KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan said today that he had watched with his wife a sex video released recently and is convinced the man featured is Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Ahmad was responding to a question on the sex video that has been widely circulated, during a forum organised today by Umno.
“There is no conspiracy here. What has been said by (Datuk Shazryl) Eskay is true and those who have watched the video admit that it is true. I have seen the video and admit that Anwar Ibrahim is in the video ... Yes, I watched it with my wife,” he said.
Last month, Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah performed the sumpah laknat oath by swearing in God’s name that Anwar is the man featured in a sex video that was recently shown to journalists.
Shazryl, a key protagonist behind the sex video allegedly featuring Anwar, has insisted that the opposition leader is the person in the 21-minute video.
Shazryl, former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik and Perkasa’s Datuk Shuib Lazim Abdul Rahim, collectively known as “Datuk T”, have claimed responsibility for the video.
Anwar has accused Datuk Seri Najib Razak of using the ongoing sex video saga as his main weapon to keep BN in government.
Ahmad, however, said today that Anwar’s allegation was ridiculous, as Umno would not want to alienate the Malay electorate further.
“There is no conspiracy and if we look at the first sodomy case in 1999, the Malays sympathised with Anwar and we felt it during the general election. It would be the stupidest strategy if we are responsible for the sex tape and his second sodomy case,” he said.
Anwar was first charged with sodomy and corruption in 1998 after he was sacked from the Cabinet and was later convicted and jailed for both offences.
He was freed in September 2004 and later resurrected his political career by winning back his Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in a by-election in 2008, which had been held in the interim by his wife.
But he is now facing a sodomy charge for the second time in life.
On June 29, 2008, his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, lodged a police report claiming that Anwar had sodomised him. Anwar has denied the sodomy charge against him, describing it as “evil, frivolous lies by those in power.”
