When a heart attack strikes
IN every way, Doug looked fit and healthy. With a few business ventures to manage, he barely had time for exercise but made up for that by helping his workers move potted plants in his nursery.
He had the occasional pains, aches and headaches but he was 53 after all, and thought they were all part of aging.
Then one day, while rushing to his nursery he felt a pain seizing his chest. Before long, the pain overwhelmed him and he began to lose consciousness. Gripping his chest, he steered the car to the road shoulder, nearly crashing into a row of fruit stalls. The traders rushed over and saw Doug slumped back in his seat – dead from a heart attack.
Doug’s story, a real one, is one of the many that happen everyday worldwide.
Deadly heart attacks strike swiftly, leaving the victim no chance of settling unfinished business or even saying goodbye to loved ones. Spare yourself the possibility of this; take care of your heart.
Caring for your heart
When caring for your heart, there are basically three essential things to monitor:
• Blood pressure
• Cholesterol
• Heart Energy
Check your blood pressure through KOP
Blood pressure (commonly known as a “silent killer” as it is symptomless) is a clear indicator of your heart condition. High blood pressure stresses the heart, as it will have to work harder. If left uncontrolled, this will lead to a stroke and eventually a heart attack.
In October 2008, the Malaysian Society of Hypertension reported that some 43% of Malaysians over 30 have high blood pressure. Alarmingly, they were not even aware of their perilous condition.
It is therefore important to monitor your blood pressure. If your pressure is on the high side, it must be brought down to normal through diet and exercise and sometimes, prescribed medication.
Another very helpful way of regulating blood pressure is through supplements. Recently, a Japanese researcher, Prof Dr Masaaki Yoshikawa, discovered a unique protein from the Bonito Fish Powder that could normalise blood pressure.
Studies later confirmed that the protein, known as Katsuobushi Oligopeptide (KOP), is effective in regulating blood pressure. Through a special patented process, the Bonito Fish Powder is now available in capsule form. It is advised to take 750mg daily.
Keep cholesterol level down
There are three parts to the cholesterol test – triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). For good cholesterol levels, the HDL level should be high while the other two should be low.
High LDL and TG levels increase the risk of the arteries becoming blocked which may cause a stroke or heart attack.
It is highly advisable to have a diet rich in Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) and Omega-3 to keep your cholesterol level in check. Unfortunately, our diet is often short of these two critical ingredients, so the best thing to do is to take supplements containing them.
Stop inflammation and strengthen your heart
More and more research has shown that inflammation is a major cause of heart problems as it initiates the formation of plaque that blocks arteries which supply oxygenated blood to the heart.
To effectively stop inflammation, look out for a product that contains both Omega-3 and Omega-6. Even better is a combination of Omega-3 and 6 plus Coenzyme Q10 as Coenzyme Q10 supplies energy to the heart.
For consumers’ convenience, more and more companies are launching supplements that combine these three heart essentials into one product.
Don’t be a statistic
Your heart works hard to keep you alive. More importantly, it enables you to enjoy life to the fullest, but only if you take good care of it.
Otherwise, you may end up like Doug who had worked so hard and was just beginning to enjoy the fruits of his labour.
