BTN taught me the Chinese are the Jews of Asia - nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar

By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 — I am one of the privileged few to have attended a local public university and learned the meaning of hate, thanks to the ever popular Biro Tata Negara.

All undergraduates were forced to attend this programme or else they would not be eligible for graduation.

The BTN under the Prime Minister’s Department brought in “intellectual” speakers who were supposed to enlighten the students about the meaning of being a Malaysian but instead it felt more like a communist propaganda camp brainwashing those attending about the importance of “Ketuanan Melayu”.

The camp would usually take place during the weekends. Students would have to register early in the morning and the programme would last the whole day.

The organisers were always on their guard, asking participants to show their student identification cards each time they entered the hall, fearing the presence of outsiders.

In the hall, students were asked to turn off their mobile phones.

During the lectures, questions were planted among the audience and the students were advised not to ask any other questions.

One speaker began with the history of Malaysia and how much the country had gone through, always emphasising the May 13 riots.

He stressed the point of how much the Malays had sacrificed and how the community should be united especially from outside threat — the Chinese community.

He said that the Chinese community were “the Jews of Asia” and were just itching to take over when Malays were disunited and broken.

The speaker also revealed a greater Chinese conspiracy where the Chinese Malaysians were working together with Singapore to topple the Malay government.

“Do you want to become like the Malays in Singapore?” he asked.

He also went so far as to criticise Malay girls for dating boys from other races.

He added that they should not be cheap and embarrass their families.

Once, a student told the speaker that as Muslims, we should also respect other races who are also Muslims.

“All Muslims are Malays so it does not matter if they are Chinese or Indians. If they are Muslims then they are Malays,” the speaker replied.

This is why I was relieved when I learned that the Selangor government had moved to ban its civil servants, employees of state subsidiaries and students at state-owned education institutions from attending any BTN courses with immediate effect.

However I believe racism in varsities does not end at BTN because classrooms have also become victims of ignorant scholars.

My friend was verbally abused during his sociology class when he did not agree with the points made by his lecturer.

“You must be DKK,” the lecturer told him.

“What is DKK?” he asked.

“You must be darah keturunan keling (descendents of Indians),” the lecturer said, pointing to his dark skin.

My Saudi friend was also shocked by the comments made by his lecturer in his Islamic civilisation class.

“We should save our Orang Asli from the Chinese people. They are like the Palestinians and the Chinese are Israel. We must fight the Jews,” the lecturer told his students.

The lecturer even failed one of his students in his oral exam when he quoted a Western scholar in his presentation.

“You should be ashamed of yourselves. You are a Muslim and should only use Islamic scholars,” he scolded the student.

I was personally saddened when my Islamic law lecturer compared Christianity to Head & Shoulder’s 3 in 1 shampoo in referring to the religion’s Holy Trinity.

I feel that racism has been institutionalised in our country and that BTN is only the tip of the iceberg.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin defended BTN yesterday and claimed that it was not racist but is line with the 1 Malaysia concept.

I have to humbly disagree and would like to suggest maybe the ministers should bring their overseas children home and let them have a taste of what BTN is.

Umno-led BN protest: Uncontrollable violence!

Sep 8, 2008..Umno in Action.

Today, there was a protest staged outside Penang State assembly. The protest, led by Penang Umno Youth chief Norman Zahalan, started at 12.15pm and ended about 45 minutes later.

Later, Penang Gerakan Youth chief Oh Tong Keong told Malaysiakini that he tried to stop the unknown protestor to set the posters on fire but the situation became uncontrollable.
Why didn't the police control the situation? Police is unafraid to catch people who light up candles but afraid to catch people who set posters on fire.

Streamyx RM66 512 kbps: My annual port problem - nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar

Since subscribing to Streamyx when the RM88-free-modem package was introduced (year 2001/2002, I think), I have been having the 'port problem' at least once a year.

Each time the problem occurred, I would call to complain, knowing very well that it was going to be the 'port problem'. As usual, each time I call, I will be asked to do the basic 'self-test' - cables properly connected, modem directly connected to notebook (bypass router), restart modem, wait for 15 secs, bla bla bla...

Today, the 'port problem' occured again!

Why do I let Streamyx suck my money even though I get this problem annually? Reason being, I know that other providers are full of promises and have proven to be as bad as, if not worse than Streamyx. How do I know? I have friends who are once-upon-a-time Streamyx users and have switched to other providers and they still complain!!!

If you still do not know why overall, broadband is snailband in Malaysia, read 'Investors put off by Malaysia's high-cost, low-speed broadband'.

In the meantime, I am stuck with Streamyx - the BEST among the WORST!

Silaturrahim antara Umno dan Parti KOMUNIS China

I read with amusement how Umno bloggers are painting DAP as a communist party @ The Malaysian Insider.

They say a picture paints a thousand words. So here goes:

MP Teresa Kok:
If you really want to paint DAP as communist party then why did they ask the chairman of the China communist party Hu Jintao to come here. Why did Najib lead a trade delegation to China and even invest in the country. Malaysia has also given mega-projects to Chinese companies. So who is closer to the China's communist party compared to DAP? I think they have nothing better but to make DAP look ugly

1Malaysia to eliminate Tamil from SPM???!!! nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar

The fear is the eventual withering away of the language, leaving a question mark hanging over the 1Malaysia concept.

There is a a perceived grand plan to purge the Tamil language from the education system through the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and more than 20 national Indian NGOs will stage a protest on Dec 12 at the Wisma Peladang in Petaling Jaya against it.

The perceived grand plan is the government's elimination of Tamil language and Tamil literature under the 10-subject SPM package system from next year.

The joint NGO group organizing chairman A. Thiruvenggadam said Indian students whose mother tongue is Tamil would not be able to sit for subjects in their language because of the restrictive ruling and this is not what 1 Malaysia is all about.

The problem with the 10-subject SPM package arises if if an Indian student sits for nine subjects, he has only one more subject which can be used up for Tamil language and will not be able to sit for Tamil Literature. Worse yet, if the Indian student takes all 10 subjects there is no option at all for both the subjects, A. Thiruvenggadam said in an interview with Malaysiakini.

MCA factions await Najib to break deadlock - nizar nizar nizar

The three feuding factions are waiting for Najib's return from overseas to break the deadlock on the fresh polls date.

Despite consensus that there is a need for elections, the squabbling factions in MCA still have not come to terms when fresh party polls should be held . The faction led by MCA vice-president Liow Tiong Lai had announced the calling off of the second extraordinary general meeting (EGM) scheduled for Saturday at the party headquarters. Instead, they would turn the second EGM into a briefing session.

Oh man! What a waste of time!! Briefing session!!!? If only Liow were to spend that much time and energy in the Health Ministry as he did in MCA, I think there would not be a nationwide dengue alert today.

Liow is an excellent example of service to self above service to the nation.

Someone knocked my car at stationary in a single parking lot (between two pillars) next to a six-bay parking behind the PJLA Lift 3 (near car wash!) at Jaya 1 Level B1 on the night of Nov 7, 2009.

I only discovered the damage the next morning.

Najib told to answer Bala's claims

The prime minister should stop trying to ignore allegations of his involvement in the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shariibuu, said the DAP leader, Lim Kit Siang, especially after the reappearance of private investigator P Balasubramaniam and Malaysiakini's interview with his lawyer, Americk Singh Sidhu, which linked the premier to the murder.

Good job, YB Lim but one thing for sure, Umno-appointed PM will never admit to committing any crime if indeed he had committed one.

I believe many perceive Najib to be involved in Altantuya's murder. Of course, I am one of the many. Months ago, I met a friend who just came back from a seminar. He told me he had the chance to shake hands with the 'murderer'! Of course, no prizes for guessing right WHO the murderer was!

After all, Mahathir did say:

Legally he has cleared his name (over Altantuya). But whether people will perceive that he has cleared his name or not is something he cannot decide.

Dengue flu at worrying level

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Three deaths -- two in Melaka and one in Penang -- were reported from 819 dengue cases last week, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said.

He said the number was an increase of 99 cases or 17 per cent from the previous week.

The first victim was a 32-year-old labourer from Kampung Orang Asli Lubuk Bandung, Jasin, Melaka who sought treatment from a private clinic on Nov 6.

"The patient was referred to the Melaka Hospital on the same day but died the next day due to haemorrhagic dengue fever," he said in a statement.

The second case involved a 49-year-old civil servant, who had hypertension, from Kampung Lubuk Redan, Masjid Tanah, Melaka.

Dr Mohd Ismail said the patient received an initial treatment from a Health Clinic on Nov 9 after developing a fever two days earlier and was asked to return the next day for an evaluation.

He was referred to the Melaka Hospital on the same day after showing dengue haemorrhagic symptoms and died on Nov 12 due to complications from dengue shock syndrome.

The third victim was a 10-year-old boy from Halaman Gelugor in Penang who was reported to have developed a fever but only sought treatment at a private hospital three days later in seriously ill condition.

The boy was then referred to the Penang Hospital and was admitted to the intensive care unit on Nov 15 and died on Nov 20 due to complications from dengue shock syndrome, he said.

Meanwhile, during the week between Nov 15-21, seven states recorded a high increase in the number of dengue cases namely Penang (29 per cent), Sarawak (28 per cent), Johor (21 per cent), Negeri Sembilan (19 per cent), Kuala Lumpur (12 per cent), Perak (11 per cent) and Selangor (seven per cent).

Dr Mohd Ismail said the ministry viewed seriously the increase in the dengue cases and had issued a circular to all state health directors urging them to step up enforcement.

He also called on members of the public to ensure their homes and workplaces were free of mosquito breeding sites.

"The weather could be the contributing factor to the rise in the number of dengue cases but we should continue giving attention to ensuring that our surroundings are free of aedes mosquito's breeding ground," he said.

Dr Mohd Ismail also said that apathy among the society was also a contributing factor to the increase in the number of dengue cases.

Due to this, he said, only 21 per cent of 106 gotong-royong activities in dengue epidemic area could be carried out.

On Chikungunya, Dr Mohd Ismail said 275 cases were reported this week, dropping slightly from 277 cases last week, with Sarawak contributing 99 per cent of the cases.

A total of 4,742 Chikungunya cases reported so far this year compared to 4,271 cases during the same period last year. No Chikungunya deaths were reported so far.

FREE Malay Mail as of today. Grab one copy now!

As usual, after work, I left the office and was walking towards the Malay Mail. Suddenly, I saw a man standing and reading next to a newspaper stand.

'Something unsual,' I thought to myself. So, I stopped to look. I could not believe what I saw the word 'FREE' on the stand.

Before taking a copy from the stand, I asked the man, 'FREE?'

He answered affirmatively, 'As of today.'

'Just like The Sun,' I said.

He somewhat disagreed, saying, 'Ours is the only afternoon paper.'

'Yeah, Sun is in the morning,' I said matter-of-factly.

Quickly, I took a FREE copy of the Malay Mail, said 'thank you' to the man and walked off feeling rather happy.

FREE is better than cheap mah.

PI's lawyer: 'Anwar not behind Bala tapes'

EXCLUSIVE ‘Anwar had nothing to do with the release of the first statutory declaration except to deliver a speech prior to the press conference at the PKR headquarters last July. I had no communication with him at all," says Americk Singh Sidhu.

To a question by Malaysiakini on Bala's whereabout, Americk said:
Bala is now back in Chennai with his whole family. We advised him to take his wife and children out of Malaysia to Chennai for obvious safety reasons after the interview was carried out.

Muhyiddin: Think carefully, Ku Li

Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah should ‘carefully consider’ heading the opposition-initiated caucus on oil and gas royalties, says the DPM.

Muhyiddin was speaking to reporters today after chairing the National Anti-Drug Action Council meeting in Parliament, saying, “It is better that Razaleigh carefully analyses (his decision) because even though it involves the state of Kelantan, (the caucus) is sponsored by the opposition and Anwar (Ibrahim) himself is behind it.”

Yesterday, reporters were told by Anwar, the Opposition Leader and Permatang Paul MP, that Razaleigh had consented to head the caucus when it is initiated in the House.

Najib 'linked' to Bala's disappearance

In an interview with Malaysiakini, Americk Singh Sidhu (P Balasubramaniam's lawyer) said any reasonable person would draw the conclusion that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is somehow linked to the disappearance of private investigator and the facts seem to point to the possibility that they wanted him out of the way and delegated this job to others close to them to execute.

Americk said as matters stood, he was concerned about the involvement of Nazim (Razak), Najib's younger brother and asked, "The question is why would he have an interest in Bala's disappearance if it were not to protect his brother?"

Recently emerged from hiding, Balasubramaniam revealed that he had met Nazim, an architect, the night before he made a dramatic reversal and recanted his first statutory declaration in which he alleged that Najib had close ties with murdered Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Police deny Anwar's claim over ceramah cancellation

2009/11/24

JOHOR BARU: The police today denied that they had been prompted by Umno to cancel a "ceramah" (talk) attended by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Kulai two days ago.

"Kulaijaya district police chief Supt Zulkefly Yahya said the police had not approved the permit for the ceramah and had also not taken instructions from Umno as alleged by Anwar.

"As the district police chief, I had not approved the permit, and I advised the organiser not to go ahead with the ceramah but my advice was ignored," he said in a statement issued here.

Zulkefly said the permit was denied owing to factors associated with security and public order, besides averting slander by certain people which could confuse the audience.

Newspapers reported today that Anwar had written in his blog that the ceramah was cancelled because the permit issued was withdrawn after a protest by 30 Umno Youth members.

He reportedly said that he was able to speak for only four minutes before the audience dispersed.

As usual, the police always deny allegations hurled against them. Is Anwar so powerful an orator? Is the police so weak that they cannot 'crowd control' and contain public disorder?

Kota Siputeh: EC fails to get stay

Kota Siputeh: EC fails to get stay

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 23, 2009) : The Election Commission (EC) has failed to get a stay of the High Court ruling declaring the Kota Siputeh state seat vacant.

Abu Hassan Sharif

The High Court (Appellate and Special Powers) dismissed its application for the stay today but the EC has taken the matter to the Court of Appeal by filing for another stay.

The EC will have to issue the writ for a by-election by Wednesday if it does not get the stay order.

Justice Alizatul Khair Osman Khairuddin, in her decision, agreed with lead counsel Sulaiman Abdullah, for Kedah state assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Abdul Isa Ismail, that the EC had failed to convince the court on the issue of the special circumstances to allow the stay.

She said the argument of financial implication forwarded by senior federal counsel Datuk Kamaruddin Md Said, for the EC, did not fall within special circumstances for granting the application.

"It is their ordinary duty under the law to conduct the election and the EC did not cite any case laws to support this argument," she said.

Alizatul on Nov 16 declared the seat vacant after ruling that its state assemblyman, Datuk Abu Hassan Sharif, was no longer holding the seat after failing to attend two consecutive meetings of the state assembly without leave.

On Sept 1, Kedah assembly speaker Datuk Isa Ismail filed for a judicial review after the EC accepted Abu Hassan's medical certificate for his absence from the meetings and declared that there was no vacancy for the seat and the BN assemblyman was still representative of the constituency.

Besides the stay application, the EC and Abu Hassan have also filed appeals to the Court of Appeal.

In the landmark decision, Alizatul also ordered the EC to call for a by-election for the vacant seat. In rejecting the application, Alizatul said the law did not provide for a stay of a declaration.

She said Kamaluddin had also failed to provide case laws to assist her in the matter whereas Sulaiman had.

"The court will be very cautious to grant a stay over the constitutional duty conferred on the Election Commission," she said.

Therefore, she ruled that the court could not allow for the application for a stay, Bernama reported.

Among those present was Abu Hassan.

According to the Elections Act 1958, the EC has 10 days to convene a special meeting to call for an election once the seat is declared vacant. That deadline ends tomorrow since the court decision was made on Nov 16.

Mukhriz Mahatir

The EC has to issue a writ, fixing dates for nomination and polling. It is considered as a contempt of court if the EC does not decide on the date by then.

Meanwhile, Hemananthi Sivanandam quoted BN-Jerlun MP Datuk Mukhriz Mahatir as saying that although the party is disappointed with the decision of the High Court, it is ready to face a by-election.

"We are making the preparations for any eventuality and in any case if the decision is not in our favour, we will be ready to face the by-election," said Mukhriz.

Asked if he was ready to be a candidate for the constituency as speculated by some Umno bloggers, Mukhriz said he was willing to acccept the decision of the leadership.

Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan said regardless of the decisions of the appeals, the party is ready with the election machinery for a by-election. If it takes place, this will be the country’s 10th by election since the general election last year.

Perodua launches Alza; eyes 33.3% market share next year - nizar nizar nizar

Perodua launches Alza; eyes 33.3% market share next year
Meena L. Ramadas.

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 23, 2009) : National carmaker Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua (Perodua) expects to increase its market share to 33.3% by the end of next year with the introduction of its new Alza Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) and the increase in consumer demand.

Perodua managing director Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar said today the company currently accounts for 31.1% of the total industry volume (TIV).

He said Perodua expects to surpass its initial sales revenue target of RM7 billion this year as the sales of the Alza MPV is expected to boost revenue.

"So, we are actually seeing an increase to RM7.3 billion this year as we had a 20% production increase in the middle of the year," Hafiz told newsmen at the launch of Alza MPV by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the KL Convention Centre today.

He said the company expects the Malaysian Automotive Association’s (MAA) estimation of TIV to increase from 520,000 this year to 530,000 next year.

Despite Perodua registering a 2% decrease in unit sales this year, at 164,000 units as opposed to 167,000 units last year, the company will be increasing its target unit sales next year.

"Our sales target for next year is 176,000 units with the introduction of the Alza, and we expect to increase this target to 180,000 units in the second quarter next year," said Hafiz.

He also said the company had to stop its scrap scheme as the company’s target of 10,000 units had doubled to 20,000 in six months from April to October this year.

"The scrap scheme translates to dollars and cents out of our pocket because we were spending RM100 million on those 20,000 vehicles," said Hafiz.

Meanwhile, Perodua will be increasing the production of Alza MPV, which is priced between RM56,000 and RM64,000 each, to 4,000 units monthly next year in line with the expected increase in unit sales to between 3,500 and 4,000 units a month.

The advanced version Alza MPV, which will only be delivered from March, will fetch between RM67,000 and RM70,000 each.

The company has spent RM300 million on platform investment that includes research and development on the Alza.

Hafiz said the Alza is targeted at 30- to 40-year-olds with young families as well as single urbanites.

"Preliminary numbers indicate that 80% of the MPV buyers are aged between 30 and 40 while the remaining 20% are single, urban people," he said.

He also said the bookings of the MPV had been encouraging, with 3,500 registrations in only 10 days from Nov 13.

Hafiz also said the current MPV market share is 10% of the TIV and "can easily increase to 30% by the end of next year".

Alza, with nearly 90% local content, is available in six colours – ebony black, ivory white, pearl white, medallion grey, glittering silver and classy purple.

Hafiz said the company’s next launch will be the MyVi replacement in 2011.

Penang CM says land conversion brought RM8.2m revenue - nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar nizar

Lim defended the land conversion. — File pic

PENANG, Nov 22 — Penang profited RM8.2 million when it converted 1.4 hectares of land for the PDC Heritage Hotel (PHH) joint-venture project from leasehold to freehold, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said amid swirling controversy over the Pakatan Rakyat government's land policy.

Lim said the revenue came from RM6.32 million for conversion to freehold and another RM1.89 million as additional premium to change conditions for the prime land at the heritage buffer zone. The chief minister yesterday declassified minutes of meetings by the state exco, state land committee and the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) over the piece of land.

"RM8.2 million is a big revenue source for the state government," the chief minister said in a statement issued today.

He also noted the cost of raising PHH's equity by 1 per cent to 50 per cent was borne by YTL Hotel and Properties Sdn Bhd, the joint-venture partner in the project.

"What is important is that PHH is no longer controlled 51 per cent by a private company but is equally shared with PDC having 50 per cent share over the land and can determine the project's direction," said Lim, adding private companies that hold 51 per cent equity can carry out anything and ignore PDC's views.

Lim had said yesterday that based on a letter from YTL Corporation on May 9, 2007, the former Penang chief minister had agreed in principle on Jan 18, 2007 to convert the land to freehold for PHH and on condition that the land was “for residence and business only”.

He said the letter from PDC on July 17, 2007 asked PHH to make an application to convert the land to freehold, adding the project was neglected and in an “abandoned” state since YTL forwarded a development plan on Aug 1, 2008 and this had attracted the attention of Unesco which inquired about the project given that the site was inside the Unesco heritage buffer zone.

“To revive the project to bring back progress as well as increase returns for the government and the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP), I had negotiations with all parties, including the developer YTL H&P, on the condition to not bring about loss to the people and the state government,” he said.

He said the conversion to freehold status was approved and later ratified by the executive council on June 3, 2008 with three additional conditions for the benefit of the public and the state government.

In today's statement, Lim also countered claims that his statement has not rebuffed Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhammad Farid Saad's allegations that he had lied to the state assembly sitting in August about his government's land policy.

"A preliminary review by the Land and Mines Office about Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhammad Farid Saad's allegations is that his question is towards state land that is under lease. According to the Land and Mines Office, this is state land held under State Secretary Incorporated (SSI).

"At this point there is no such application received by the SSI," Lim said.

He said Umno's allegations are baseless and politically-motivated to bring down the Pakatan Rakyat state government.

"It looks like the CAT administation by the state government is so effective that Umno and Barisan Nasional have to create stories to instil hate towards the Pakatan Rakyat," said the chief minister, referring to his state's "Competency, Accountability and Transparency" concept.

World Breaking News: English in workplace weird - minister

zorro-unmasked wrote a perfect post entitled 'SPEAKING ENGLISH IN THE WORKPLACE IS WEIRD SAYS THIS WEIRDO!' Go read it!

In the meantime, the 'weird' remark by this minister has made international headlines - one of them published in news.com.au

Let's turn back the clock to the day when the government announced that science and mathematics would be taught in Malay effective 2012.

Tun Mahathir was dead against the decision. An excert from a report by Malaysian Mirror:

He added that those who oppose the teaching of science and mathematics in English were also from the rural areas and often spoke in English.

In other fields, such as in the diplomatic corps and in the civil service, it is pertinent to be well-versed in English as they are expected to speak at international forums.

“It is important to acquire knowledge for the sake of advancing in the future. Let us not gamble on the future of our children just to show we are a nationalist and so protective of our language.

“The love for the language should not surpass the love for one’s nation,” said Dr Mahathir, adding that speaking in one’s own language does not necessarily makes one’s nation well-respected and admired by others.

Teoh's second autopsy done, findings not revealed
By Syed Jaymal Zahiid

SUNGAI BULOH, Nov 22 — Pathologists took two hours to complete the second autopsy for DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock today at the Sungai Buloh Hospital but they did not reveal the findings.

Teoh’s younger sister, Lee Lan told reporters they have been briefed by Dr Porntip Rojasunand on the autopsy but could not divulge the details. The renowned Thai pathologist has been hired by the Selangor government to observe the autopsy done by the hospital’s chief pathologist Dr Shahidan Md Noor.

“We were briefed but we don’t understand the briefing given by Dr Porntip as she was using a lot of scientific terms,” said Lee Lan, who acted as the family’s spokesman.

Her parents and elder brother were present at the hospital where they had earlier said prayers and burnt some offerings for Teoh, who died under mysterious circumstances outside the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Selangor office last July 16.

She tried to console some journalists apparently left confused and frustrated by the lack of details on the post-mortem despite having waited for more than six hours.

“Let’s wait for the inquest to resume,” she finally said, adding she was not sure when the full report will be ready. The inquest into Teoh’s death will resume on Dec 9.

She added that the family will rebury Teoh at his tomb in the Semenyih Memorial Park on Tuesday.

Teoh’s family lawyer Gobind Singh Deo left the hospital earlier with Dr Porntip without meeting the media, presumably to avoid disclosing the details of the second autopsy.

Apart from Dr Pornthip representing Selangor, the MACC sent UK pathologist Dr Peter Vanezis to observe the autopsy together with the pathologists who performed the first autopsy.

The postmortem was performed from lunch time and finished about 3pm.

Teoh’s body was exhumed yesterday after a ruling by the coroner’s court which heard Dr Pornthip’s testimony that Teoh’s death is 80 per cent homicide, contradicting the findings of the first post-mortem which suggested the 30-year-old had committed suicide.

Teoh’s family had disputed the results as he was due to register his marriage on the morning he was found dead.

    Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!
  2. All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays,

Brother love binds man to man.
    Ever singing, march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife,
    Joyful music leads us Sunward
In the triumph song of life.

Bridge tragedy: Parents file RM105m suit against Govt, others

IPOH: The parents of the three young girls killed in the Oct 26 bridge tragedy in Kuala Dipang filed a RM105mil suit against the Government and 10 others at the High Court here on Friday.

The other respondents include the Education Ministry, the Perak Education Department, SJK (T) Mambang Diawan, SJK (T) Gopeng, GS Synergy Sdn Bhd (which sponsored the bridge), CWL Enterprise (the contractor) and others.

Last month, three primary school pupils attending a 1Malaysia camp -- N. Dina Deve and M. Devatharshini, both 11, and 12-year-old V. Divyashree -- drowned after the suspension bridge they were on collapsed into the Sungai Kampar. Nineteen other schoolchildren survived the tragedy.

Two committees were established to investigate the incident, one under the Education Ministry and the other under the Perak Pakatan Rakyat.

The ministry’s committee is expected to file its report soon, while the Pakatan committee said that the collapsed suspension bridge was an illegal structure and the teachers who were supposed to have been supervising them were not present.

Datuk killed fleeing robbers

By STEVEN DANIEL

KUALA LUMPUR: The former president of the Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) died yesterday morning after he fell from the first floor of his house while fleeing armed robbers.

It is learnt three men who were not wearing masks and armed with parang entered Datuk Patrick Wong’s (pic) house at Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar, at around 7pm on Monday through the back entrance.

At the time of the incident, Wong, 57, was in the computer room on the first floor, his 25 year-old-son was having a shower upstairs while his 18-year-old daughter and maid were believed to be in the kitchen.

One of the suspects stood guard downstairs while the other two went upstairs.

City OCCI Datuk Ku Chin Wah said Wong could have struggled with the two armed robbers and leapt out of the window in a bid to escape.

His son heard some noise and came out of the bathroom to check only to find armed men in the house.

“The son put up a fight with one of the suspects but was slashed on his right arm.” Ku said one of the robbers was heard saying that the victim had jumped before they rushed outside, dragged Wong’s unconscious body inside the house and fled.

Wong was rushed to a private hospital nearby but fell into a coma and was pronounced dead yesterday morning. His body was sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a post-mortem.

Investigations revealed the suspects had only stolen the daughter’s purse containing US$300 (RM1,018) and a handphone.

Ku said the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and did not rule out the possibility that there might be another motive for the attack.

Colleagues described Wong as a well-respected and friendly person with a distinguished record in the construction industry. He has been credited with helping to improve safety standards.

“MBAM and the whole construction industry send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Patrick,” said current president, Ng Kee Leen.

Several blogs online have postings on Wong’s demise.

“I will always remember you as a friendly, humble, generous, brave, respected and supportive comrade. A true anak bangsa Malaysia. A good man gone too soon,” said one message posted on http://delcapo.wordpress.com.

Wong was the founder of Satujaya Sdn Bhd and served as MBAM president from 2006 to 2008.

Why did this crime happen?

It happened because of demonization of police!

S’gor Web-TV well received

ELAN PERUMAL at the Selangor State Assembly

THE Selangor Web-TV is fast becoming a hit among people both in the state and outside, including foriegners.

Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said the state-owned web-television, which started operations in March, had received overwhelming response from viewers. It had recorded 6.82 million hits until October.

“We had a big following during the Select Committee on Competence, Accountability and Transperancy (Selcat) proceedings,” he said in his reply to Kajang representative Lee Kin Sin (PR).

During the peak, Khalid said, the Web TV had received as many as 111,308 hits a day.

On a normal day, he said, it attracted an average of 50,728 visitors.

“Most viewers spent an average of between 30 and 60 minutes on each visit,” he said.

Khalid also said the state had spent RM800,065 on the web television broadcasts so far. This averaged RM100,000 per month and he felt the money was well spent.

“We cannot deny that our Web TV is very popular,” he said.

He added that the TV had not been officially launched yet.

Khalid said the objective of the TV was to reach out to the people of Selangor on the latest developments in the state, and the people had been following many events live, including the ongoing state assembly meeting.

The Web TV has not been officially launched yet.

Nevertheless, I don't think Khalid would mind me unofficially announcing it here in my blog! 8)

Malaysia too dependent on oil and gas, says World Bank

The institution says the country should prepare for the day when fossil fuels deplete, and start looking for alternative revenue sources.

Also, the World Bank said in a statement yesterday that Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) would decline 2.3 percent this year and grow 4.1 percent in 2010 due to conditions in the country's manufacturing sector that accounted for some 30 percent of the GDP.

English proficiency still a necessary skill

I found the article entitled 'English proficiency still a necessary skill' very interesting as I could identify myself with the columnist who wrote:
Like anyone else who grew up studying at public schools, I speak relatively fluent Bahasa Malaysia. And, despite my reputation as a “banana” (white on the inside, yellow on the outside), I can speak basic Cantonese.

I reproduce below verbatim the said article:

English proficiency still a necessary skill

The Bangsar Boy by NIKI CHEONG

BEING your average Malaysian, I take pride that I am multi-lingual.

Like anyone else who grew up studying at public schools, I speak relatively fluent Bahasa Malaysia. And, despite my reputation as a “banana” (white on the inside, yellow on the outside), I can speak basic Cantonese.

But I am most comfortable speaking English, considering it is my first language — the lingua franca of choice at my home.

Needless to say, growing up, I was always proud of the fact that I had a relatively good command of the English language. In fact, there was a point in my life where I even thought I spoke better English than the British.

After all, I often spotted mistakes in letters sent to me from Maria Freeman, my childhood penpal from England. Most notably was her use of words like “their” and “your” when she actually meant “they’re” and “you’re” respectively.

At that time, too, it was not hard to feel a little superior to some of my classmates. After all, the biggest joke in school was the time that Puan Zamrudah, my former English teacher, tried to get some students to pronounce certain words that she wrote on the board.

Among the classics were:

1. Lingerie (They would pronounce it “ling-ge-ry”)

2. Mosque (“Mos-queue”)

3. Rendezvous (“Ran-des-vas”)

Okay, so the last word isn’t exactly English, but you get the idea and I’m sure this incident wasn’t exclusive to my class.

You can imagine the surprise when I got my results for the English 1119 O-Levels paper I sat together with my SPM and I didn’t get the ‘A’ I was expecting. Mostly, I was disappointed.

Since then, however, I’ve learnt to be more in control of my arrogance. I also have to admit to occasionally poking fun at those who not only have a poor grasp of English, but whose accents make their English even more difficult to understand.

Then again, everyone swoons when they hear a beauty queen speak in broken English at a Miss Universe pageant, for example, or when Rafael Nadal takes to the microphone when he wins a game of tennis. So maybe my arrogance is misplaced. I think they call it “exotic”.

Accents aside, I do have a general wish that people in general — and Malaysians in particular — could speak better English. Like it or not, English is the major language of the world. While we are seeing slight changes with China’s rise as a superpower making Mandarin more and more common, it will be quite a few years, I think, before anything overtakes English.

There is progress in getting Internet URLs to recognise different languages at the moment, but English will still remain the dominant digital language for the moment if only because of the headstart it has had.

Just look at the acronyms — or SMS language as many people refer it to — that are starting to become everyday terms: LOL (laugh out loud), OMG (oh, my God), BRB (be right back). However, shortcuts like these do exist in other languages.

My favourite Mandarin one is “881” which means “Bye Bye” from the sound of the Chinese pronunciation “Ba Ba Yi” (repeat it many times really fast and you’ll hear it)!

I don’t know many other languages well but from where I stand, I think English dominates.

Of course, I only got to thinking about all this because of an email thread between my parents, my second sister ee che, who is currently living in Australia, and myself a few days ago.

We were discussing presents (or more specifically, who owed who a certain amount of money from sharing gifts) when my dad signed off his calculations with a simple “Q.E.D”.

It is an acronym for the Latin saying, quod erat demonstrandum which means “that is demonstrated” or “that is proved”.

Dad said his using of the acronym “was a throwback to those days when national schools were ‘government schools’ and one was bound to have a Mr Simon, Mr Bromley or Mr Atkinson as one’s maths teacher.”

Apparently, when teaching algebra, these teachers liked to add Q.E.D. at the end of their “workings” when solving an equation.

I guess it’s not just the younger generation of today who are so fond of making up acronyms because, dad continues, “since we could not pronounce the Latin words, some wise guy said the phrase meant Quite Easily Done.”

News words are created and added to the vocabulary all the time, and if we don’t make an effort to improve on our language skills, we will always be playing catch-up.

In response to us scratching our heads over the use of QED, dad joked, “See lah, don’t want to teach Science and Maths in English, all these problems will crop up.”

That last sentence really does sum it all up, I guess, pun truly intended.

Muhyiddin says take time out!

ROME, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- Deputy prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the MCA may need more time to calm down and resolve the party's internal crisis.

He also hoped that the party leaders could resolve the problems faced by the MCA in a more cautious manner so that the situation would not deteriorate.

Muhyiddin, who is here to attend the World Food Security Summit, said this to Malaysian journalists when asked on the latest development in the MCA.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat today announced in Kuala Lumpur that the party Central Committee meeting had rejected the extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to be held on Nov 28, and also announced the appointment of new members of the presidential council which saw the dropping of Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and Wanita head Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, who are staunch supporters of vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Muhyiddin, who is also the deputy chairman of Barisan Nasional (BN), said MCA leaders must adhere to the Greater Unity Plan (GUP) drawn up to resolve the party's internal crisis immediately.

In fact, the MCA must look for an intermediary in resolving the party problem if "people within the party do not get any support".

"This is normal. In fact even at international conferences, we have to find an intermediary to resolve issues," he said.

At a separate function, Muhyiddin also held a meeting with Indonesian Vice-President Prof Dr Boediono, here Wednesday.

Police do not protect criminals. They shoot 'em

Police Pass Azmin Share Probe Documents To MACC

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is to continue with the investigation into the alleged ownership of RM2 million worth of shares by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Azmin Ali and his wife, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said Wednesday.

He said copies of the original documents and statements connected with the case had been handed to the MACC by the police.

"An investigation was conducted previously by the MACC. As such, the records, documents and statements given to us were handed back to the MACC yesterday for them to continue the probe," he told reporters at the police Deepavali open house, here.

Anuar Shaari, a former secretary to PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, yesterday lodged a police report on the alleged ownership of shares by Azmin and his wife.

Asked to comment on claims that the police had used excessive force in a recent shooting in Klang where five suspected robbers were shot dead, Musa said the police also had the fundamental right to self-defence.

He said those who questioned police action should consider whether they wanted to support those who upheld the law or backed criminals.

"The duty of the police is to protect the people. We do not protect criminals," he said.

He said the police did not act indiscriminately but considered public order and shot criminals as the last resort.

"If they (criminals) become aggressive, we are forced to act. They should surrender if they do not want to die. We do not want our personnel to be shot first," he said.

Meanwhile, Musa appealed for assistance from anyone who had information on the position of private investigator P. Balasubramaniam.

The authorities, including the Immigration Department, constantly monitored the movement of individuals they were looking for at every entry-exit point of the country, he said when asked to comment on a news portal report that Balasubramaniam was back in the country after having "disappeared" since July last year.

Balasubramaniam and his family reportedly went abroad for fear of their safety after he had made a statutory declaration in relation to the murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu.

The police also want to record a statement from the private investigator over a break-in at his house in Taman Pelangi, Rawang, last year.
