New IGP pledges to give his best

2010-09-13 14:55

KUALA LUMPUR, Monday 13 September 2010 (Bernama) -- Tan Sri Ismail Omar took office today as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and pledged to give his best in the service of the people and nation within the ambit of the law and the powers vested in him.
Ismail, who had been the Deputy IGP, said the heavy responsibility he shouldered as the IGP needed the strong cooperation and support of the police officers and personnel in realising the objectives of the police force.
"No IGP can discharge his duties without the assistance and support of his officers and personnel. I will give my best, just like the eight IGPs before me," he said at the ceremony to hand over duties to the new Deputy IGP Datuk Hussin Ismail, hitherto the Director of Internal Security and Public Order, at the Bukit Aman Officers' Mess, here.
Ismail, 57, said much of his first day in office would be devoted to meetings with all police directors, deputy directors and state chief police officers.
Hussin, also 57, in his speech at the ceremony, said he would give his full support to Ismail in the implementation of plans, policies and strategies.
"I will also discharge my duties with full commitment for the good of the police force," he said.
Ismail succeeds Tan Sri Musa Hassan whose contract of service as the IGP ended yesterday. Musa had served the police force for 41 years.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein announced the appointments of Ismail and Hussin on Sept 1.

Personally, I don't believe the crime index has been reduced as reported by The Star Online on 18 May 2010. I have a friend whose necklace was recently snatched on the same day that a breast cancer survivor was stabbed by a snatch thief on a pedestrian bridge.

A few friends of mine were robbed in the past but did not bother to report to the police. Reason being, they believed the police who were 'numb' to petty crimes like snatch thefts would not bother to take any action.

I welcome the new IGP's pledge to give it his all in fighting crime.

We shall see if under his leadership, the police will be busy catching civilians who protest or catching criminals!

I absolutely agree. The new IGP should strive for BETTER, not as good as the past IGPs! My niece was assaulted and robbed in Dublin, Ireland recently. Soon after reporting to police, she was informed that the criminal was caught! That was really cekap! On the contrary, my nephew was robbed right here in the city of Malaysia, at knife point. He reported to the police and the police was able to trace the gateaway car plus owner, but nothing happen after that! No justice??
