All evidence seems to point against snap polls happening any time soon, with persisting uncertainty in support for the ruling BN coalition and a potential tussle between Umno's top two leaders, according to the 2011-2014 country report compiled by The Economist Intelligence Unit. The England-based news organisation pointed out that senior Umno leaders had indicated they were not confident that BN will perform well overall based on these two considerations - the hazy perception of support for their party and the extent to which coalition partners have rebuilt their support bases among non-Malays. It also cited concerns among Umno members that the BN's efforts to regain non-Malay support are being undermined by Malay rights group Perkasa, claiming the right-wing organisation is supported by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and current Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin, who is a potential spanner in the works for Umno president and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak...The report stated that political intrigues within Umno, coupled with its determination to stay in power at all costs, therefore constitute the the biggest threats to political stability in Malaysia.

Karpal: Listen to Branson, stop Sodomy II trial - Malaysia 'exports' sodomy!
Senior lawyer Karpal Singh has urged the attorney-general to enter a nolle prosequi (stop the pursuit) of Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy case, in view of the international ramifications mentioned by British entrepreneur Richard Branson.
Branson said withdrawing the charge is the only way to remove the 'thorn' mentioned by Branson (right).
"Persecuting Anwar will only be counter-productive to the government's standing, especially following the March 8, 2008 general election which showed that BN does not enjoy a solid or acceptable mandate of the people. In the international scene, the government stands condemned on this issue. I call upon the government to be pragmatic and realistic. Persecuting Anwar is against the national interest as the international spotlight will be on the trial," Karpal, the veteran lawyer, who is also lead counsel for Anwar's defence team, said in a statement today.
During an investment conference in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, Branson had said that Anwar's ongoing sodomy trial is damaging the country's reputation and putting off potential investors.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 - Cabinet minister Datuk Seri Idris Jala refuted Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s warning today that Vision 2020 would most likely fail if the government continues to rely on foreign direct investment (FDI) to drive economic growth.
The minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) expressed confidence that Vision 2020 would be achieved because of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
“I believe that we can achieve Vision 2020 by 2020,” said Idris in a question and answer session after Dr Mahathir’s speech at a CEO Forum organised by the Perdana Leadership Foundation today.

'Politicising race and religion may hurt economy'
Stop politicising race and religion as it is making investors anxious, said top banker Azman Hashim.
Not mentioning names, the Ambank chairperson said that this "very Malaysian phenomenon" is seeing certain parties make decisions "not just based on...impact on the rakyat but based on political advantage."
"The first question foreign investors used to ask me was 'What is the economic outlook for your country?' but now they ask 'What are the prospects of political stability and sustainability of racial and religious harmony?'
Azman (right) said, "Racial and religious insults appear particularly on the Internet...for now cool heads prevail but how long can we expect to remain cool? Besides the politicisation of race and religion, other critical challenges to Vision 2020 is a lack of English proficiency due to "policy reversals" and the "high cost of corruption"."

Wikipedia founder says Malaysia should ditch censorship
Wikipedia founder says Malaysia should ditch censorship
A co-founder of online encyclopedia Wikipedia said on a visit to Malaysia Tuesday that the country should ditch censorship which is a damper on economic growth.
Wikipedia founder says Malaysia should ditch censorship |
"This is a country that has a fairly mixed record... there is still some censorship in this country and I think we are beginning to see that it is no longer an effective strategy, certainly not an effective strategy when we think about economic growth," he said.
"When you think about making sure that the people have the information they need, make good decisions in their lives, it's absolutely important that we have a very open flow of information," he told a financial conference.
"I want to write that information (on sites like user-generated Wikipedia) so that my fellow citizens have the knowledge they need so they can't be oppressed."
Prime Minister Najib Razak, who took office in the mainly Muslim country in April last year, promised to promote openness and transparency but has since faced accusations that his administration is trying to silence critics.
On Monday, British tycoon Richard Branson told a different conference in Kuala Lumpur that the ongoing sodomy trial against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was discouraging investors from coming to Malaysia.
Anwar, a former deputy premier who was sacked and jailed on separate sex and corruption counts a decade ago, has said that the new allegations -- of illicit relations with a young male aide -- have been concocted to end his career.
Major newspapers and broadcasters are closely linked with the ruling coalition, so the Internet has become a lively forum for dissent and debate in Malaysia.
Unlike the mainstream press, the web and online media have remained relatively free, despite occasional raids, bans and government criticism.
Last Friday, police detained political cartoonist Zulkifli Anwar Ulhaque -- better known as Zunar -- over his new comic book, which has a caricature of Najib's wife on the front cover and contains cartoons on numerous controversial issues such as Anwar's sodomy trial and police shootings.

Perkasa anti anti-racism, anti-1Malaysia. Support Namewee=1Malaysia! Namewee's poster torched outside KLSCAH
Malaysiakini reported:
A group of 50 protesters from Malay rights group Perkasa gathered outside the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) in Kuala Lumpur tonight to protest against controversial rapper Namewee as he was about to speak at a youth forum.
Asked by journalists for his reaction to the protest, Namewee said: “I have no comment, I'm not politician. I came here to for an anti-racism event.”
But they came for you?
It's not my problem.
They burn your photos...
Not my business - they burn my photo, not me.
Will you apologise as demanded by Perkasa?
No, apologising is not the point. I'm here to help solve the issue of racism.
Are you scared of Perkasa?
I'm not scared. I believe the police will protect me.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat pretends to be a progressive party but it is not!
EXCLUSIVE The truth can be a bitter pill to swallow when it is not flattering.
And the truth about PKR, in the eyes of deputy presidential hopeful Zaid Ibrahim, is that the party and its leaders are not being honest with themselves.Zaid stressed that there is nothing that he has experienced in the party which indicates that it is ready to play a leading role as an agent of change in the political arena and said, “PKR pretends to be a progressive party but it's not, and we have to move to the next level. (The direct elections are) part of the learning process, so we should respect the ketua cabang (division heads)... don't pressure them. If they want to nominate (Batu MP) Tian Chua, let it be. If they want to nominate (Padang Serai MP N) Gobala(krishnan), let it be..."
While there is always a danger of falling into the same trap that has ensnared Umno, where a “certain class of people” are allowed to entrench themselves in the system with little room for anyone else, the core of Zaid's message is to impress on all PKR members that only when they reach a level of sophistication and maturity that assures a stable democracy, can they safely say that they are worthy of representing the interests of the people

Pak Lah, why is Malaysia not united after 53-year rule under Umno-led BN?
By Melissa Chi
September 27, 2010
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — Malaysia should have been united by now but ongoing talks show otherwise, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today.
The former prime minister told the National Unity Forum 2010 here that the fact that he had to address the national unity issue showed little progress towards a united nation.
“Malaysia should already be united today,” he said, adding that he did not believe that there will be reforms until there is a change in the mindset of the people.
Abdullah (picture), who was prime minister from October 2003 to April 2009, said he does not want to see the country “burned” over by issues such as racism, favouritism and politically-motivated agendas.
Despite its flaws, he said Malaysia still has a very special place in his heart and should be appreciated by Malaysians.
“Malaysia will always be a home that gives us happiness and lets us enjoy prosperity and its diversity,” said Abdullah.
Pak Lah, you're totally clueless as to why Malaysia is not united until today? The answer is before you. Racism when Umno talks about Malays, MCA talks about Chinese, MIC talks about Indians. Favouritism when meritocracy is not in place. Politically-motivated agendas when 1Malaysia is nothing but an empty vessel! Well, you know the saying - an empty vessel makes the most noise!

Branson urges Najib to halt Sodomy II trial: Malaysia 'exporting' sodomy! ;)
Branson urges Najib to halt Sodomy II trial
By Yow Hong Chieh
September 27, 2010
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson has called on the Malaysian prime minister to intervene in Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy trial, calling the issue “a thorn” in Malaysia’s otherwise good reputation.
“If you’re a bold leader, you should get rid of things like this which are damaging your reputation,” he said today at the “Dawn of the New Decade: Alternative Investments in Asia” conference here.
“This has gone on for a long, long time. It looks bad overseas.”
While Branson did not think Anwar’s Sodomy II trial was causing foreign investors to shy away from Malaysia in any major way, the mercurial entrepreneur nonetheless said more people would want to invest in Malaysia if it were more open and liberal.
He added that it was incumbent on the prime minister to address the “damaging” trial as good leaders looked after their citizens well, much like how good employers take care of their employees.
Branson was speaking at the “Dawn of the New Decade - Alternative Investments in Asia” forum in the capital hosted by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA). He went on after MIDA Director-general Datuk Jalilah Baba gave her address.
Anwar, the 62-year-old PKR de facto leader, is charged with sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, at Unit 11-5-1 of the Desa Damansara Condominium in Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara here between 3.01pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.
The former deputy prime minister has denied the charge, describing it as “evil, frivolous lies by those in power” when the charge was read out to him. He is charged under section 377B of the Penal Code and can be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years’ jail and whipping upon conviction. The trial is taking place 18 months after Anwar was charged in court in August 2008.
Anwar was charged with sodomy and corruption in 1998 after he was sacked from the Cabinet and was later convicted and jailed for both offences.
He was freed in September 2004 and later resurrected his political career by winning back his Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in a by-election in 2008, which had been held in the interim by his wife.
He had earlier led the opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, to a historic sweep of five states and 82 parliamentary seats in Election 2008.
Anwar’s Sodomy II trial will resume on October 14.

Abraham, God's best friend: Prelude to destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah!!
Genesis 18 (New King James Version)
Genesis 18
The Son of Promise
1 Then the LORD appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre,[a] as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. 2 So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground,
Abraham bowed himself to the ground |
3 and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. 4 Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. 5 And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant.”
They said, “Do as you have said.”
6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.” 7 And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it. 8 So he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate.
9 Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?”
So he said, “Here, in the tent.”
10 And He said, “I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.”
(Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.) 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.[b] 12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”
13 And the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”
15 But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid.
And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”
Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
16 Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way. 17 And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” 20 And the LORD said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, 21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”
22 Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. 23 And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
26 So the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”
27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: 28 Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?”
So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.”
29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?”
So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.”
30 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?”
So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31 And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?”
So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.”
32 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?”
And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” 33 So the LORD went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

Mahathir a 'Mugabe' just as Guan Eng a 'Hitler': Koh 'frantic', 'desperate'
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator Koh Tsu Koon has lashed out at both DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and his son, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, for being 'leaders who oppose for the sake of opposing'. Kit Siang received the first salvo for denouncing Prime Minister's Najib Abdul Razak's Economic Transformation Programme as 'rich in rhetoric, business-school cliches and lofty speeches' and being 'unfair and insulting' to the 500-odd participants, mostly corporate and business representatives, who attended the programme on Tuesday. Kit Siang, Koh added, sounded 'frantic and desperate' in his criticisms about the programme, though which the former did not attend. Koh said that those who did not attend the programme were not qualified to talk about it. (Source: Malaysiakini)
Wah, really? So, that means only those 500-odd participants who attended had the right to talk about it? I am quite certain that not all MPs attended the programme. So, that means they are not qualified to talk about it? Come on, Koh. I believe you have a better argument than that! I guess you're just talking cock!

IF it is true that Malays could lose power, it is also true that non-Malays could lose power!
An excerpt from Bernama report entitled 'Malays Could Lose Power On Three Grounds - Rais':
On the Opposition's claim that the government's statement on the Malay rights is against the 1Malaysia concept, he said it was a narrow view and not based on the Constitution.
"Article 153 of the Constitution mentioned the Malay rights as well as the legitimate interests of others communities," he said, adding that ironically only the Malay rights were harped on.
MCA, MIC and 'dan-lain-lain' component party of BN, why are you so quiet?
Why are you not fighting for the rights of the non-Malays like the Opposition? The answer is simple: All of you are Umno running dogs!

Police after Teo Nie Ching, MP and civilian. No time to catch real criminals!
The police have started investigating the police report on Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching's presence in a surau last month that sparked a controversy over her alleged religious speech and the way she had dressed.
When contacted by Malaysiakini today, Teo said that the Kajang district police headquarters called her yesterday evening asking her to come in for questioning today but she declined, saying that she was too busy and no other dates have been set as yet.
Teo (left) also said that, when asked, the police refused to tell her under which Act she is being investigated. Also, the police didn't want to give her a copy of the police report lodged against me and didn't even want to tell her who made that police report.
Teo said that she asked them and they didn't want to answer.

Celebrities saying goodbye to Twitter: John Mayer, Miley Cyrus, Amanda Bynes, LeAnn Rimes, Demi Lovato - all 'victims' of New New Media
WHEN singer John Mayer (right), one of Twitter’s most high-profile users with 3.7 million followers, shut his account last Monday, he was just the latest celebrity to quit the micro-blogging site.
Some stars are finding that Twitter may be great as a promotional tool or for reaching out to fans, but it also comes with a downside.
Teen singer Miley Cyrus deleted her account a year ago, persuaded into silence by her new boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth, while Hairspray star Amanda Bynes deleted her Twitter account last week without any notice to her fans.
Earlier this month, Disney starlet Demi Lovato, 18, tweeted that she’s saying "goodbye to twitter" because "the access that the other people have is uncomfortable to me".
"The blessing of tweeting for celebrities was this idea that you could bypass sending out a press release and go directly to those who are following you," said Robert Thompson, professor of Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University.
However, many celebrities have found that their tweets are being made fun of, or have them blown up in their faces.
Although Bynes, 24, offered no explanation for quitting Twitter, she seems to have had a volatile relationship with the so-called "Twitterverse".
The actress got flack for announcing on Twitter that she was retiring from acting earlier this year, and then subsequently "un-retiring" a month later.
"Many celebrities are realising the old saying that familiarity breeds contempt," Thompson told Reuters. "We used to think that celebrities were distant people we could never communicate with. Twitter reversed that and some celebrities are growing tired of that."
After Rimes and Cibrian divorced their spouses, the duo was photographed kissing each other, which sparked outrage. The singer began to get attacked on Twitter but when she tried to defend herself on the site, users retaliated even more.
Rimes closed her account in July, tweeting that it was "unhealthy for me and my family to have to read negative comments".
Paul Levinson, author of New New Media, says Twitter has now reached a sort of "shaking out point".
"Those who joined as part of a bandwagon because their peers were on the site, are now finding out if it’s truly a medium that works for them." – ReutersLife!

Malay-first Muhyiddin cannot decide fate of 'racist' Bkt Selambau principal!
The Education Ministry cannot decide the fate of the 'racist' Bukit Selambau principal, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the education minister.
Muhyiddin said as the minister he could not make any decision on government officers with the pay grade of 48 and above and he believed principals are grade 52.
The Pagoh parliamentarian explained, saying, “For officers of such a grade only the disciplinary board of the Public Services Department (PSD) headed by the director-general can take action.”
Muhyiddin added that the ministry had done its own investigation. The results of the investigation had been handed over to the public service commission to consider and mete out their decision.

Now I see who Idris Jala is! He is nothing more than a PR prattler!
Please go to Lim Kit Siang's blog and read an article by Kee Thuan Chye - 'If it's a problem, don't recognise it'. Very well written and worth noting, it appeared in Malaysiakini on Sep 22, 2010.
Read it. We need to be alert and not be conned by "sales talk". Basically, the article zoomed in on Idris' speech at UCSI about Malaysians moving from merely tolerating each other to celebrating the differences or celebrating diversity.
He also talked about two two types of issues and in his own words, “in life, there are only two types of issues”. They are problem and polarity - the former is something that can be solved while the latter is something that cannot be solved but must be managed. He likened polarity to a relationship between husband and wife and illustrated by giving the example of his wife and him. She is fastidious in wanting him to place his socks in a proper basket for washing, but he is used to leaving them all over the house. Despite her repeated attempts to get him to conform, he is incorrigible. She on her part takes an inordinate amount of time to get ready when they have a function to attend. It annoys him that because she can't decide on what to wear, they often turn up late.
Ahh...so, there you have it! The polarity in Malaysia is the Malays and non-Malays or the Muslims and non-Muslims. So, the Malays have to accept the non-Malays' way of life just as much as the non-Malays have to accept the Malays'. Don't change the status quo. Don't force one's view upon another. The Catholics have been using the word 'Allah' in the Herald publication for years. If talk about polarity and managing, then the Catholics should not be stopped from using the word 'Allah' - just like you don't stop your wife from taking an inordinate amount of time to prepare herself and she doesn't stop you from leaving your socks all over the house!

RPK's son acquitted of theft, break and entry charges: Still has two charges
The son of fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin's son was today acquitted of two charges of theft and breaking and entering.
In her judgement, Shah Alam Magistrate Court Judge Norkamilah Aziz said that the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case against Raja Azman Raja Petra (left) and according to Raja Azman's lawyer, J Chandra, the accused still has two other charges of theft pending against him.
When contacted today, J Chandra said, “We will submit for a disposal of these charges following the decision today.”
Raja Azman, 33, was arrested on May 6 and had on May 19 plead guilty to breaking into a house and stealing a number of items, including a mobile phone and a wrist watch. Later, he changed his plea and claimed trial in June, and claimed trial for all charges, including to stealing a motorcycle.

Bold RM1.4 trillion plan to transform economy? MORE $$$ FOR CRONIES!
Malaysia on Tuesday unveiled ambitious plans to boost its economy by mobilising hundreds of billions of dollars of private investment, although questions remained over whether the money would materialise.
The ambitious plans ranged from a new mass transit system to relieve congestion in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, to building a huge oil storage facility next to neighbouring Singapore to form a regional oil products trading hub.
The ambitious plans ranged from a new mass transit system to relieve congestion in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, to building a huge oil storage facility next to neighbouring Singapore to form a regional oil products trading hub.
Investments worth RM1.376 trillion (US$444 billion) over 10 years had been identified by a government thinkthank, of which 60 percent would come from the private sector, 32 percent from government-linked companies and 8 percent from government
The aim of the investment is to double per capita income and push Malaysia into the ranks of "developed" nations by 2020, rebalancing Asia's third most export-driven economy towards domestic demand and the service sector.
What happened to all the investments during the years of mega projects under Mahahthir's administration? What has happened to the economy? Where has all the money gone to? I guess the real losers are Malaysians when the 'ROI' is nothing but 'kickback' for a privileged few!

Pemandu cracks whip over civil service - Why not take a leaf from Singapore's success: How did Singapore tackle graft effectively?
EXCLUSIVE Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Idris Jala may not be a politician, having been roped into the cabinet from an illustrious corporate career, but he sure knows how to evade a question.
It is Pemandu's role as a troubleshooter - or 'catalyst' in Idris' words - that will eventually transform the way the civil service and private sector do things and will crack the whip for as long as it takes for the transformation to turn to habit. To ensure that they themselves do not become jaded, all Pemandu staff are on a three-year contract.
Idris said, "Every Friday we hold a problem-solving meeting. When someone comes to us with a problem in getting approval from a government department, we will write and ask why was it not approved (and work on those reasons)."

Admittedly, I am far from being an economist but I think Pemandu has a thing or two to learn from Singapore.

SINGAPORE: Surrounded by graft-ridden Asian neighbours, Singapore has won international accolades as one of the least corrupt countries in the world.
Did Singapore always have a reputation for lack of graft?
No. At the time Singapore attained self-government in 1959, corruption was rife and permeated through all sectors of society. The law to fight corruption was weak and graft fighters were not given sufficient power to carry out their duties effectively.
Public officers were not paid well relative to those in the private sector. Some of them became indebted due to lack of savings to tide them over difficult times.
The population was generally less educated and did not know their rights, resorting to offering bribery to public officers to get things done.
What triggered the change?
After independence in 1965, the new political leaders set an example for bureaucrats to follow by divesting themselves of financial and commercial ties.
The law was revamped to give more power to graft fighters, and punishments for corruption offences were enhanced.
Salaries for public officers were raised to be comparable to the private sector while bureaucratic procedures were simplified significantly to improve efficiency and lower the chance of public officials demanding bribes.
How tough are the laws?
The anti-corruption law has been reviewed regularly.
Anybody convicted of a corruption offence can be fined up to S$100,000 (RM232,507.30) and/or sentenced to imprisonment of up to five years. If the offence relates to a government contract or involves a Member of Parliament or a member of a public body, the jail term can be increased to seven years.
Also, a person convicted of a corruption offence will be ordered by the court to return the bribe, and court is empowered to confiscate property and pecuniary resources which a convicted person cannot satisfactorily account for.
A public officer convicted of corruption will also lose his job, pension and other benefits.
Why does it work in Singapore?
A shorter chain of command in a compact country like Singapore helps, analysts said.
It is easier to create a climate of good governance in a city-state where the population is constantly reminded of the perils of corruption and its consequences.
Public tolerance of corruption is almost zero.
The fact that the law in both Singapore and Hong Kong is based on the British legal also helps maintain the confidence of international businesses when they have to deal with lawsuits on fraud or corruption.
"In business, when you are a victim of a fraud or corruption, companies have confidence in being able to use the Singapore judicial system to fight abuses," said Bob Broadfoot of Political & Economic Risk Consultancy. — Reuters

Will KTMB now be taking us for a PKFZ ride? PHB pay only RM50m for eight-hectare land?
The Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) fiasco had taught the public much of how projects could inflate into a fullblown controversy following cost overruns and other irregularities - all at the expense of taxpayers and to the benefit of politicians and their cronies.
The question on the mind of Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, who has demanded to know the fate and future of the property, and which has been estimated to be worth at least RM300 million is: Will we see the same, sordid saga following the transfer by railway firm Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTMB) of land it owned in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, to property developer Pelaburan Hartanah Berhad (PHB)?
It was earlier reported that KTMB had transferred eight hectares of land situated behind the former Unilever headquarters on Jalan Bangsar to Pelaburan Hartanah Bumiputra Bhd - now known as Pelaburan Hartanah Bhd (PHB) - allegedly far below the property's market value and said to be worth at least RM400 million, theSun reported last month that the national railway company may be paid only RM50 million by PHB for the prime real estate.
Here's the article by theSun:
‘Unrail’ deal for KTMB
Terence Fernandez
sreports@thesundaily.com
KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 1, 2010): Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) is expected to get RM200 million for its prime land in Bangsar. It is still less than half the value for the 8ha property which was the former headquarters of Unilever Bhd, but far more than the RM50 million offered for handing over the land to Pelaburan Hartanah Bhd (PHB).
Even so, there are efforts to reduce KTMB’s returns for the sale of the property, now said to be valued at around RM500 million.
According to sources, former transport minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat had approved transfer of the land to PHB last year but it is understood that fresh negotiations are on to reduce the figure.
theSun had on Aug 27 front-paged the deal where the land was acquired from KTMB for a fraction of its market value, raising concerns among several parties. One of them was Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek who as KTMB chairman in 2008 had raised the matter with then prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Lim protested that the RM50 million compensation offered by PHB was far less than the market value of the property – which in 2007 was almost RM300 million.
PHB is a subsidiary of Yayasan Amanah Hartanah Bumiputera, created under Budget 2006 with an initial capital of RM2 billion to increase bumiputra property ownership.
It is learnt that when Ong became minister in 2008, he asked for a more equitable figure.
“PHB then offered RM100 million but Ong refused as it was only a third of the market value,” said a source, adding that it would not be enough to pull KTMB, which had more than RM100 million in losses, out of the red.
“Following this, there was pressure from all sides, including the Finance Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office, on Ong to sign the deal, after which he agreed to approve it for RM200 million,” the source added.
When contacted, Ong was tight-lipped but admitted that he had reservations over the deal. “I had raised my concerns but was also reminded of the (then) prime minister’s commitment,” he said, declining to elaborate.
Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) general manager Abdul Kadir Ab Latiff had told theSun that the compensation to KTMB would be more than RM50 million but declined to say more.
The land had been eyed by various quarters for development. PHB, which had also purchased Dataran Perdana in Jalan Davis and the Rubber Research Institute land in Jalan Ampang, is expected to embark on a high-end mixed development project next year.
Transport Ministry officials declined comment.

Now every Tom Ting and Terry can translate! Ting Chin Kin, you are as incompetent as Abdul Razak Musa
The credibility of the interpretation of the note said to be deceased DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock's final testament was put into question today when the court interpreter said she had relied on Google Translate to do the job. The court interpreter, Ting Chin Kin, 23, who has “almost one year's experience” in the field, admitted that she did not use any professional translation references when cross-examined by Gobind Singh Deo, the lawyer for Teoh's family.
The note, which was tendered as evidence today, was only made known to the family and Selangor government attorneys last month, although it was found by the investigating officer on Oct 7 last year and reads like an apology addressed to Teoh's boss and state exco member Ean Yong.
The note handed to Ting, on Sept 4, reads:
Ean Yong, Dalam keadaan tak menyalin file dalam komputer saya mereka telah ambil komputer. Mereka asyik menyalahkan kamu. Minta maaf. Tidak mengerti tapi pura-pura mengerti, akhirnya menyusahkan kamu.
Saya kata 'mendapat kelulusan YB'. Mereka berdegil menaip menjadi 'mengikut arahan YB'. Saya tak dapat membantu kamu, maaf. Minta maaf. Saya amat penat. Selamat tinggal.
(Ean Yong, Without copying the file in my computer, they have taken the computer. I'm sorry. They are fond of blaming you. Don't understand but pretend to understand, in the end, this has inconvenienced you.
(I said 'obtained the YB's approval' but they insist on typing 'on the YB's instructions'. I can't help you, sorry. I'm sorry. I'm very tired. Goodbye.)

Teoh inquest: Mystery note tendered as exhibit - BREAKING NEWS: updated 1.20pm
The inquest into the death of DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock has resumed with investigating officer Ahmad Nazri Zainal taking the stand.
Ahmad Nazri had testified this morning that MACC officer Zurinawati Zulkifli - who alerted him to the presence of the bag - had refused to sign a handover form because she was not assigned to the case for which Teoh had been called for questioning and Zurinawati told him that the MACC investigating officer on the case, Mohd Anuar Ismail who was not present at the time, had initially taken the bag into his office.
However, Ahmad Nazri said that, when he saw the bag, it was on a sofa outside another officer's office. It was a black bag. The black bag with its main contents were tendered as exhibits today.

Maglin, the Umno stooge, asks the Catholic community to open to dialogue
September 19, 2010
SEPT 19 — Newly-minted Information Deputy Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D’Cruz took some time to get into the news cycle but did a fine job yesterday asking the Catholic community to keep their hearts open to dialogue with the government in addressing any problems.
National news agency Bernama, which is under his ministry’s watch, reported him as saying that through these dialogues, the government would have better understanding of the needs of the community.
“No one will know our needs if we do not explain or tell them,” he said at the St Mary Catholic Society’s dinner in conjunction with its centenary celebration here.
That really isn’t an issue or a problem, dear deputy minister.
While you might not have alluded to any problems, the biggest issue this year began just a day before New Year’s Eve when the High Court in Kuala Lumpur agreed that the Catholic Church has a constitutional right to use the word Allah to describe the Christian God in its Bahasa Malaysia publication.
The government through the Attorney-General’s Chambers have since applied and received a stay of execution pending their appeal to a higher court. There has been no date set for the appeal and the High Court decision remains a paper victory.
Be that as it may, what use is a dialogue after the government unilaterally decided that the Roman Catholic Church cannot use the word Allah in its publication? Was there a dialogue before the decision was made?
After all, the publication is clearly marked for non-Muslims.
These are the questions one expects a minister or deputy minister to ask before shooting from the hip and advising a community to be open to dialogue.
A dialogue is only possible among two equals. Otherwise it is a monologue.
D’Cruz must see the chronology of the issue before asking the community to open its heart to a dialogue. There was never a problem until the executive decided it was a problem, as far as the Allah issue is concerned.
Even then, it isn’t a problem with Muslims outside the ruling government, according to Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa when he read excerpts from his book “Menuju PAS baru” at the Central Market Annexe today.
A dialogue is great. But D’Cruz asked the wrong party to open its heart to a dialogue. He should instead tell that to the government that he serves.
Joseph moved from success to significance.
Joseph or Yosef (Hebrew: יוֹסֵף , Standard Yosef Tiberian Yôsēp̄, Arabic: يوسف, Yusuf ; "May Yahweh add"[1]) was the eleventh of Jacob's twelve sons in the Hebrew Bible.[2] Joseph was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, but rose to become the most powerful man in Egypt after Pharaoh. He then brought his entire family down to Egypt, where they were settled in the land of Goshen. (Source: Wikipedia)
Two things marked the life of Joseph - success and significance. These are the two verses that tell us of his success:
- Genesis 39:3
When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did,
Genesis 39:2-4 (in Context) Genesis 39 (Whole Chapter) - Genesis 39:23
The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
Genesis 39:22-23 (in Context) Genesis 39 (Whole Chapter)
Lastly, Joseph move from success to significance when all Egypt began to feel the famine, the people cried to Pharaoh for food. Then Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph and do what he tells you." (Ge 41: 55)

Umno-owned Utusan politicise, racialise and lies - FAILS '1Malaysia Test'!
Excerpt from Lim Kit Siang's blog post:
Utusan Malaysia, the Umno mouthpiece, will not only fail these tests but will be among the most egregious offenders, breaching these three tests on a daily basis.
In fact, Utusan has reached a new low as illustrated by its irresponsible and contemptible attempt to racialise and politicise the heinous and gruesome mass murders of Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and three others against the DAP when it has nothing to do whatsoever with DAP.
In fact, Utusan has reached a new low as illustrated by its irresponsible and contemptible attempt to racialise and politicise the heinous and gruesome mass murders of Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and three others against the DAP when it has nothing to do whatsoever with DAP.
Utusan Malaysia is guilty of double lies against DAP as none of the suspect killers were DAP members let alone DAP life-members, but also because DAP had condemned the heinous and gruesome mass killings right from the beginning.
When news broke on Sept. 12 of the horrific mass murders of Datuk Sosilawati, DAP Secretary-General and Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng, who was in Shanghai tweeted his “shock”, condemned the quadruple murders as “ghastly” and extended condolences to the families of the victims of the “horrible tragedy” of the mass murders.
I was also in Shanghai for the World Expo. In my first press conference and public statement on my return from Shanghai, made in Kota Kinabalu on Sept. 15, I condemned in the strongest possible terms the heinous, gruesome crimes of the mass murders of Sosilawati.
Yet Utusan Malaysia could publish such garbage the next day on Sept. 16 to insinuate that the DAP is siding with the mass murderers and had been silent on the mass murders either because the “Datuk” killer is DAP member or DAP “fights for the rights of a certain race only”.
I have a video recording of my press conference in Kota Kinabalu on Sept. 15 condemning the mass murders of Datuk Sosiloawati and three others but I do not think the Utusan Malaysia editors would dare to ask to view them.
Coming back to Najib’s 1Malaysia test. Najib should do something simpler – ask his Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and all his Ministers at next Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting whether they are prepared to be Malaysians first and race second as a first step to show their support and loyalty to his 1Malaysia concept, and if not, to tell them that they have no place in his Cabinet and government if his 1Malaysia concept is not to be taken as an empty and meaningless slogan!

Sosilawati Murder: Polis goyang kaki sambil makan gaji dan minum kopi?!
The Star Online reported - Cops find remains believed to be of 20 people.
How did the police miss these 20 'missing-and-murdered' people? I shudder at the thought of the possibility of more 'non-Datuk' people murdered by these two 'lawyer' brothers if Datuk Sosilawati did not end up dead.
So, why did Najib congratulate the cops for solving the case fast when the cops should have acted much faster?!
In the meantime, a lawyer of Lawyers for Liberty, wrote an article for press release today. It is entitled 'Sosilawati’s case: Don’t be so quick to praise the police'.
So, what had the police been doing before the murder of Sosilawati and three others and while there were up 20 'missing-and-murdered' people? Goyang kaki sambil makan gaji dan minum kopi?
Teng! Teng! Teng! EGM on auspicious 10.10.10 to oust Gerakan's Teng!
A group within the embattled Parti Gerakan, dubbed "voice of the grassroots", submitted 60 signatures to the state liason committee today calling for an extraordinary general meeting to get chairperson Teng Hock Nan to step down, appealing to the 393 state delegates to cast a vote of no-confidence against Teng (below) on Oct 10 and to decide the future direction of the party, which ruled Penang from 1969 until the March 2008 political tsunami.
According to an anonymous source, two members submitted the petition for the EGM and a press conference scheduled for this evening had been called off.
Asked why was the signatures were submitted in a low key affair, the member said it was because it was an internal party matter.

Plan to Use ‘Killer’ Mosquitoes vs Dengue Draws Fire
By Baradan Kuppusamy
KUALA LUMPUR, Sep 17, 2010 (IPS) - Genetically modified ‘terminator’ mosquitoes are the latest weapons that the Malaysian government wants to use against the deadly dengue fever, but activists and environmentalists say the public health risks of introducing a new ‘artificial’ strain of mosquito are far too high.
The government has discussed plans to release in December male ‘terminator’ mosquitoes with ‘killer’ genes that would lead to a reduction in the population of the Aedes mosquito, which carries and transmits the dengue virus to humans.
Under what would be a pilot project devised by British and Malaysian scientists, the genetically engineered male Aedes mosquitoes would pass on – when they mate with the wild female of the species – lethal genes that would kill the larvae of the female.

This is supposed to lead to an eventual fall in the number of dengue-carrying mosquitoes, especially the females that are the ones that transmit the dengue virus.

Najib, take the REAL 1Malaysia test: Are you a Malaysian first? Or Malay?!

Take the 1Malaysia test when faced with racial issues, PM urges
By LEE YUK PENG and P. ARUNA
KUALA LUMPUR: Take the "1Malaysia test" when confronted with racial issues, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has urged Malaysians. The question to ask oneself is whether one's actions could affect people of other races and religions, he said. "Would you be promoting harmony and unity or inciting hatred towards your own race? "Could your actions lead to better understanding among people of different races or the contrary?"
Why is the 1Malaysia test all about one's own race versus people of other races and religions?
Mr. PM, why are you not honouring your own 1Malaysia goal that is to make Malaysia more vibrant, more productive and more competitive – and ultimately a greater nation: a nation where, it is hoped, every Malaysian perceives himself or herself as Malaysian first, and by race, religion, geographical region or socio-economic background second...? If you cannot declare yourself as Malaysian first, Malay second, you are not fit to be PM of 1Malaysia!

Malaysia Day: Sabah, Sarawak 'milking cows' for West M'sia for 47 years!!
MALAYSIA DAY Today's Malaysia Day celebrations ring hollow among the rural folk of Sabah and Sarawak, as they continue to trudge through a hard life that doesn't look much different from 47 years ago.
As the governments, political parties and NGOs commemorate the formation of Malaysia for the first time, many in East Malaysia will continue to do whatever they have been doing simply to survive before night descends on their rickety homes. They probably don't even realise that the big cities are "honouring" the contributions their home states have made in creating the country simply because there are no potable water or electricity supply or even proper roads to connect them to the rest of the world,
This is the reality facing at least 50 percent of those living in both Sabah and Sarawak, that collectively account for roughly six million people, stressed the president of Indigenous Network of Malaysia (JOAS), Adrian Lasimbang (far left).
"The federal government has to do more than declare a public holiday and needs to put in a serious programme of work to develop both Sabah and Sarawak," he said when contacted while running a mini-hydroelectric project in the Bakun area and he added, saying, "All this while, Sabah and Sarawak have been like milking cows for the west (Malaysia)... I've done a lot of work in the rural areas, and even for basic things the government has failed to provide."

Idris Jala's take on 1Malaysia concept: Perkasa IS tolerating non-Malays!!!
Government policy alone will not be enough to put the nation on the 1Malaysia path, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Idris Jala.
"The way to become 1Malaysia is not through government policy but through behavioural change. Every Malaysian needs to look at themselves and see which rung of the ladder they are at and work towards celebrating diversity," he told the plenary at UCSI University's National Congress on Integrity today.
Malaysians, he said, should move from merely tolerating each other to celebrating the differences. According to Idris, tolerating each other meant one didn't mind having someone as his neighbor but he would be happy if the neighbor left but when one celebrated diversity, he would celebrate the achievements of others - welcoming the neighbor to his home and wishing he was like the neighbor.
Idris however glazed over the issue when asked by press how this concept of celebrating diversity would appeal to groups like vocal Malay-rights NGO Perkasa.

Ahh...so, based on Idris' take, Perkasa IS tolerating the non-Malays. I believe the only way for behavioural change is through changing the status quo - no more race-based politics!
