REACTION TO MAHATHIR'S REMARKS

In Singapore, we don't kowtow

I READ with concern Tuesday's report, 'Malaysian Malays might kowtow to others if...', in which former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad claims that even though Malay Singaporeans enjoy the benefits of a more developed country, they have to 'terbongkok-bongkok' (kowtow) to others.
Tun Dr Mahathir could have been more sensitive towards the feelings of Singapore Malays.
As a Malay Singaporean living and working peacefully with fellow Singaporeans of all races, I cannot agree with what he said.
Singapore's leaders worked hard for many years to achieve racial harmony, tolerance and understanding among Singaporeans. Today, we live and work together as one family; and we have reaped the rewards of being one of the safest and most developed nations in the world.
While Dr Mahathir's opinion on Malay Singaporeans enjoying the benefits of a developed country is spot-on, we have never kowtowed to others. Singaporeans of all races, including Malays, engage in healthy debate and discussions with our Government. The decisions made by the Government, after hearing feedback from its people, are respected as we trust it is in the best interests of all Singaporeans.
Through community support and hard work, Malay students in Singapore have bettered their results in various national examinations. Such achievements are celebrated by all Singaporeans.
With better education, Malay Singaporeans have achieved a better lifestyle for their families compared with a large percentage of Malays in Malaysia. We worked hard to be where we are today and in no way kowtow to anyone to gain success. Meritocracy remains the benchmark of our society. While this works in Singapore, it may not work in Malaysia.
Having many relatives, friends and business associates of all races in Malaysia requires me to travel frequently across the Causeway. Over the years, I have seen and learnt that for the minority to succeed in Malaysia, they need to kowtow to others.
The irony is that many ordinary Malaysian Malays who have no connections, or fail to share their potential success with the 'right' people, will never have it easy to succeed. Perhaps, favouritism, cronyism and bribery are problems Dr Mahathir may want to address in his country.
As for me, a Malay Singaporean, I would like to say thank you to my Singapore leaders. You have made Singapore the best place to live peacefully in for me and my family.
Mustaffa Othman

'Like others, Malay Singaporeans work hard for the benefits in a meritocratic system.'
MR AHMAD ABU BAKAR: 'I strongly object to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's remarks. Like others, Malay Singaporeans work hard for the benefits in a meritocratic system. They are not born with a crutch of ethnic rights, quotas and 'unfair' opportunities. When Singapore Malays graduate from universities as doctors, engineers and scientists, they can hold their heads as high as the others, because they have done so by their own hard work and merit.'
'The Malays in Singapore stand shoulder to shoulder with other Singaporeans.'
MR NIAZ MOHAMED: 'The prosperity of Singapore is proof enough of its internal stability achieved through excellent inter-racial and inter-religious harmony. A non-Muslim can visit any mosque in Singapore where he will not only be welcomed with hospitality, but also given a guided tour. Similarly, any person may visit any house of worship if he is modestly attired and receive the same hospitality. The Malays in Singapore have made great strides in all areas and stand shoulder to shoulder with other Singaporeans.'
'Singaporeans of all ethnic backgrounds have come a long way since 1965.'
MR JEFFREY LAW: 'Most people will dismiss Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's remarks as merely political rhetoric. Singaporeans of all ethnic backgrounds have come a long way since 1965, having embraced the system of meritocracy in all aspects: education, employment and social standing. Most important, our ability to be a developed country within such a short time is due to the concerted effort and sacrifices of all Singaporeans - Chinese, Malays, Indians and others.'

I am a Malay Singaporean who is very proud of being a Singaporean. I am very lucky that my father moved from Malacca Alor Gajah and give us a better life here in Singapore. I did not get the chance to said how grateful was. That was the best my father has done for us. I have 3 children now and I always reminded them they are lucky to be a Singaporean. Eventhough we are the minority but I am so grateful with our leaders to make this place safe, fair, beautiful, convenient for every family in Singapore. I am grateful that our education system is fair and one of the best in the world. Our University which was also attended by some Malaysia leader is recognized and is one of the top ten university in the world.
I have worked in Malaysia for 3 years and I am sad to say that the crime is terrible, the education system is of low quality. I have read in the paper about this Chinese girl who wcored 10 A1"s but there wasnt any place for her. Its very sad to see happened in Dr. Mahathir's period as a PM. I think he is only focussed with mega projects like Petronas Tower, crooked Bridge and others. He should focussed more on his country rather than interfering with other countries which he cannot matched. Our past and present PM has done a very good job in ensuring all the importance for it's public and I am thankful for that.
Being a Malay, I know that I have to work hard and also contribute to the success of my country and I have never felt being looked down by my other colleagues who are non malay. I feel comfortable with them and they also understand us as Malay so well.
My children can go out and enjoy life like a normal growing up kids without being feared and as parent without feeling worried about their safety. I feel that before anyone comments about Singapore Malays, they have to see if they have done enough for their people. The statemnt made by their leaders is very irresponsible because the Malays in Singapore are well educated, non emotional, not unreasonable and not reactive.
Thank you Singapore for making the Malays here feel wanted and for giving us an opportunity to excel by own merits and not because of race, language or religion. we have shown many big countries like our neighbors that eventhough we are a tiny red dot, we are now known as one of the developing countries in the world. we do not have to wait for wawasan 2020. only god knows if that wawasan can be achieved because whenever i travel to Malaysia, I still see drug addicts at the back lane, snatch theft, robbery happening beside the police station and many many more.
I like to thank my father and the Govt for making my life here in Singapore a pleasant one. You have looked after the public just like a father looking after it's children.

I am Malay Singaporean and I am very proud of being a Malay here. The best thing my late father have done for my family is to moved from malacca to Singapore. I am so grateful of what he has done.
I have never feel small being a Malay here. I would like to thanks the past PM and the other ministers for making this place top in Education, top in safety and security, top in everything and that is what we learnt. We do not have to wait for wawasan 2020 to be declared as developing country because regardless of race, language and religion, we have a part in Singapore success. If the Malysian Malays still sleeping and dreaming, one day you will KOWTOW to the other race because the Malays in Malaysia are just plain lazy. Please wake up if you want to achieve wawasan 2020. Ask what you can do for the country and not otherwise. To Dr. mahathir please dont stir the muddy water and we are not like the Malays in Malaysia who are emotionals and loves to demonstrate. You have not achieved what our past and present PM have done for Singapore and its people. look after your country before commenting on others. The Malays here are not that stupid like what you think. we are reasnable and rationale people.
Thank you

i think this rahman fella is a lunatic. if i were him, there was no such thing as grateful living in a pigeon hole. malay in singapore hv been brainwashed to believe that the sing gov is fair n transparent where as its not. just click sing gov portal n we can see how many malays are in top post, diff than msia. consider this, ur tiny red dot is beginning to shrink by overpopulation. n as any nation in the world in history, they will invade neighbouring country for land. i hope this rahman fella can renounce his malayness n deal with cremation/kubur bertingkat in singhell. n as 4 u joshua bitch, stop ur singov propa. we, the malays of malaysia feel pitiful for our brothers across the causeway. non emotional? well educated malay? what bs. i would rather live in a 10 acre land in kampong than a pigeon hole listening to lee kuan shit preach everyday.

thanks but no thanks joshua asshole.
