Earlier information indicated that Khairy was leading in the race, with still some way to go before the manual counting process ends.
Both Khir and Khairy, along with Mukhriz Mahathir, are vying to head the powerful youth wing to replace the outgoing head Hishammuddin Hussein.
Political observers however are predicting a photo-finish involving Khairy and Khir for the post.
As for the race to be the head of the Wanita wing, a change of leadership seems to be in the cards with Shahrizat taking the lead against incumbent Rafidah Aziz.
The contest for the Wanita top post was expected to be a close one, with the loser set to be resigned to a political limbo.
Shahrizat has opted to go for broke by challenging Rafidah and has not decided to defend her deputy chief post in the wing.
Earlier, polling for the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings ended at 1.45pm. Manual counting has started and results are expected to be announced at 9pm tonight.
Polling had started on time at 11am for the Wanita and Puteri wings but there was a slight delay for the Youth delegates.
However no untoward incidents were reported during the polling process.
