for additional funding for development projects in Sarawak, said there were worrying economic indicators but reiterated the government's belief the country would not go into recession on the basis that it had introduced a RM7 billion stimulus package. (Source: Malaysiakini)

The Sarawak government has been understanding towards the federal government for a long time. Supp had spoken up for Sarawak. Will the fed government continue to abuse this understanding? ;)

First Thailand, now Taiwan. Next Malaysia?

Thailand's ex-premier Thaksin sent to two years in prison for corruption.

Taiwan's ex-president Chen indicted for corruption.

Taiwan's former president Chen Shui-bian was indicted yesterday for corruption, just months after finishing eight years in office marked by a pro-independence agenda that badly damaged ties with China. Legal experts say Chen, the island's first former leader to be indicted, could face life in prison if convicted on the charges of corruption and money laundering. His wife and son were also indicted in the sweeping case. Chen, who pledged to clean up Taiwanese politics when he was elected in 2000, left office in May after serving the maximum two terms as president.

Like Chen, Pak Lah also pledged to clean up the house right from day one when he entered office. No show so far. In Malaysia, corruption is an open secret. Hard to prove it seems. So just let it be. ;)

Five fellows in public hall of shame still hope to clear their names! - www.malaysiakini.com

The Kuala Lumpur High Court’s Special Powers and Appellate division has ruled that the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Lingam clip cannot be challenged. Justice Abdul Kadir Musa consequently threw out the leave application by prominent lawyer VK Lingam and four others with costs. On July 16, senior federal counsel Azizah Nawawi had objected to the leave application by Lingam, tycoon Vincent Tan, Barisan Nasional and Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and former chief justices Eusoff Chin and Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim for the judicial review...Abdul Kadir, in his 22-page judgment delivered this morning, noted that the royal commission had conducted the inquiry via a public hearing between Jan 14, 2008 and Feb 15, 2008, and submitted the findings to the Agong. He said the report was then transmitted to the government which decided to make the report public on May 20. (Source: Malaysiakini - Inquiry findings 'cannot be challenged')

These five fellows in the public hall of shame still hope to clear their names. Too bad-too lil-too late.

Why some people have all the luck?

By Professor Richard Wiseman, University of Hertfordshire

Why do some people get all the luck while others never get the breaks they
deserve?

A psychologist says he has discovered the answer.

Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people
are always in the right place at the right time, while others consistently
experience ill fortune. I placed advertisements in national newspapers
asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky to contact me.

Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research and over
the years, I have interviewed them, monitored their lives and had them take
part in experiments.

The results reveal that although these people have almost no insight into
the causes of their luck, their thoughts and behaviour are responsible for
much of their good and bad fortune. Take the case of seemingly chance
opportunities. Lucky people consistently encounter such opportunities,
whereas unlucky people do not.

I carried out a simple experiment to discover whether this was due to
differences in their ability to spot such opportunities. I gave both lucky
and unlucky people a newspaper, and asked them to look through it and tell
me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message
halfway through the newspaper saying: "Tell the experimenter you have seen
this and win $50."

This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more
than two inches high. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but the
unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.

Unlucky people are generally more tense than lucky people, and this anxiety
disrupts their ability to notice the unexpected.

As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking
for something else. They go to parties' intent on finding their perfect
partner and so miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through
newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and miss
other types of jobs. The lucky ones make the best of what they have and find
ways to make it better. Unlucky ones tend to find an easy way out and fail
in life.

Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there
rather than just what they are looking for. My research eventually revealed
that lucky people generate good fortune via four principles. They are
skilled at creating and noticing chance opportunities, make lucky decisions
by listening to their intuition, create self-fulfilling prophesies via
positive expectations, and adopt a resilient attitude that transforms bad
luck into good.

Towards the end of the work, I wondered whether these principles could be
used to create good luck. I asked a group of volunteers to spend a month
carrying out exercises designed to help them think and behave like a lucky
person.

Dramatic results! These exercises helped them spot chance opportunities,
listen to their intuition, expect to be lucky, and be more resilient to bad
luck. One month later, the volunteers returned and described what had
happened. The results were dramatic: 80% of people were now happier, more
satisfied with their lives and, perhaps most important of all, luckier.

The lucky people had become even luckier and the unlucky had become lucky.

Finally, I had found the elusive "luck factor".

Here are Professor Wiseman's four top tips for becoming lucky:

1) Listen to your gut instincts - they are normally right

2) Be open to new experiences and find ways to make things work better.
Family and loved ones for a start.

3) Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well

4) Visualize yourself being lucky before an important meeting or telephone
call.

Have a Lucky day and work for it.

The happiest people in the world are not those who have no problems, but those who learn to live with things that are less than perfect.

Personally, I would define 'luck' as 'blessed'. So, yeah. Life is all about ups and downs! 8) Up or down, I choose to be happy! Woooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooooooo! 8D

Landslide survivor wants landslide victory for opposition! - www.malaysiakini.com

A furious Ungku Farid Ungku Abdul, 54, did not hesitate in identifying the cause - and culprits - of last Saturday’s landslide in Bukit Antarabangsa. “We are victims of the corruption in Malaysia,” alleged Farid, a businessman, whose house was one of the 14 destroyed in the incident...Unlike other residents who have signaled intent to sue the authorities, Farid said he can only afford to raise his questions and demands before the public. However, he also said it is within his capacity to try and prevent similar incidents. Among his first steps will be to ensure that politicians - like those who approved the development projects in Bukit Antarabangsa - are not placed in decision making positions. Asked what this means in concrete terms, Farid said he would start by campaigning against Umno in the upcoming Kuala Terengganu by-election by telling voters the dangers of keeping the party in power. (Malaysiakini - Landslide survivor: We are victims of corruption)

Finally, a citizen is awaken from a deep sleep. This time, he must be MAD. That's why he wants to Make A Difference. He knows that being indifferent will not change the status quo. Time for action!

ACA probe almost done but will the AG act? - www.malaysiakini.com

The Anti-Corruption Agency aims to wrap up by year-end its investigations into cases of money politics that allegedly took place during the recent Umno divisional elections across the country. Its investigation unit director, Mohd Shukri Abdul, revealed that the probe into the vote-buying allegations is about 90 percent completed, and is optimistic that it will be wrapped up within the next three weeks...So far, some 90 ACA investigation papers have been opened based on allegations from sources on various forms of corrupt practices during the Umno's month-long divisional elections from Oct 9...Money politics has been such a bane in Umno that vice-president Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin and former president and ex-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad have warned that, if left unchecked, corruption would decimate the party by the next general election. (Source: Malaysiakini - ACA probe on Umno money politics almost completed)

I wonder if one of the 90 ACA investigation papers opened is related to the report lodge by Mazlan Harun against the PM and DPM. I guess it will not see the light of the day.

By the way, Chedet also wondered about Mazlan's report. Snippets from his blog post:
Corruption Report

1. Wonder what has happened to Mazlan Harun's report to the Anti Corruption Agency regarding corrupt acts by Dato Seri Abdullah and Dato Seri Najib, President and Deputy President respectively of UMNO.

2. According to Kadar Shah the report had also been made to the party but he did not think the party would act. It would incriminate the leaders of the party itself.

3. Previously when UMNO members in my former division of Kubang Pasu came with evidence that money was used to persuade the delegates not to vote for me, the case was dismissed by the UMNO Disciplinary Committee even though clear evidence were presented that they had been paid money not to vote for me.

Grandparents love

Yesterday, I sms my dad:
Have you and mom visited Janson at the nanny's house?

Instead of replying my sms with a 'yes' or 'no', he said:
Janson is a good boy;v all love him very much.

My heart was warmed.
Ahh...Grandparents love.

Mkini, Dr M and Anwar: All top in Google fastest rising survey - www.malaysiakini.com

Malaysiakini is the fastest rising searched website in Malaysia in the year 2008, according to search engine giant Google. Its yearly survey of “the largest spike in searches during 2008 compared to 2007" has seen Malaysiakini beat social networking website Facebook, PAS party organ Harakah and private television station TV3...There were 10 ‘fasting rising’ categories in the survey, which Google coined Zeitgeist meaning ‘the spirit of the times’ in German. “Google reveals this spirit through the aggregation of millions of search queries we receive every day,” it said in a statement issued today...Topping the category for fastest rising personality search was Permatang Pauh MP and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, who Google said even beat out US presidential-elect Barack Obama “in a year that saw local and global politics take center stage”. (Source: Malaysiakini - Mkini is fastest rising search in 2008)

The one who tops the fastest rising blogs/bloggers is perhaps the oldest blogger around. He's none other than Dr M's Chedet. I've got to put my hat off to the old man - an epitome of lifelong learning.

PM for reforms for himself - www.malaysiakini.com

For all its heralded claims of independence, the proposed Judicial Appointments Council (JAC) will remain very much under the thumb of the prime minister in recommending the appointment and promotion of judges. Based on the 23-page JAC Bill tabled in Parliament for first reading this morning, the premier will have far-reaching powers from the appointment of commission members to the selection of judges. He can revoke the appointment of anyone in the nine-member JAC at any time without having to give a reason...All this comes despite the fact that the commission is meant to overcome current perceptions of undue influence by the executive in judicial appointments. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who tabled the bill personally in the Dewan Rakyat, is seeking its passage by the end of the current session next Thursday. (Source: Malaysiakini - JAC to remain firmly under PM's thumb)

Pak Lah was seen as a man who wanted reforms but then again, looks like the reforms are personally for himself. If JAC becomes a reality, the PM has the final say from A 2 Z. Scary enough!

Real reason for landslide??? It's easy to find out - www.malaysiakini.com

There is no clear evidence to show that the landslide in Bukit Antarabangsa was a result of human negligence, said Housing and Local Gov't Minister Ong Ka Chuan today...However, Ong said a meeting would be held this evening involving government agencies such as the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, the Public Works Department and the local council to determine the real reason behind the landslip...Also, Parliament was told today, a total of 99 hillside projects had been approved by the Selangor gov't under then menteri besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo...According to Khalid, 21 of the on-going projects are under the jurisdiction of Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, with 10 in Bukit Antarabangsa - the upmarket suburb which was hit by a deadly landslide on Saturday - and 11 in nearby Taman Melawati...In the meantime, Malaysiakini reported that Govt spends RM6 mil on PM's official residence. (Source: Malaysiakini)

I think there is no need to find out the real reason - it's pretty obvious with 99 hillside projects approved by the former S'gor gov't while Pak Lah lives luxuriously. It's all about money, isn't it? ;-)

Only Umno matters. Not MCA, MIC nor PPP - www.malaysiakini.com

In an interview with The Sun recently, Abdullah said, "I should have started these (reforms) earlier," he admitted, but later conceded that "if Umno doesn’t want me, what can the 90% do?" when the interviewers opined that he had not capitalised on the 90% mandate he received in the 2004 polls to push for his reforms.

Today, in Malaysiakini, he told PPP off, saying,
"We have no plans to amend (the ISA)... if that is their choice (to leave), what can we do," he told a press conference after chairing the BN supreme council meeting at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur. Last week, PPP president M Kayveas had urged the government to amend the security law before the next general elections, failing which, he warned that his party will pull out of the ruling coalition. (Source: Malaysiakini)

After Pak Lah got the 90% mandate, he said he was the PM for all Malaysians. Now we know 90% Umno support for him is paramount. 9% from all other BN component parties. 1% from the rakyat.

No-nonsense Elizabeth issues a warning - www.malaysiakini.com

Selangor state assemblyperson Elizabeth Wong has warned all hillside developers and land owners to reinforce their sites or face the risk of being blacklisted by the state...The opposition ruled Selangor made a strict policy decision on April 2 to ban development projects on slopes having a gradient of 25 degrees and above, technically referred to as Class 3 and Class 4 slopes to protect environmentally sensitive areas. "Developers thought it was a late April Fool's joke. Since our ban, they have used all means - the media, blogs, lobbying of Aduns and MPs etcetera... to change our minds. "We were labelled and vilified as 'anti-business' and 'anti-development'... I have even had some of our Pakatan MPs asking us to make exceptions for Class 3," said Wong. (Malaysiakini: Reinforce hill projects or face backlist) Alternatively, click here to read Elizabeth's post in her blog.

Looks like currently, Selangor is the only state to take a tough stand against projects that pose a danger to the environment. Nevertheless, sad to know that Pakatan MPs themselves had asked for the stand to be 'softened'. Hmm...I wonder "where's the beef" in it for these MPs. I really wonder...

Beware! Fake RM10

Can you tell the difference?

The search has stopped. What now?

The police have ordered residents from a condominium tower located near the landslide site in Bukit Antarabangsa to evacuate immediately. According to Bernama, Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said that there were fears that the building "may collapse at any time". The Public Works Department has found the area where the Kyoto Garden Condominium is located to be risky. The condo sits on a hillside near the landslide area. The disaster hit early yesterday, burying 14 houses at the upmarket suburb in northeast Kuala Lumpur, cutting off access for thousands of residents and disrupting water, electricity and phone lines. Among the four dead was a 20-year-old who was found by his father buried under the rubble still clutching a mobile phone, the Star reported. The search and rescue operation ended at 4.30pm today when the 500-strong team confirmed that there were no more victims buried in the landslide. (Soure: Malaysiakini)

Now that the search had ended, will the government seriously end all present and future hillside projects that have 'landslide potential'...oops the PM said no more hillside developments. Really ah?

Will Khan do another movie in Melaka? - www.malaysiakini.com

India's top Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan will star in a new movie exploring the issue of Islam in the post 9/11 world and the misperception that all Muslims are terrorists. "My Name is Khan" tells the story of six people with Muslim surnames who suffer suspicion and prejudice years after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. "The movie is about a Muslim person's strife (in telling) people that 'my name is Khan but I am not a terrorist'," Khan told reporters after being conferred the governors' award in Malacca in recognition of his 2001 film "One 2 Ka 4", which was set there and boosted its profile as a tourist destination..."Islam does not in any which way tell you to be violent," he said. "I think the whole concept of jihad, the whole concept of warring needs to be explained as Allah meant it to be in the Koran," Khan said. (Source: Malaysiakini)

Indeed. No religion teaches or tells its followers to be violent. Only followers who have deviated from the truth and follow their own willful way - their evil desire in the name of religion. Maybe Datuk Shah Rukh Khan can also change the perception that Malaysia is a hub for Islamic terrorists.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF - Landslide at Hulu Kelang - www.malaysiakini.com

History repeats itself. Another landslide at Hulu Kelang. The online media is now abuzz with the news of the latest landslide tragedy at Bukit Antarabangsa.

Needless to say, Malaysiakini has the breaking news updated 9.35am A massive landslide at 4 this morning buried eight bungalows in Bukit Antarabangsa, Hulu Klang. Four bodies have been found and eight to 10 people are still feared buried...The landslide has cut off the access road to the residential area, trapping hundreds of people at Bukit Antarabangsa in Hulu Klang. Azmin Ali, the state rep for Bukit Antarabangsa told Malaysiakini that rescuers are now fighting against time to reach those trapped under the mud and rubble...The politician said he rushed over to the scene at 4.30am soon after he received words of the landslide.

On December 11 1993, 48 people were killed when the Highland Towers Condominium in Hulu Klang collapsed. Let us pray for the rescue workers' safety as they seek to find more survivors. 8-|

HIGH-FIVE POWER - www.malaysiakini.com

Instead of losing sleep over the Barisan Nasional-led federal government’s alleged discrimination, the five Pakatan Rakyat-led states have decided to work together to survive the impending global economic crisis. Their main concern is mitigating an expected influx of over half a million jobless Malaysians in the local employment market due to massive retrenchment, both in and outside the country. The Penang, Kedah, Perak, Selangor and Kelantan governments are expected to work closely to create more jobs for unemployed workers...Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said it was wrong of the federal government to sideline the five Pakatan states, which collectively account for nearly 60 percent of the country's annual gross domestic product and at least half of the nation's industrial workers. (Source: Malaysiakini)

Nothing wrong for the federal government to sideline the five Pakatan states. In fact, it is expected to do so after losing in the last general election. Clearly, the 'rakyat' has rejected the self-serving BN. Stop being childish. Serve the 'rakyat' first. Only then you may win our hearts. Understand? ;)
