Malaysia Day thoughts: When is Malaysia Day? What is Malaysia Day? How will you be celebrating Malaysia Day?

PETALING JAYA: Many may know the day after tomorrow — Thursday, Sept 16 — is a public holiday. But, not many are aware the holiday is to celebrate Malaysia Day, commemorating the establishment of Malaysia.
The Paper That Cares took to the streets to ask three simple questions about Malaysia Day. You'll be surprised by some of the answers we got from our proud citizens!
The questions we asked were:
1. When is Malaysia Day?
2. What is Malaysia Day?
3. How will you be celebrating Malaysia Day?
M. Thiruvarasu
M. Thiruvarasu, 26, advertising and promotions officer, Puchong:
"I know about Malaysia Day because history was my favourite subject in school! I still remember some historical facts I read in school textbooks."
1. Sept 16.
2. Malaysia Day is the day Sabah and Sarawak joined the peninsula to form Malaysia.
3. I'll be spending it with my family because I have a day off. We'll probably go somewhere nice for a meal.
Lim Li Yin, 15, student, Puchong:
"I know about Malaysia Day because it was mentioned in the Form 3 history text book. I think it was in the last chapter."
1. Sept 16, 1963.
2. It's the day when Sabah and Sarawak joined the peninsula.
3. I have to go to the tuition centre.
Lim Sin Yin, 16, student, Petaling Jaya:
"I remember reading about it in the newspapers. It was announced Malaysia Day will be a public holiday."
1. Sept 16, 1963.
2. It's the day when Sabah and Sarawak joined the peninsula.
3. I'll be at home with my family, thinking of ways to celebrate my brother's birthday, which is on Sept 17.
Etienne Liew
Etienne Liew, 27, sales executive, Kuala Lumpur:
"I have to be honest that I'm not aware about Malaysia Day. I only know about it because a friend told me."
1. It's either this Thursday or Friday.
2. Isn't it in conjunction with 1Malaysia? To celebrate 1Malaysia?
3. I'll be working, so I'll be celebrating it there. Lailatul Zuraida Harun, 40, lawyer, Petaling Jaya:
"I remember it because it was declared a public holiday."
1. Sept 16.
2. It's the day when Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula joined together to form Malaysia.
3. I'll continue to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa since it's a public holiday.
Ooi Kam Yoke, 27, accounts supervisor, Kemuning Utama:
"I remember reading it on the Internet. I think it was two years ago when Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said we should be celebrating Malaysia Day."

2. It's the day Malaysia was formed.
3. I don't know, but I think the celebration should be something like Merdeka Day.
Thipamala Manikam, 33, businessman, Shah Alam:
"I still remember that I studied it in school!"
1. Sept 16.
2. It's when Malaysia was formed.
3. I'll be spending the day with my family.
Prema Rajamanickam, 30, entrepreneur, Klang:
"I know about it through some friends."
1. Sept 16.
2. It's the day that Sabah and Sarawak join the peninsula.
3. I'll be at home with friends and family.
Norhayati Lihin, 29, clerk, Ampang:
"I remember the date because I read about it in the newspapers and had seen the news on TV. Plus, it marks another public holiday in the calendar!"
1. Sept 16.
2. To celebrate 1Malaysia.
3. I'll be spending the day with my parents.
Badrul Fikli Alwi
Badrul Fikli Alwi, 45, marketing director, Bangi:
"I know about it from the newspaper and from the internet."
1. Sept 16.
2. It's the day when Malaysia was formed.
3. It's a public holiday, so I'll be taking my children out.
Shane Lee, 32, sales manager, Kuala Lumpur:
"I think it's a very good approach to celebrate Malaysia Day instead of Aug 31."
1. Sept 16.
2. A day to remember and emphasise 1Malaysia, to educate the public on this concept.
3. Will spend time at home.
Ng Kian Siong, 42, printing executive, Johor Baru:
"It's something like celebrating Merdeka Day."
1. Sept 16.
2. 1Malaysia, where all races celebrate together.
3. I will spend time with my family at home.
Alex Chok, 22, student, Sabah:
"I'm very well aware about it as it's a big celebration in Sabah, where I come from."
1. Sept 16.
2. Formation of 1Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak merged with the peninsula.
3. I will stay at home and have some plans with friends.
Mohd Amirul Naim
Mohd Amirul Naim, 21, student, Kuala Lumpur:
"We celebrate it this month."
1. Sometime in September.
2. A day to remind all Malaysians on togetherness, to create awareness of 1Malaysia's importance.
3. I will celebrate with my friends.
Lisha Chen, 30, marketing executive, Kuala Lumpur:
"I don't really know the reason for it. All I know is it's a public holiday this Thursday."
1. I only know its a public holiday.
2. To unite the races, maybe?
3. I will be resting at home.
Chris Poi, 24, student, Kuala Lumpur:
"It's a day of togetherness for all races."
1. Yes, I'm aware it's this Sept 16.
2. When Sabah and Sarawak were formed under 1Malaysia.
3. I will chill out at home, spend some quality time with family and friends.
Desmond Wong, 34, IT specialist, Kuala Lumpur:
"It's like celebrating Merdeka Day on Aug 31."
1. 1Malaysia Day.
2. This was when Sabah and Sarawak were accepted under one Malaysia.
3. I'll chill out with friends.
Mohd Izad, 22, student, Kuala Lumpur:
"It's to remind the public of 1Malaysia?"
1. Malaysia Day is this week.
2. This is when Sabah and Sarawak were merged.
3. I'll be staying at home.
Phoon Sew King
Phoon Sew King, 59, supervisor, Kuala Lumpur:
"I only knew from my friends recently about the public holiday. My boss hasn't informed me why."
1. Only know it's a public holiday on Sept 16.
2. Doesn't really know reason for the celebration.
3. Most likely relax at home.
Mala Meyer, 44, product advisor, Kuala Lumpur:
"My boss told me it's a public holiday. I don't really know more about it."
1. Sept 16.
2. I don't really know the reason for it, I was just told by my boss it's a public holiday.
3. I'd probably spend some time at home.
