KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin today advised consumers not to buy or drink tea which contains artificial colouring.
She said the artificial colouring in tea could be detected by sprinkling the tea onto cold water in a glass, and the colouring would settle at the bottom of the container.

She was asked to comment on a Bernama report quoting the Kelantan Health Department yesterday that the "teh timbang" or "teh sukat", tea dust with artificial colouring and was hazardous to health in the long term.

"The ministry hopes that the people will not panic as constant monitoring and enforcement is being undertaken to ensure the safety of consumers," she said in a statement.
Rosnah said statistics showed that from 2006 to 2010, 10 per cent (125 samples) of the 1,253 samples of tea tested contained artificial colouring.

As a result, 28 cases were brought to court and the offenders were fined a total of RM35,350, she added.

Rosnah said consumers who suspected that the tea they bought or consumed contained artificial colouring could lodge a report with the ministry through the district health offices or state health departments or the ministry's website at http://fsq.moh.gov.my. -- BERNAMA
