SHAH ALAM, Oct 14 — Proton's replacement model for the Waja has been tentatively priced from RM79,880 to under RM95,000 and will be open for booking starting today.
The official launch date for the 1.8L to 2.0L model, named Inspira, is November 10.
Customers who book the car from now till November 15 will receive a free two-year service package.
The car was developed in collaboration with the Mitsubishi Motor Corporation of Japan and is believed to be based on the Japanese carmaker’s Lancer model.
Proton managing director Datuk Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir explained that the price was higher than the 10 year old Waja model, which has been discontinued effective today, because it was not a direct replacement.
“Customers want to upgrade so we have to offer a better car,” he told reporters at the soft launch of Inspira. “We are offering a new alternative and creating a niche.”
He said that the Inspira will be built at the same Shah Alam MVF factory as the Exora model.
“We want to demonstrate to partners that we can build good quality cars,” said Syed Zainal.
He added that Proton was keen to export the Inspira but would have to ensure stability of the quality first.
“The priority is quality,” he said.
The Proton chief noted that the recent recall for two Proton models demonstrated that the carmaker was serious about changing for the better.
“When we did the recall, we showed we are not afraid to face challenges and that we are growing up in maturity,” he said.
The Inspira comes in four colors: red, white, silver and black.
The booking fee has been set at RM1,000.
