Despite the earlier heavy rainfall and muddy grounds, it was a carnival-like atmosphere at the venue.
The
event started at 11am, with Chief Minister Lim
Guan Eng, Information, Communication and Culture minister Rais Yatim,
and Tourism minister Ng Yen Yen arriving at the event followed by the Prime Minister Najib Razak who arrived at
about 12.05pm, accompanied by federal minister and Gerakan president Koh
Tsu Koon.
During his welcoming speech, Rais said he was uncertain of the number of participants at the event, but estimated the crowd to be 20,000.
During his welcoming speech, Rais said he was uncertain of the number of participants at the event, but estimated the crowd to be 20,000.
Rais had asked Penang Chief Police Officer Ayub Yaacob how big the crowd was and the latter whispered in the former's ears that it was not less than 25,000 people.
Rais later told reporters that the overwhelming response to the open house reflected the strong and harmonious relationships between the people and the leaders and also the success of the 1Malaysia and government transformation programmes.
Bernama quoted Rais as saying, "Various
races have been working together in realising this open house, it
reflects something positive under the concept of 1Malaysia and
government transformation."
Open houses organized by the governmen, be it at federal or state level, have been around for the longest time since Malaysia achieved her independence, I believe. So, what's the big deal about this success of 1Malaysia and government transformation programmes, bla bla bla.
