CAP: Ban TV ads pushing sweet foodstuff

Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP) president SM Mohamed Idris called on government to ban advertisements of highly-sugared and junk food items, and drinks, during children's television viewing hours to control diabetes and other sugar-related diseases from young.

Idris pointed out that 15 per cent of Malaysians aged above 30 were suffering from diabetes and said Malaysians should be educated from young on the danger of sugar and diabetes.

Diabetes had once been described by Malaysian health authorities as the "mother of all diseases" as over 60 ailments were linked to sugar consumption including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, asthma and allergies.
