'Tree assembly' video maker's charge deferred: Selective prosecution

The charge against Tebing Tinggi assemblyperson Ong Boon Piow for possession of DVDs not approved by the film censorship board has been deferred.

NONEAccording to Ong, the charge was supposed to have been read out at the Ipoh Magistrate's Court thiis morning but was deferred on instruction of the state prosecution chief.
When contacted, Ong said, “They are waiting for further instructions from Putrajaya.”

Ong was ordered by the police yesterday evening to appear before at the Magistrate's Court today to be charged under the Section 6 of the Film Censorship Act 2002 for failing to obtain the approval from the film censorship board, apparently for producing copies of his video recording of the 'tree assembly' on March 3 last year.

DAP chairperson Ngeh Khoo Ham said the same should be applied of Perak MCA for distributing DVDs containing footage of the May 7, 2009 Perak state assembly sitting. "If not, charging Ong smacks of selective prosecution," said Ngeh.
