KUALA LUMPUR: A simple 90-
second video about unity, peace
and tolerance in Malaysian society
in the unlikeliest of places – a
packed elevator – has emerged
as one of the winners of an international
film competition.
Ryan Tan Chuan Min, 25, had
read about the Plural+ Video
festival in the newspapers last
September, and thought he would
give it a try. “I have always been
interested in national issues. This
was an opportunity to do something
for my country,” he said.
His video, titled Unity, peace
and tolerance = friendship, depicted
groups of youths, some
wearing T-shirts with the words
“Malay, India, Cina and 1Malaysia”
and others in traditional costume,
in an elevator that was overloaded.
Instead of forcing someone to
leave the lift, they worked together
to solve the problem. The
message: unity in diversity.
Tan almost missed out on the
award presentation in New York
due to financial difficulties, but
with the help of MCA, he obtained
sponsorship from a travel agency
for his flight and accommodation.
A local university also sponsored
US$1,000 (RM 3,070) for his trip.
The Plural+ Video festival, organised
by the United Nations
Alliance of Civilisation, is a short
film competition which invites
video entries from youths to voice
out on community issues.
