University Rankings

In the first-ever local rating system, Universiti Malaya (UM) is the only public higher education institution to obtain a five-star rating. (Click here for the story)
Ok. We are proud that we have a local rating. No doubt, we need one but we must not forget the ranking of local universities against international benchmark.

UM is not in the list of Times Higher Education, World University Rankings 2007, THE TOP 200 WORLD UNIVERSITIES. (Click here for the ranking)

I have heard that UM was once upon a time, one of the top 100 universities in the world, then 200, now it is the top 300????? Is the backsliding due to not having the English language as a medium of instruction in our education system?

Yes, University of Malaya was once a great institution. Its Faculty of Medicine (my Alma Mater)was truly one of the top medical school in the world.

There were two main reasons why the standard of MU managed to reach such heights. Firstly, only capable and experienced people were allowed to hold positions of responsibility. Secondly, only deserving students were admitted according to their academic ability.

But then came the beginning of its downfall with the unfair implementation of the affirmative policy. Suddenly, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine was a Malay and so were a few heads of department, all promoted beyond their levels of competence. There were widespread anger and disillusionment which was soon followed by a mass exodus of top notch lecturers and professors. Many of them migrated to Singapore and Australia. This happened in 1977/78 around the time of my graduation. The VC of MU, Prof Ungku Aziz, reassured the public by saying, " For every staff lost, we have 4 waiting at the wings to take over." Man, what a stupid statement! Are you not concerned about the quality of the replacements.

It is so sad to see how MU has degenerated to such a parlous state. What a shame! What a waste!

Malaysia could have been a great nation. Now you can only see it being torn apart by unscrupulous, corrupted and inept leaders, ever ready to stir racial sentiments in order to consolidate their power. Lately, Dr Mad-Hatter seems to be the worst culprit.

Malaysia urgently needs a leader of the caliber of Abraham Lincoln, with his wisdom, humility, magnanimity and deep sense of justice and nation building, to heal the rotting wounds. To hell with "Ketuanan Melayu"! What so superior when you continue to hang on to your crutches.

All Malaysian, irrespective of race and religion, should be treated equally. Their needs, concerns and problems are equally important and should be addressed impartially.

Thanks for sharing.

Now I understand better.

77/78? I was only 4/5.

Ungku Aziz! Man, I agree. I wonder who influenced him to say that or he had a personal agenda. ;)
